Proving once again that the Democrats would rather campaign and demonize the opposition than govern in any sort of effective manner, the Senate is getting ready to turn the Violence Against Women act into the next talking point in their crafted narrative. The law has been around since 1994, and would walk right through a reauthorization, allowing them time to discuss, oh, I don't know, a budget maybe, but that would make entirely too much sense. Accusations fly in Senate over Violence Against Women Act The headlines just write themselves, don't they? Coming soon to the fundraising emails in your inbox, and a dozen threads near you. Because God forbid this election should involve talking about issues not created by the DNC focus groups...

So what exactly is wrong with increasing availibility of battered woman programs in rural and Native American communities? Or maybe your problem is in including same sex couples in the law? Or is your issue that you think undocumented women should be beaten without recourse?

Reauthorization is currently being debated in the Senate. Both parties have submitted their own updated version of the bill, one by Sen. Patrick Leahy _D-VT), the other by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA). With both versions of the bill, the Senate judiciary committee voted along partisan lines for their party's version of the bill. Two bills. Got a link to those? Hard to know what is being said as lip service and what is the truth without actually seeing them.

What's wrong with it, Ken, is that the Senate would rather tinker with an 18 year old law, so they can have election year press conferences about that, and sling slurs about how some people must be in favor of violence against women, than get on with some actual work.

poor Rich.cant handle what other people find important to discuss. How about this ??which I reported in another thread https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/2011/related/proposals/sb507 The first part of the bill...states An Act to amend 48.982 (2) (g) 2., 48.982 (2) (g) 4. and 48.982 (2) (gm) of the statutes; relating to: requiring the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board to emphasize nonmarital parenthood as a contributing factor to child abuse and neglect. Wisconsin State Senator Don Pridemore has signed onto fellow State Senator Glenn Grothman’s bill that blames unmarried parents as contributing to child abuse and neglect. However, Pridemore has taken the matter of abuse a step further by commenting on domestic abuse. Is there a connection between domestic abuse of partners and child abuse? Sure there is, but that isn’t the line Pridemore is drawing. Like Grothman, Pridemore sees marriage as some type of cure-all to troubled relationships. In an interview with TMJ4 in Milwaukee, Pridemore explained that a spouse whaling on another spouse, and the spouse victimized by those beatings, just need to rekindle their love and all will be fine. “If they can refind those reasons and get back to why they got married in the first place it might help,” said Pridemore. It seemed that Grothman had a simplistic solution to child abuse by believing that marriage fixes troubled relationships. Pridemore’s views are worse than simplistic. They are dangerous for the victimized spouse. Grothman and Pridemore’s views also point out to the circular and irrational argument that they are making. Grothman takes the argument that child abuse will decrease in a married relationship. Child abuse often goes hand in hand with other forms of domestic abuse. However, Pridemore admits that domestic abuse occurs in married relationships but the solution to that is to stay together. Problems in a relationship? Well, then get married. Still problems in a relationship? Stay married. These guys are quite the problem solvers. Your avoidance of said topics is louder than spouting condescension tho.. So much for the idea that marriage is the cure for troubled relationships. Both men miss the point that the quality of relationships is the problem. They also miss the point that the marriage solution that they back is not even a Band-aid. It may even worsen an abusive situation. Take off the blinders and stop being so damn condescending.

Come on. You have to get your priorities straight. What's more important...taking care of the financial mess we are in or demonizing 1/2 the country? After all, there are elections coming up.

Im not sure that is true, Rich. In relation to american tribes, a man, who is not a native american but lives on a reservation, can commit the crime of rape or domestic violence and not be held accountable. http://www.nativelegalupdate.com/2012/02/articles/federal-prosecutions-still-weak-for-crimes-on-reservations/ This does sound like a valid issue.

In the article it quotes: Many Republicans were furious at that suggestion and accused Democrats of election-year politics by trying to paint Republicans as anti-women. Funny - I thought the R's were doing a pretty good job of painting that canvas themselves.

Is Uganda more important than the crimes against women? Is a budget, by your own agreement, that has not been passed in years, more important than women being beaten, raped, killed and their attackers getting away because the federal government refuses to prosecute and the tribes have no jurisdiction?

Crimes against women have no importance to Republicans or Conservatives, it has been made very clear. 100 Troops are in Uganda. Not like the number that BUSH sent to Afghanistan and Iraq, and as we all know, Iraq was based on lies and half truths, not that the right will admit to it. In case no one on the right has noticed, this entire campaign on the right has been about RESTRICTING the rights of women. Women who use birth control, according to the rightist talking heads are sluts and whores. That must mean that women who are raped were asking for it, women who were beat were asking for it.

I understand Rich's point.. and his is valid. However, I dont understand the desire to simply dismiss this issue because of the belief... Im not even sure why.. because its not a national issue? Yet arent the hands of the tribes, which is merely one point being raised on the floor, and there are others just as important, a result of the lack of attention of the federal government who is supposed to be protecting these women and prosecuting these men? Or is it, heaven forbid and I am not saying this is at all Rich's opinion... but is the point on the floor that these are not "american female citizens" so they dont count as much?

Yes, Tazzy, when you factor in that we already have the Violence Against Women act, and have had for it damn near 20 years. You're fucking A right that an illegal military deployment to a whole new theater, and a budget for the country are more important than treaty loopholes, when a "sovereign" body doesn't address every incident.

[;)] Yes, Congress is a pit of politics, no matter who is charge, but the Chair of the House Armed Services committee gave a speech last week, saying that unless we fix the issues created by sequestration, we are going to have pre-WWII troop levels, and a Navy smaller than what we had before WWI, in a few short years, and the top Google hit for that story is a local newspaper.

So, in your opinion, no law should ever be improved? Even though this very law has been improved each of the previous times it was reauthorized?
