I don't think anyone faults Zimmerman for watching out for his neighborhood and calling in a report to the police, even though his grounds for suspecting Martin of anything are somewhat questionable. From that point on, however, Zimmerman made error after error and mistake after mistake, ending in the death of a 17 year old boy who was guilty of nothing except walking home from the store. And since that time Zimmerman has been less than factual in his accounts and less than honest in his dealings with the courts.

Error after error? You exaggerate. Easy to make errors when your back is on the ground, your nose has been smashed and your head is being pounded against the sidewalk. Put yourself in that spot at that time.

He'd already made a lot of errors or he wouldn't have found himself in that position in the first place.
(Assuming, of course, that he ever was, but that still remains to be proven at this point.)

My opinion. Kids do not play outside much any more. Porch sittin is a lost art. Instead of kids worrying that someone will see them do wrong and call their folks, kids know that their folks will say "Not my precious child and keep your nose outa my business".

No one wants to get involved. It's not my problem if it doesn't come knocking on my door.

People live for years in the same house and don't know their neighbors.

And, folks are scared. I know that after my aunt was murdered, my outlook on kids changed. The 2 16 year olds that murdered her were both kids I would have opened my door for, and let come in to use the phone. I hate that they took that innocence away from me.

For some reason, right now I hear my mommas voice in my head sayin "We are goin to hell ina handbasket".

That's why it confuses Me.

I lived next door to old lady B**** for My entire childhood. She sat on her porch every evening after supper (yes, country folk do call it "supper") and well into the later hours. She knew every kid in our town and she absolutely would scold you for coming home late. If she didn't know you, she'd ask you what you were doing out so late at night. (In any town that has a small population, nine o'clock really is "late".)

Funny how times change.

Zimmerman's pursuit is recorded on the original 911 call, plain as day. The cell phone conversation between Martin and his girlfriend show that Martin was being pursued, plain as day.

Those ARE the facts.

He did not pursue he followed there is a big difference.
The conversation also shows that Martin thought he had lost Zimmerman and decided to turn and confront him , plain as day.

And back then if a kid had been in the neighborhood a week everyone would know who he was.

Pursuit implies intent to confront and detain follow would only mean observing.

I'll be straight with you. I didn't know the definition until I was grown.

How nice for you.
Do you think media hysteria about kiddiefiddlers is worse than kids being fiddled with impunity?

OK, no bickering, dangit!

I can't do a poll on this because it would be moved to Politics and I can't throw up a random poll in the Political section.......

How many of you would have noticed a kid that didn't live in your neighborhood?

Answer my question and I'll stop bickering.

Is it better or worse that people have a slightly clearer (albeit media hysteria driven) idea about the sort of predators that might be taking an unhealthy interest in their kids than they did when we were kids ourselves?

You don't have to like it. Doesn't make it any less true.

It's not exactly a word that shows up in a small towns Elementary school's spelling test.

That's actually a damn good question.

(Don't know how we got here from there, but still damn good.)

I honestly don't know. I think sometimes, we steal the childhood away from children. It's supposed to be the adults who are more aware of the dangers and guide their children accordingly. There's got to be a middle ground. At least, that's My hope.

So now you are calling Martin's girlfriend a liar.

Boy, you are on a serious roll here.

And you take her word before she testifies in court . . .

Pursuit implies intent to confront and detain follow would only mean observing.

Closing the distance when following means pursuing. After the person being followed takes a turn to avoid being followed and then the 'follower' now suddenly appears at a noticeably closer distance than previously would constitute pursuing.

According to Martin's girfriend's testimony, Zimmerman was close enough to confront Martin verbally, whereas previously he had been in his car.

Zimmerman had intent to confront and did in fact confront the person he was pursuing.

So you are correct, that's what pursuit means.

Which every evidence obtainable and allowable in a court shows; that Zimmerman ignored the 911 dispatcher and eventually closed the distance sufficiently enough to cause a confrontation.

If Zimmerman had stayed in his vehicle as advised and not instead pursue and succeed in overtaking Martin there would not have been a confrontation.
