kalikshama -> RE: Petition: Clear Channel: Discontinue Rush Limbaugh's radio talk show. (3/9/2012 5:52:55 AM)

I continue to be surprised at how quickly DaddySatyr clicks the Hide button for female posters who disagree with him, while being quite willing to engage with male posters.

--------

My admittedly dim recollection of Armed Forces Radio in Okinawa in the late 80s was that it was mostly music that in an attempt to please everyone, they pleased no one, and we mostly listened to tapes and cassettes.

As a woman in the almost exclusively male field of munitions, I had enough difficulty without Limbaugh reinforcing "negative military stereotypes about women."

Does Rush Limbaugh belong on armed forces radio? Criticism mounts.

The Armed Forces Network broadcasts the 'Rush Limbaugh Show.' But Limbaugh's 'slut' comment only reinforces negative military stereotypes about women, leading some veterans to start a petition against the show.

...as the furor over Mr. Limbaugh’s description of a Georgetown University student as a “slut” reaches troops overseas, US military veterans as well as soldiers serving in Afghanistan are asking the Pentagon to drop Limbaugh’s radio program from its lineup.

An organization of some 100,000 US military veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, VoteVets.org, is also circulating a petition calling for the removal of Limbaugh’s show from the US military’s network, and signatures on it are growing everyday, says Maj. Jon Soltz, the chairman of VoteVets.org.

There are currently more than 11,000 military veterans and family members who have signed the petition.

In denigrating the student, who testified on Capitol Hill in favor of health-care coverage of birth control, Limbaugh “is commenting not on an individual, but on all women,” says Major Soltz, who returned from his second tour of duty in Iraq in December. “The government shouldn’t be promoting the type of content that essentially disrespects all women in the military who use contraception.”

...“I totally believe in people’s freedom of speech,” explains veteran tech Sgt. Jennifer Norris, who served in the Maine Air National Guard from 1996 to 2008. “But when it comes to calling someone you don’t even know a slut, it feeds into the misogynistic attitude towards women – and it hurts our cause.”

This is particularly the case as the US military grapples with rising rates of sexual assault in its ranks, Ms. Norris and others add. In some units, “As a woman, you were either a slut, a bitch, or a dyke. Rush’s mentality feeds right into that, when we’re trying to work so hard to get rid of that.”

Bill Maher Defends Rush Limbaugh

Mar 7, 2012 at 12:15 pm

Last night on Twitter, Bill Maher defended Rush Limbaugh and attacked liberals for not accepting Limbaugh’s apology after he spent three days relentlessly attacking law student Sandra Fluke.

Notably, Limbaugh only apologized for “two words,” after attacking Fluke dozens of times. Among those liberals not satisifed with Limbaugh’s apology was Fluke herself, who said it didn’t “change anything.” Dozens of Limbaugh’s advertisers agreed and have announced they are pulling their ads after Limbaugh’s apology.

Here is Maher’s tweet: "Hate to defend #RushLimbaugh but he apologized, liberals looking bad not accepting. Also hate intimidation by sponsor pullout"

go back a page. He said he was hiding edwyn and I am pretty sure he is male.

As to the AFR...if they want to listen to "that lousy entertainer with the ethics of a pig" then that is their right. I have a really hard time with telling a soldier you are old enough to go out and die for our country but too stupid to be allowed to pick who you want listen to on the radio.

"What About The Democrats' Rush Limbaughs?"

We're hearing a lot from conservatives about how Rush Limbaugh's attack on Sandra Fluke, offensive though it may be, occasions a second look at all the offensive things liberals get away with saying. "Liberals" is defined pretty broadly in this instance to include rappers (I guess because they're usually black). More plausibly, it includes Matt Taibbi calling Andrew Breitbart a "douche" in his obit, Keith Olbermann calling Michele Malkin a "mashed-up bag of meat with lipstick on it," Bill Maher calling Sarah Palin a "cunt" and a "dumb twat," and some guy I've never even heard of called Ed Schultz calling Laura Ingraham a "slut." How is that any different?

It's different in two ways.

First, all of the people who were subjected to verbal abuse by the liberal- or left-leaning blowhards and smart-asses mentioned above are public figures. If you follow politics you know who they are. Fluke, on the other hand, though a political activist, was not really a public figure. If you follow politics you probably didn't know who she was until Limbaugh attacked her.

Second, and more important, none of the rappers and liberals and leftists mentioned above is so feared by President Obama or any other Democrat that said Democrat would hesitate to criticize him if the occasion warranted it. That isn't necessarily because Democrats are braver people. It's because there is no rapper or liberal or leftist commentator or talk-radio host or comedian who commands anything equivalent to the knuckle-dragging army of haters that Limbaugh leads on the right.

We're talking about a guy who seriously considered himself a plausible successor to William F. Buckley. That was admittedly somewhat delusional, but Limbaugh was right to consider himself a serious political force in America, and that says a lot about what's wrong with the Republican party. Mitt Romney tread so carefully in saying Limbaugh's was "not the language I would have used"--well, okay, that was cowardly--because Limbaugh exercises outsized influence over primary voters. (The only major Republican leader who's properly condemned Limbaugh's remarks is John McCain.) Democrats have their Sister Souljahs, but they don't let them run the party. Republicans do. That's why we all heard about Limbaugh's rude comments about Fluke right away but didn't hear about these other comments until conservative commentators started Googling.

If Limbaugh were willing to settle for a level of trash-talk influence on par with Taibbi, Olbermann, et. al, he'd have much greater leeway to call Fluke a prostitute and a slut. I look forward to the day that happens.

Update, 6:15 p.m.: Nick Gillespie of Reason seems to have gotten it into his head that I think it's fine for Taibbi, Olbermann, Maher, and Schultz to have said the vile things mentioned above. I'm afraid he misses my point. It very clearly is not fine for them to have said these things. It's deplorable. (If I wanted to protect them I wouldn't have repeated verbatim the offensive things they said.) So lets be clear: Shame on the lot of them!

But people say deplorable things all the time. Right now, as I'm typing this, some liberal somewhere is saying something unforgivable about Michelle Bachmann or Ann Coulter. I condemn you, whoever you are! But I'm not going to conduct a house-to-house search to find you.

The unacceptably vile things that Taibbi, Olbermann, Mahar, and Schultz said may imperil their immortal souls but they don't warrant as much attention from the rest of us as the unacceptably vile things Limbaugh said. That's because Taibbi, Olbermann, Maher, and Schultz have less influence. When Limbaugh tells conservatives what to think a lot of them obey and a lot of politicians take care to steer clear of contradicting him. When Taibbi, Olbermann, Mahar, and Schultz tell liberals what to think few of us even hear what it is they're saying and no politician pays them any mind. (Sorry, fellas, but it's true.) It matters more to society what a person with a big following says than what a person with a small following says. I would have thought this point was obvious, but apparently it isn't.

Maher ever apologize to Palin? And that's not the worst thing he's said concerning Palin.

Nope.

Maher Ups The Ante on Palin attacks

ORIGINAL: From the linked article

In a recent "Real Time" installment after the riots began in Egypt, the host said that for lasting political change to occur in this region, there's going to have to be a sexual revolution that improves the treatment of women.

But apparently to Maher, such equality doesn't begin at home, for he has in the past eleven days called Palin a t--t, a bimbo along with Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), and now the dreaded C-word which to women is like the N-word to African-Americans.

Once again, I point my finger at the National Organization for Women.

By not specifically admonishing Maher, "Real Time," and HBO in its weak defense of Palin last week, this hypocritically self-described women's organization was implicitly telling this so-called comedian and the network he represents it's just fine to make sexist attacks on this woman - and conceivably all conservative women - no matter how vulgar.

Welcome to the new and NOW-approved feminism, America - where liberal women's rights are to be defended while conservative women's rights are to be trampled on like a restaurant door mat.

MusicalBoredom -> RE: Petition: Clear Channel: Discontinue Rush Limbaugh's radio talk show. (3/9/2012 6:31:07 AM)

I'm not a fan of Maher and I don't personally know anyone who alters their ideals based on what he says. I do know people that take anything that Rush says as fact. But all of that aside, what does what Mayer say or apologize for have to do with what Rush says and apologize for? I think the "well they did it too" excuse should end at around age 10.

Amazing. That is how one pounds a square peg into a round hole. That's how you do it. Pure Alinsky. It's not about Palin or Bachman as women, but political figures. That's the pass, and available only to the left.

The right has yet to figure out how to fight fire with fire. How to use Alinsky against Alinsky.

Lucylastic -> RE: Petition: Clear Channel: Discontinue Rush Limbaugh's radio talk show. (3/9/2012 6:56:31 AM)

Its already been pointed out that he called her a cunt...what is your point? would you like us to go back and find how many derogatory remarks rush has aimed at women??
What about Hannity, what about O Reilly, what about all the ugliness the breitbart made about Shirley Sherrod? What about and Coulter and Malkin.
Complain and bitch all you want, there was a huge topic about it when it happened. and how about dealing with the present REASONS for people being upset.

Maher said it once, Rush went after her for three to four days. depending on what you consider to be his rant.He did a LOT more to degrade that woman and ALL women (except those who agree with him as they are the really ignorant ones who believe what he "said" rather than find out the actual transcript)
Much more than 99% of the dominants into degredation out there are able to do to a non consenting adult.

Why shouldnt college women have sex? hell ANY bloody consenting woman?? this is 2012, not 1950. She wants women to be safe, using condoms WITH the birth control is NOT unusual for any un married women I know, and indeed go to any other page on this forum and ask what you should do to protect against STDS, if you are on the pill .....wait and you will rightfully get jumped all over for thinking the pill will do anything to protect against the nasties.
Being safe is responsible.......wether you are a woman or a man, having sex once a week or a hundred times a week it makes no odds.
WHO are you to say how many times they can have sex, or use condoms, or even viagra, you cant prescribe the same pill to every woman, to suggest other wise is deadly and stupid.
Taking choices away for women to be safe to the point of being able to decide on choosing what pill they can have or put a limit on their sexual partners or number of encounters is a slippery path.
Assuming what fluke said about insurance is the red herring, try reading and inwardly digest the ACTUAL transcript, not what you have "heard"

PS Kali, self control needs a helping hand sometimes:)

Haha, another sucker for the Alinsky meme.

Bill Maher: 'Who the F*** Is Saul Alinsky?'

With conservatives increasingly comparing the strategy of President Obama to the playbook of Saul Alinsky, Bill Maher has two angry responses: "One, why would you invite my outrage by suggesting such a specious link? ... And two, who the fuck is Saul Alinsky?" In a clip picked up by Mediaite, Maher notes that the Alinsky meme is going mainstream, with Newt Gingrich recently ranting that the current election represents "American exceptionalism versus the radicalism of Saul Alinksy." Deadpans Maher, "if Newt hates him, he's probably a divorce lawyer."

So Maher Wikipedia-ed "Alinsky" and found the problem: "He liked black people," said Maher. "Alinsky also fought slum lords and taught poor people to band together to improve their lives—or what Mitt Romney calls 'a divider.'"

The bigger point is how Republicans create fictional opponents completely divorced from reality, like "Barack X," "an Islamo-socialist revolutionary who's coming for your guns..." Maher contends that while liberals were perhaps shrewish in their hatred of George Bush, they hated him for things he actually did, like the economy, Iraq War, and torture: "That was the real guy."
