A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

Shouldn't that one be in "Future History's Finest Quotes"?

And if we're having science fiction writers:
"I told you so. You damned fools."
-HG Wells
(His suggested epitaph from the introduction to the 1941 reprint of The War In The Air)

I was gonna c&P some of these, then decided, screw it, post the link to the page. They are all worthy, IMO!

Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny."

Great quote, thank you for reminded me about it !! I may just have to get Lao Tze on my re-reading list.

That book of his is crammed with great lines like that, though. Small wonder he begat a religion.

Another favorite of mine:

"I do not fear being dead. I was dead for millions of years before I was born and it didn't inconvenience me one bit."

- Mark Twain.

Once, as Mung went his way athwart the Earth and up and down its cities and across its plains, Mung came upon a man who was afraid when Mung said: "I am Mung!"
And Mung said: "Were the forty million years before thy coming intolerable to thee?"
And Mung said: "Not less tolerable to thee shall be the forty million years to come!"

"What? Men dodging this way for single bullets? What will you do when they open fire along the whole line? I am ashamed of you. They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist...."

John Sedgwicks' final words at the battle of Spotsylvania Court House upon learning of snipers in the area.

@DonGiovani

As much as I like that story, it's an urban legend. Yes, he did say something along those lines, and yes he did get shot by a sniper, but the timing wasn't quite the way the story has since been retold.

Regards,
Mike

I like the philosophy better than the religion.

In any case, Lao Tze will have to take back burner while I reread The Art of War.
It's been at least a quarter century since I have read it, which explains why, when I was looking for a quote to post on this thread, I couldn't find it !

I just love the Taoist mind set. The Book of Changes and The Book of Balance and Harmony are most excellent and highly recommended for anyone interested in Tao philosophy.
