Antsy McClain

I love good quotes and I have a long collection of them. Here is just a few of my favorites:

“It does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.”

- Thomas Jefferson

“The folly of mistaking a paradox for a discovery, a metaphor for a proof, a torrent of verbiage for a spring of capital truths, and oneself for an oracle, is inborn in us.”

- Paul Valery

Tolerably early in life I discovered that one of the unpardonable sins, in the eyes of most people, is for a man to go about unlabeled. The world regards such a person as the police do an un-muzzled dog.

- Thomas Huxley

"The less justified a man is in claiming excellence for his own self, the more ready he is to claim all excellence for his nation, his religion, his race or his holy cause."

- Eric Hoffer

“Modern Art is what happens when painters stop looking at girls and persuade themselves that they have a better idea.”

- John Ciardi

This is an excellent collection. Especially the last one.

"Patience is bitter, but it's fruit is sweet."

Rousseau

The problem, the main problem, with all of the new thin screen monitors with low energy usage and low profile, is not one of style nor of efficacy. I cannot fault them for color, clarity or resolution. Rather it is that the cat no longer has any place to sit but upon your keyboagggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg.

- Malcolm Nathaniel.

No horse gets anywhere until he is harnessed. No stream or gas drives anything until it is confined. No Niagara is ever turned into light and power until it is tunneled. No life ever grows great until it is focused, dedicated, disciplined.
- Harry Emerson Fosdick

He who loves much beats hard.
- Polish proverb

Stand before your god, bow before your king, and kneel before your man. Recipe for a happy life, that is"
- Terry Pratchett

Tie me to the bed and indulge my dark aesthetic, baby!

Easy? You men have no idea what we're dealing with down there.
Teeth placement, and jaw stress, and suction, and gag reflex,
and all the while bobbing up and down, moaning and trying to
breathe through our noses. Easy? Honey, they don't call it a job for nothin'!

Samantha-Sex in the City

Three more quotations that really speak to me....

"The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, & breeds reptiles of the mind."
-William Blake

"The happiness of man is: I will. The happiness of woman is: He wills. 'Behold, just now the world became perfect!' - thus thinks every woman when she obeys out of entire love. And woman must obey and find a depth for her surface. Surface is the disposition of woman: a mobile, stormy film over shallow water. Man's disposition, however, is deep: His river roars in subterranean caves: woman feels His strength but does not comprehend it." ~Nietzsche

"Here in your mind you have complete privacy. Here there's no difference between what is and what could be."
— Chuck Palahniuk

There are a bunch of Sherman quotes here: http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/w/william_tecumseh_sherman.html

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell.

Every attempt to make war easy and safe will result in humiliation and disaster.

(I had to snort when I read the next one!)

If I had my choice I would kill every reporter in the world, but I am sure we would be getting reports from Hell before breakfast.

LookieNoNookie -> RE: History's Greatest Quotes (7/11/2012 5:59:21 PM)

"There is only one success....to be able to spend your life in your own way" (Christopher Morley....whoever the hell he is)

"The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight, but no vision" (Helen Keller)

"The highest reward for a man's toil is not what he gets for it but, what he becomes" (John Ruskin)

"Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were, but without it, we go nowhere" (Carl Sagan)

"Fuck that bitch" (Me, talking to my lawyer about 18 years ago)

Interviewer: Why do you keep writing strong women?
Joss Whedon: Because you keep asking that question
