People of course try to make sense of such senseless events.

I could speculate. There are a few vague indicators...

And that is all that they are at the moment: unsubstantiated, tenuous hints. Therefore I prefer to not speculate at this moment in time.

This is the only certain fact: someone shot a lot of people, killed a dozen and wounded several dozens more. That's it for now.

Because the end result of taking that approach is going to Stephen King getting a lethal injection while some twat who insists that he's a serial killer because he read The Dead Zone at an impressionable age blubs his heart out at Oprah and probably gets a fucking book deal of his own.

Depends on how stupidly or intelligently you frame the political debate. It's going to *get* framed, anyway - in terms of lack of authority and morals in the upbringing of youths today, violence in entertainment, weapons control, or whatever else. So, we might as well make it intelligent rather than stupid.

Screw that. If people can't be expected to take personal responsibility for spree killings, then they shouldn't be expected to accept it for anything else at all.

See . . . that's kind of what I mean. Why assume that this automatically goes to that old debate of 'Ah - the limp-wristed liberals will say it's all society's fault - to hell with that, pardner?'

SilverMark -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 11:43:33 AM)

Obviously another sociopath slipped through the cracks....

LadyHibiscus -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 11:47:36 AM)

Aren't most sociopaths destined to slip through the cracks? It's almost part of the definition.

Oi! I'm a limp wristed liberal myself...

This will be a nightmare here, the perfect distraction from economic campaign issues!

kitkat105 -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 11:51:14 AM)

As someone who loves the whole cinema going experience, this is so sad that something horrific could happen to people doing something so normal & ordinary. May not be an act of terrorism, but still is an attack on people's freedom to be able to enjoy something safely.

<commence comic book nerd> The end of the movie is going to be potentially sad enough. It's going to be surreal that this incident will also be linked to the movie forever.

TNDommeK -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 11:51:27 AM)

Dude, what the hell??? Who messes up batman movies for everyone?? Jeez. Shooting people?? Wow. this world, I tell you.

I was quite impressed by the post that's just been made in P&R saying: "can we not politicise this, please?"
fat chance (particularly now that there's a thread on the subject in there), but a nice thought.

This is correct.

Point # 2 - someone will try to make this about the movie.

His parents live here in San Diego. I truly feel sorry for them. On top of everything else, their street is under siege by the media.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 11:56:16 AM)

From the news I am getting, it seems his mom may have known he had some issues, but nothing that could end like this.

I feel sorry for her.

Lucylastic -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 12:04:04 PM)

I read this and cried, dammit, what a murderous tragedy, just horrific, pointless, and scary. My heart goes out to the families and friends of those killed, and those who witnessed it. I dont know how anyone makes sense of this.
We just had a shooting about five miles up the road, a 14 year old girl and 23 guy killed along with 19 wounded at a barbecue block party*get to know your neighbour* kinda deal.
When does it stop.. is there any chance it will?
for damn sure something needs to change.

Its why I posted here and not over there. I want nothing to do with the politics of it, bah, sod that.
trivialising it for pot shots is yeah beneath even me.

Using FR:

I got hit with this news first thing this morning (Himself is a news hound).

A tragedy for all concerned. The shooter is almost certainly a schizophrenic off his meds.

That our current social infrastructural here in the US cannot come close to caring for the severely mentally ill *is* a political issue, IMO.

That is a good point Chatte, Many countries including the UK and Canada as well as the US treatment of mental illness is horrendous. in that respect.
There is obviously a lot of room for reform, but personally for me, it needs to be addressed without partisan blame.
The likely hood of it occurring any time soon is bleak tho and I include the other countries I mentioned too.
I just am too saddened to see it (the murders) happening at all.

DaddySatyr -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 12:16:47 PM)

Firstly; I feel worst for the victims, obviously. They went to a freaking movie theater and had no idea that this would be the outcome.

The unaccountable horror that they have faced will scar all of them - in some way - forever.

Next, I feel awful for the people who were there who didn't get hit. While they're lucky in avoiding a shower of hot lead, they too will be scarred for life if by nothing else than some level of "survivors' guilt".

The mother/parents of the dirtbag perpetrator also has my sympathy this is almost a parents' worst nightmare and I cannnot fathom having to deal with something like this.

Lastly, I don't know (yet) whether or not to feel sorry for the shooter. He may have been mentally ill or he may have been like so many "thrill-seekers" that we've read or heard about in recent years.

If he is the former, I have some sympathy but only a modicum. If he is the latter; may he suffer for the rest of his days (which I hope will be short) for the horror he has perpetrated on innocent lives.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

P.S.;

stand by for the gun control lobby to jump on this horrible tragedy and use it to their optimum advantage, also.

kitkat105 -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 12:35:55 PM)

I don't see how someone who's unmedicated with a mental illness could do something so elaborate and well planned. The schizophrenics I've looked after have a hard enough time attending to personal hygiene and eating... there's no way they could do this.

I agree with DaddySatyr. I feel awful for the families of those who've lost their loved one, and sending healing vibes to those who are physically (or emotionally) hurt by this.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 12:38:14 PM)

It's impossible for us to diagnose him, and who kknows what intel we'll be offered. Really, I don't think the 'because I can' reasoning should be discounted.

Moonhead -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 12:51:20 PM)

I'm still thinking of the attention seeking thing: that's probably the biggest movie this year, and he's upstaged it. If your head is pointy enough and contains enough confusing internal noise, you might think that alone's worth fifteen dead strangers...

LadyHibiscus -> RE: 12 killed, 50 wounded at screening of Batman movie (7/20/2012 12:58:36 PM)

Dramatically killing a bunch of strangers certainly seems like attention seeking.
