if you have a Ballys near you they will do it for $20 (The website says 40 but the one near me has a sign that says they will do you and a friend for $40) http://www.ballyfitness.com/clubs/personal_training/bodygem/
Most nutrition centers around here and other smaller fitness centers have it too.
You can purchase one yourself, they run around $2000 + the cost of those little plastic mouthpiece things.
I suppose if you really wanted, you can buy one and charge others for using it.

http://www.healthetech.com/consumer_bodygem.html

I am sure if you looked around you can find one cheaper or places that will test it for you cheaper.
Your doctor may have one too. I know that when treating eating disorders like anorexia they sometimes use these.

Have you heard of the NO-CARB Diet for 2004?

NO C-heney
NO A-shcroft
NO R-umsfeld
NO B-ush
and "Absolutely NO RICE!"

This is a diet that will take you successfully through the next election.

marsman -> RE: Atkins diet (5/1/2004 11:44:24 AM)

Dr. Batmanghelidj M.D. wrote a book about drinking water called "Your Body's Many Cries for Water"

http://www.watercure.com/Topics1.htm

He recommends 2 quarts of water per day with a pinch of salt. And by water he does not mean coffee, tea, soda or juice.
Just plain water.

The first good thing I noticed is that I no longer get "acid stomach."

I took too much water once. The main symptom was vomitting after eating, with no acid taste in the vomit at all.
The extra water completely neutralized my stomach acid.
I cured myself quickly by cutting back on water.

I didn't give up and now still drink at least 2 quarts a day.

People with kidney problems should consult a physician about water intake though.

sub4hire -> RE: Atkins diet (5/8/2004 7:27:12 AM)

When at the gym I drink much more than 2 quarts a day. It still leaves me feeling thirsty. Water is the only thing that quenches my thirst. So, I drink more water. There are times when I drink and drink until I get an upset stomach and still feel thirsty. Other times I'm fine.
Someone said drink gatorade. Well gatorade leaves me craving water. Gatorade has sugar in it. Anything with sugar makes me crave water to get the taste out of my mouth.

See, I'm doomed. I like gatorade just not when I'm thirsty.
Do you have any idea why the pinch of salt? I only ask because its pretty well known that we all get too much salt on a daily basis in processed foods. Why add more?

marsman -> RE: Atkins diet (5/9/2004 2:16:06 PM)

Dr. Batmanghelidj 's theory is that most people need more water and not less salt. He sees a natural balance between salt and water in the human body. The first sign of too little salt is cramping. In myself I notice cramping in my back at night when I take too little salt.

For thirst Dr B. recommends water and only water. Drinking anything else such as gatorade, coffee, tea, juice, etc. will use up water in order to be digested by the body.

(not replying to anyone in particular)

Just saw the documentary "Supersize Me." All i can say is that i NEVER want to eat fast food again!

Good thing so many things on the McDonald's menu is loaded with Carbs, bad fats, and way much sugar: not really part of the Atkins plan now is it?

BTW- this was a great documentary, however, i would not recommend eating anything at all while watching this: your stomach may turn.

However, if one has a vomit fetish, there's a memorable scene for ya within the first 30 or so minutes.

Thanks rain, my goal is 160, I'm 5'7, large boned and pretty muscular. South Beach is a lifetime way of eating, not a "diet".

Estring -> RE: Atkins diet (5/24/2004 5:13:46 PM)

In the LA Times health section today, there is an article about low carb diets being more effective than low fat diets. They also say that there doesn't seem to be any bad effects either. I need to read the whole article, but just thought I'd throw some fat into the fire. [;)]

Sinergy -> RE: Atkins diet (5/24/2004 7:00:23 PM)

Lick Bush in 2004.

I have an extremely physically demanding job, well, two actually. I cut out most carbs from my diet several years ago. I dont do ketosis testing and eat primarily protein 4-6 times a day. On the other hand I love red wine (not at work) and drink coffee and diet coke, largely because one of my jobs has variable shifts and I no longer have a sleep schedule.

When I started doing this, I never noticed much weight loss. I am 6'1, medium build, and was 204 pounds, now I am still 6'1 (surprise) and weigh 198. On the other hand, my waist size has gone down about 5 inches from where it was. My neck and shoulder muscles (You put a helmet on and get repeatedly kicked in the head and tell me if you get neck and shoulder muscles...) have increased in size so I have gone from a 42L to a 46L coat size due to my shoulder muscle mass.

One thing I did discover is if I do not eat high carbohydrates the night before and the morning I teach my class, I can get through about 3 fights and I fall into a black abyss of exhaustion in a way I never did with plenty of carbs in my diet.

Atkins is nice, but those I know who have done it without increasing their activity level dont seem to get very far.

heard about a study a few month's ago I believe from Australia. It said you should drink one ounce of water a day for each pound you weigh. That's more water than any of us drink in a given day.

Hrm, 200 ounces of water sounds about what I drink in a day, although some of that is contained in my food.

What I heard is that if your urine is not clear when you go to bed at night, you are not drinking enough water.

When I wear my padded suit to get kicked in the head, I am probably sweating a quart an hour for 4 hours. And I drink over a gallon of water in that time and my not have to urinate for an hour or so after the class.

iwillserveu -> RE: Atkins diet (5/25/2004 12:06:58 PM)

proudsub,

Sorry to reply to someone else through you, but...

Muscle tissue weighs more that fat. If you work out, gaining weight but losing inches is OK.

iwillserveu -> RE: Atkins diet (5/25/2004 12:12:07 PM)

If you tell a fat guy to avoid fats and he sees no doctor he may end up doing something that lowers his cholesterol. If you tell a random fat gtuy that fats are irrelevant and losing weight is all about carbs, hello triple by-pass.:)

sub4hire -> RE: Atkins diet (5/25/2004 1:16:31 PM)

That's a lot of water. I don't totally count how much I drink in a given day. Two hundred ounces sure sounds like a lot though.

If anyone has the answer. I can drink water..lots of it. Remain thirsty. IF I drink gatorade when thirsty that only makes me more thirsty for water to get the sugary taste out of my mouth.
So, whats wrong with me? What am I deprived of when so thirsty?

On South Beach we eat lots of "good fats"--olive oil, canola oil, fat in nuts, avacados, and omega 3's, all of which help the cholestrol ratio and act as anti-oxidents. On Atkins they are allowed more saturated fats but it is not recommended they overindulge in them as the media often shows. If you were to post that statement on an Atkins diet board you would be blasted for it. I firmly believe good carb, good fat is the way to eat for a healthy life.

ShadeDiva -> RE: Atkins diet (5/25/2004 7:15:03 PM)

Heyyyyyy I'm doing good, I *actually* LOST weight!

10 pounds! It's a freaking miracle! LOL!

Now if I can only keep it goinggggggg .... steady does it!

And I've found some nifty ways to get my protein levels up without a ton of fat or carbs YAY!

I've LOVING Whey protein in a mighty big way (Mod 1 - PLEASE don't say that's a nono LOL - its a life saver for me right now LOL) and (I know I know, this is somewhat processed - but it's helping me at this point until I can adjust my eating habits and learn how to get this via nonprocessed FOOD) Nitro-TECH drinks, with a whopping 45 grams of protein and a tons of other minerals and vitamins which I KNOW i'm lacking cuz Im not eating quite right yet!

My little fitday graphie thingie is starting to look MUCH better. LOL.
