I think they're fleeing from the psychos...

But on topic: my experience has been that there are less than fully-mature and well-adjusted people everywhere, some even to the extent that could be called psychotic or sociopathic - but within the BDSM community a bit less than average. Within the online scene, it tends to creep back up - probably because the ease of entry is so low.

Then again, this is just my take on it after growing up around it and being involved and is just my opinion. YMMV.
