It explains much that you get what you refer to as "actual facts" from such highly partisan websites

quote:

ORIGINAL: Musicmystery

Ah. So the actual facts aren't important to you, just the partisanship.

Well it's not my post, so wrong again, Sanny.

But since those *are* the actual facts in this case, I don't see what your problem is.

Sanity -> RE: Verizon To Lay Off 1,700 Workers After Paying CEO $22 Million Last Year (6/11/2012 9:18:16 AM)

Its all right, I cant imagine a leftist even considering the idea that there may be a more balanced source of information out there, or that thinkprogress would exaggerate or try to vilify a capitalist organization or entity

Its okay because I am here to lead you by the hand to some balance

Not that I expect it could ever make you think though, mostly just to mock you

actual facts is not that verizon paid the guy 22 million or they are laying off 1700?

what is the actual facts from your non-partisan sources (and who are they)?

Musicmystery -> RE: Verizon To Lay Off 1,700 Workers After Paying CEO $22 Million Last Year (6/11/2012 9:22:21 AM)

There, ya see? A new perspective.

Not entirely true...from your article:

"The company, with a total of about 192,000 employees, has been negotiating with its unions to lower costs for the past year. Verizon has warned that the latest move will result in 600 layoffs, according to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, which represents the employees."

“Layoffs are a tool of absolute last resort,” Rich Young, a spokesman for New York-based Verizon. “The reality is, the business has changed and we are adjusting our head count to meet those changes.”

But a balance to the OP. Kinda.

My point is as before--Verizon's strategy isn't working, and they don't have a Plan B, so they're cutting short term costs in lieu of implementing a long term strategy. Probably why their share price is weak.

mnottertail -> RE: Verizon To Lay Off 1,700 Workers After Paying CEO $22 Million Last Year (6/11/2012 9:26:03 AM)

It says exactly the same thing in the OP article, but in neither article does mention that it is generous, in fact you are making shit up as usual, since you don't know what the package consists of.

They essentially say exactly the same thing, with less detail, your article does not mention on the 'performance bonuses' in excess of $350 million dollars and the 18% increase  in profits, but alludes to those things in closing.

So, with your 'generour' you seem to be the only one without facts, so far.

In Benefits, Obama has been paid far more than 22million and he has caused the joblessness of tens of thousands. Oh thats right, its Bush's fault that the Democrats dreamed everyone should have a house and forced banks to give unsound loans that led to the housing bubble bust. The root cause of the downturn.

If you owned a business that was in trouble, and hired a new CEO to fix it, how many YEARS would it take you to figure out the new CEO DOESN'T know how to fix it? That all he knows how to do, is blame the old CEO.

Love to see the math on that.

How do you figure, for a recession that started in 2007, and reversed in early 2009?

...lets see....bush starts his term with a modest surplus....
and ends with the biggest recession since the great depression.....

darn near Obama's first legislation was bailing out bush's bank mess?

bush starts a tax cut deal that was supposed to create jobs and after 11 years STILL aint done shit for anybody but the wealthy?
( lets not mention that every bill that involved unemployment benefits got held hostage for tax cuts to the aforementioned wealthy)

Hmmmm... yup bush's fault.

Untill the bush tax cuts to the wealthy get dumped there will not be a recovery, or any that will resemble anything but a snails race.
If tax cuts to the wealthy gets replaced with TAX CREDITS for employing the poor and middle class then u'll see some improvement in the economy..... oh and I mean the USA's economy...meaning not outsourcing jobs elsewhere, and not walmart level wages.

....actually, its been done for people on welfare....businesses were given a tax credit for taking a person off the welfare rolls for about 2 years that was slighty or much more than what they were paying the employee. the employee had to have a job actually DOING something for the company, that would allow the person to become permanent, be usable as a reference for another job.

America’s largest wireless service provider plans to cut 1,700 jobs by offering its technicians and call center employees buyouts. Verizon Communications announced last week that it would reduce its nationwide workforce by 1 percent, and if enough workers don’t accept the buyouts, it will resort to involuntary layoffs.

Verizon paid chief executive Lowell C. McAdam more than $22.5 million in 2011, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of executive compensation. The company has paid its top five executives more than $350 million in the last five years, according to the Communications Workers of America, the union that deals most directly with Verizon:

[image]http://thinkprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/CWAVerizonChart.jpg[/image]

More than half of McAdam’s compensation package came from “Performance Awards,” according to the WSJ analysis. In 2011, the company’s shareholders saw an 18.8 percent increase in the value of their returns. Workers, however, have not shared in those gains. Verizon eliminated 26,000 jobs over a two-year period in 2008 and 2009 — including 16,000 jobs in 2009 alone — and laid off roughly 13,000 more in 2010.

At the same time, Verizon has demanded sizable concessions from workers in its negotiations with unions, asking for the elimination of the company’s pension plan, increases in health care premiums, and extra leeway to outsource jobs, according to a release from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Ya know, I used to think Tom Cruise wasn't worth 20 million bucks a picture (having had an interest in becoming an actor a thousand years ago) and then I realized....he actually put the time into making that happen (for him)...and I didn't.

A CEO (often) makes decisions for thousands of people (I'm one....but I make decisions for dozens), and none of those people (when we lose money) ever come to my office and say "Hey Boss....we just lost X....and 'd like to turn over my pay check because....I'm in...all the way".

That doesn't happen.

EVER.

So....if a CEO makes 50K or 4,500K a year....I support that guy or girl....because his or her head is on the chopping line.

Wanna bitch? Step up. Put everything you have on the line.

(And by the way....unless it's everything you own....shut the fuck up).

unless u actually have a profit sharing plan with said employees u shut ur own "The fuck up".
no sane person is going to invest in ur little smarmy company unless they intend to get something back other than the heady honor of working for a man who has little regard for his workers. And with ur attitude the ones who would work for u would only do so long enough to find out what an ass u are and ether rob u blind, make substandard products or both. And u would deserve it ....IMO.

And for that damn matter most of the CEOs that u love so much get paid no matter if the company does well or falls flat on its face as part of their "Golden Parachute" compesation package. For the second time in a week, go find out how Big coporations compensate their CEO's.

"smart phones" are made for dumb asses who are still 8yrs. old in mind, regardless of actual age.

Why anyone would want to admit to that, much less brag about it, is beyond me. But then, that's part and parcel to that situation, is it not?

Yes, you got me there on the "sour grapes" thing.

Busted.

I paid $9.99 for an ATT phone, and got (and still get) a $25 ninety-day card, which number of minutes I forget, because I never come close to using all of them. This amounts to $8.67 per month, and I did not even need my excellent 30 Yrs. old HP calculator to figure that out.

Maybe this is why I do not spend $300-$600 for the phone in the first place, then $60-$100 per month, just so I can do on the train or in the grocery store what I could be doing anyway at work or home in less than an hour (and much better and more accurately, not to mention more listenable).

If, on the high side of it, I needed a smart phone to keep up with things while I am on the trading floor, or if on the low side of it, if I needed a smart phone to tell be when my shoes are untied, with excellent help lines to tell me how to tie them again, I might find it worth the money.

But damn, here I am, using my own brain on occasion, even with that most excellent HP calculator or this pretty decent computer or land-line phone or other gadgets at hand, ...

So yes, "sour grapes" that I can't figure out how to spend more money, and use my brain less in the process.

Ahh, but that latter part. That's what sells the 'higher technology' in the first place, no?

PS

How was the Cocoa Puffs this morning? Good, huh?

Can you watch cartoons on a 'smart phone' too?

Raiikun -> RE: Verizon To Lay Off 1,700 Workers After Paying CEO $22 Million Last Year (6/11/2012 4:51:05 PM)

I dunno. I kinda like the fact that when traveling, I can be in a city I've never been before, verbally ask my phone where the nearest IHOP is, and get directions with GPS tracking how to get there. As well as playing Final Fantasy 7/Zelda/etc, plus everything Sanity mentioned.

I even use it to supply internet for my laptop pretty much anywhere.

Edwynn -> RE: Verizon To Lay Off 1,700 Workers After Paying CEO $22 Million Last Year (6/11/2012 5:09:17 PM)

If it's worth the money to you, I can understand it.

What I don't understand is someone being considered a Luddite or 'not able to keep up,' when the life situation and choice of information source, along with sensible consumer economics choice, does not bring them into a particular product market.

I'm sure there is information obtainable on the smart phone, somewhere, to explain all that.

Edwynn -> RE: Verizon To Lay Off 1,700 Workers After Paying CEO $22 Million Last Year (6/11/2012 5:28:21 PM)

PS

I forgot to add; for many travelers, I can see the advantage too, which seems to be the situation in your case.

It's just that I find it amusing that so many people purchase these phones as expression or projection of themselves that is only their own mirage, being part of the 'jet set,' as they take the six pack and Fritos through the check-out line.

As of Saturday night, the terms of the offer had not yet been released, so neither article (or Sanity) is in a position to discuss the generosity factor.

Like my thinkprogress article, Sanity's bloomberg article mentions CEO compensation:

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-06-04/verizon-offers-buyouts-to-1-700-union-land-line-employees.html

the union has criticized the company for increasing executive pay while contract talks are deadlocked.

“Verizon is putting big paydays for its top executives above building a world-class telecommunications infrastructure,” Myles Calvey, a Boston IBEW representative, said today in a statement.

Sanity -> RE: Verizon To Lay Off 1,700 Workers After Paying CEO $22 Million Last Year (6/11/2012 8:56:15 PM)

[:D] So... your extremely slanted thinkprogress write up is a hit piece on behalf of the union

Figures

There arent 1700 workers being let go at all, your headline is a lie

Theyre not layoffs, theyre buyouts

And if the offers arent generous enough the employees wont take them, will they

Deduction is your friend

Was that a copy/paste from the advert that talked you out of your $500?

Sure sounds like it.

The fact that you admit to it being a 'necessity' would be the giveaway there. Suckers always claim that it was a 'sure thing,' or a 'necessity.'

The previous poster cogently laid out what features he actually used, explaining their utility to him, whereas you just ran down a list of available features, another copy/paste.

Your posting history indicates that you would be less than capable of availing yourself of even half the features listed.

Even the previous poster did not claim it to be a 'necessity,' merely that he found it useful and worth the money, to him. My brother who has traveled for 25 years, as an auditor, declined the offer. Two different people, different choices. Neither of them doing copy/paste of an advert to explain it.

PS

You didn't even list a GPS in your long list of features. Boy, you got gypped. But I noticed that the cell cam and voice recording were first of what you listed. Just can't get enough of yourself, huh? Good thing you can record yourself for playback. Definitely a necessity there, no question.
