What is this need for extraterrestrial life? Are we lonely? Or are we disatisfied and feel limited by the Abrahamic religions? Have we finally outgrown the Bible?

For me personally, my faith in God and the bible is stronger because of my belief that there are no other sentient beings out there besides our own. I like to see us as the only group he created, that we are set apart for the reasons only he knows and simply does not have any other need for others. I don't see any conflict between abiogenesis and the belief that we alone were created by God.

If there is one of those magic sky wizards, you can better believe he has more than one antfarm.   He has alot of time to occupy.

Alright, for one thing we know from the bible is god does not like waste. Considering the size of the Universe, it would be an awful waste of space for us to be the only intelligent life in it.

Unless I am mistaken there is no edge of expansion... all matter is moving away from all other matter in all directions at an accelerating rate. This is very hard for me to grasp… where is the cut off in size for this expansion.

Butch

Well it does have to reflect back on us, imagine if every light particle just floated outside the universe to somewhere forever and ever.

It would be a Malthusian place indeed, and there would, at the speed of light, soon be no weight (actually mass though) to hold this bitch together, (moon: hit the ironicator) and thats about how that would work for us.

Galaxies are not one sided. We only gather the photons coming our way. Other photons emitted by distant galaxies must be heading out into the void, I would think, ahead of the outward rushing stars. So, beep, beep!

If they leave this universe, we are losing mass, that dont bode well for those who won't play dice.

Actually, under the theory of an expanding universe, the Universe has a shape and an edge, since the universe encompasses all of space time, as we know it.

Therefore, the Universe is finite, although constantly expanding.

Somehow, that makes sense.

Who is to say it is everlasting? Maybe it will go out with a whimper. As I understand it the amount of mass/energy that we can detect is insignificant. Less than 1.0% of the total. So, the loss may be just a tiny leak in the dike.

I say there is, in the vast number of galaxies, in the vast number of earth like places in those galaxies, there have to be a vast number of earthlike humans.  And there has to be a vast number of those tapeworms living in sulfuric acid near oceanfloor vents creatures and god knows what else.

What is known of physics seems to operate everywhere the same in our universe.

But the window of time and temperature during the Bang that was available to permit life supporting planets was very small, and so the odds are greatly reduced.

mnottertail -> RE: Life out there? (7/2/2012 12:05:17 PM)

You understand the physics, then?

Is that what Jehovah said to the Caananites? (sp?)

Well, I can see where your God becomes bigger in either event.

It ain't so. The knuckles in my fingers today are still the same distance, approximately, to other knuckles in the same finger as they were yesterday. Thus I conclude that I have busted a myth! Q.E.D. Me, Rule: I am a mythbuster!

mnottertail -> RE: Life out there? (7/2/2012 12:14:42 PM)

You busted a poorly worded sentence, no more.

Rule -> RE: Life out there? (7/2/2012 12:25:14 PM)

See? It is even worse: you are attracted to me. All of the Universe is not accelerating away from me, but towards me! Before long all of you will start to look bluish to me!

mnottertail -> RE: Life out there? (7/2/2012 12:27:49 PM)

you will look like a prepuce to me.

papassion -> RE: Life out there? (7/2/2012 12:30:45 PM)

for any lifeforms to visit us, they would have to know a way to go much faster than the speed of light. Or they would have to have lifespans in the millions of years. In our stage of science both are impossible. We don't know about their knowledge of science.
