The Obama administration has in turn been secretive about its use of targeted drone strikes, boasted about the program's success, and fended off critics who say the strikes are killing and injuring too many civilians. A New York Times story published Tuesday has the administration's human rights critics buzzing again. A key revelation comes near the end of the article, written by Jo Becker and Scott Shane, under the heading, "'They Must All Be Militants.'"

Obama, Becker and Shane write, was angry when informed that the first drone strike after he took office had killed innocent Pakistanis. But one of the measures the administration embraced to prevent future innocent casualties was to embrace a method of counting combatants that would rope in more innocents.

"It in effect counts all military-age males in a strike zone as combatants, according to several administration officials, unless there is explicit intelligence posthumously proving them innocent," the Times reports. "Counterterrorism officials insist this approach is one of simple logic: people in an area of known terrorist activity, or found with a top Qaeda operative, are probably up to no good."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/29/drone-attacks-innocent-civilians_n_1554380.html

So apparently civilian casualties no longer matter to Obama's Ministry Of Peace. And our Hellfire missiles are so smart, they ask for ID from teenage males before blowing them to paradise.

Is this a prelude to Obama killed Trayvon Martin and not Zimmerman, or what?

And while we are warming to this subject, only armchair generals (so rife on the right) would believe any asswipe about 'surgical strikes'  or 'smart bombs'

They are surgical and smart only in the matter that they arent carpet bombs.

Please note, all non-vets and non-combatants, that more people die in wars by accident than on purpose, there is a reason that even back as far as Clauswitz (although it was probably said many years before him) that it is 'The Fog of War'.

It may not be accurate, but you can kill lotsa people with it.  Some few of whom you really intended to kill.

No, rob is against all incumbents, not partisan at all. He explained it to me.

People.

War. is. Dumb.

Throw all the hippie kumbaya peacenik lily-livered unrealistic unpatriotic weakling nonGorean twue-men bullshit at me you like. It's a prelude to negotiation, and at a high cost, enriching not the nation or the victors, but the manufacturers of equipment and supplies. Stop fighting them.

I'm against Obama's war, I was against Bush's war, I was against Reagan and Bush I's extra-curricular excursions. Dumb.

Let the flames begin. But they won't make war any smarter.

Osama bin Laden was fantastically successful. In a day, he got us ruining ourselves to the cost of trillions, ongoing into perpetuity, and rallying around the flag to do it. He made George Bush and benefited the oil industry immeasurably, insuring continued high demand and greater production.

So people die. All in the name of the economy, right?

War. is. Dumb.

Absolutely. The storming of magdeburg during the thirty years war clocked up a lot of collateral damage, didn't it?

Neither was Bush, but don't let the facts get in the way here.

BTW, you do know we have troops on the ground in Yemen, don't you?

How about Uganda?

How about Libya?

pwned? Forget how to use vowels? Aren't you English known for using too many vowels, like coloUr.

It wasn't the right whining about innocent Iraqi's six years ago, I can't help but point out the hypocrisy from the Obama lovers...

I love the deafening silence from the anti war Obama lovers, who are bending over backwards to defend the Hypocrite in Chief.

So what were the grounds given for the invasion of Iraq in the first place, if your chimp wasn't lying about that, then.
You can demonstrate that those WMDs were found, and that teh Kenyan's namesake was bankrolling OBL, can you?

No facts are getting in my way, only in yours.
Yes, I knew about all that.  You see, we have embassies, and we provide support to other countries on their war on terror, that was pushed thru congress by the Bush administration.

You might consider googling the DIA.

Yawn, those who are so blind...

quote:

Iraq's noncompliance with the conditions of the 1991 ceasefire agreement, including interference with U.N. weapons inspectors.
Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction, and programs to develop such weapons, posed a "threat to the national security of the United States and international peace and security in the Persian Gulf region."
Iraq's "brutal repression of its civilian population."
Iraq's "capability and willingness to use weapons of mass destruction against other nations and its own people".
Iraq's hostility towards the United States as demonstrated by the 1993 assassination attempt on former President George H. W. Bush and firing on coalition aircraft enforcing the no-fly zones following the 1991 Gulf War.
Members of al-Qaeda, an organization bearing responsibility for attacks on the United States, its citizens, and interests, including the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, are known to be in Iraq.
Iraq's "continu[ing] to aid and harbor other international terrorist organizations," including anti-United States terrorist organizations.
Iraq paid bounty to families of suicide bombers.
The efforts by the Congress and the President to fight terrorists, and those who aided or harbored them.
The authorization by the Constitution and the Congress for the President to fight anti-United States terrorism.
The governments in Turkey, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia feared Saddam and wanted him removed from power.
Citing the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998, the resolution reiterated that it should be the policy of the United States to remove the Saddam Hussein regime and promote a democratic replacement.

Isn't "aiding and harboring other international terrorist organizations," the reason for the invasion of Pakistan to kill bin Laden? Aren't we still attacking Pakistan and Yemen with drones?

Sorry, even with that overinflated Gorean ego of yours, you don't represent the progressive caucus on this site... You are just one of many.

There are very few wars, actual wars, without civilian deaths. This is a simple reality about war that we, as Americans, would be wise to actually internalize. This is why the decision to go to war to begin with ought to be treated with appropriate seriousness, before one finds one is doing things one starts to feel concerned about.

The whole notion that we call these wars, "Operations", as if they were simply practice manoeuvres somewhere is ridiculous.

We are at WAR. And have been in that part of the world for quite some time.

What do people think happens during a WAR?

The time to think about issues like civilian casualties is actually before one makes the decision to go to WAR.

It makes us look ridiculous as a nation to be behaving as if no one thought a WAR would actually cause civilian casualties in the land where it is being fought. I mean seriously.....

Bush's excuse for the invasion was that Hussein had WMDs.
He didn't.
It doesn't matter how much he changed his story over the next five years, the invasion was staged over a lie.
Enjoy your kool aid.
