Yes they do...and that was the point (I think, correct me if I'm wrong twice) of this post. It HAS gone too far.

I think the "point" of the OP wasn't to say that PC has gone too far, but to say that others are living and, more importantly, *defining* their lives in ways that conflict with her definitions - and that, because of that, they're wrong.

Which is BS.

I agree that some aspects of "PC" may have gone too far - but I don't believe that was the real nuts-and-bolts point of the post.

Actually... being her owner I think I can say with some authority... The fact that in many instances "PC" may have gone to far is exactly the "nuts and bolts" or her post... The reality is ImpGrrl... she really doesn't give a rats ass what someone chooses to call themselves. Nor does my husband and I... what we care about is honesty.... plain and simple. If you honestly believe you're a switch... well, good for you. If you wanna believe you're a cat then have a blast....  The point here is that what you choose to believe is totally up to you and what I choose to believe is up to me... and  if you want to tell me I'm full of shit (or vice versa) then you don't, or shouldn't, have to state it in a manor that deadens the truth of what you are saying in an attempt to avoid offending someone elses delicate sensitivities. That's the nuts and bolts of her post.

I go to the store(this is a rather extreme example but at this point i believe anybody who did not get this after Celeste's goat fucker does not equal animal lover post needs one), i buy a box of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, i go home open the box and pour myself a big bowl of Purina Cat Chow.

Upon reading the ingredients list and studying the packaging closely in the store, you discover that it looks and sounds a heck of a lot like the Cat Chow you've seen in the past - you can then decide whether to buy it and risk being disappointed later, or put it back on the shelf.

It's none of your business, and it's not your say, whether John Doe's definition of slave doesn't match yours.  You can easily pass him by, and find the box of cornflakes you're looking for elsewhere.

The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

For a bunch of people who don't care what people call themselves...y'all certainly go on about it.

ImpGrrl,

Is there some reason you feel the need to continually goad at others?

"Goad"?  No. Respond to the thread, kinda like everyone else?  Sure.

Holy crap, can you imagine how messed up and complicated the world would be if everything were mislabeled in this manner? Sure, we can analyze it all under a microscope to see if it really is what it says it is....but wouldn't there be a lot less wasted time and energy if we didn't need to go through all that bullshit because there was no reason to believe that it would be anything other than what it said it was? Because it was labeled correctly in the first place?

One man's "cat chow" is another man's "cornflakes".

Yup, you're right. I am sure that somewhere out there there is some eccentric freak who thinks that a bowl of cat chow is preferable to cornflakes for breakfast. But Purina labels "Cat Chow" "Cat Chow" and Kellogg's labels "Cornflakes" "Cornflakes" because they are not marketing their products to eccentric freaks....they are marketing them in a way that will be best understood and recognized by the majority. Personally, I am glad it works the way it does.

The trouble is, we've been trying to apply this metaphor to humans, and human relationships.  I'll admit - it isn't working.  It didn't work when twicehappy started it, and I made the mistake of trying to continue it.

The point is - we are trying to describe *relationships*, and *people* here.  Not cat chow or cornflakes.  Not easily defined packaged products, but complex beings.

Complex beings, and relationships between those complex beings, *can not* be shoved into clever marketing packages.  They can not be boxed and packaged and labeled like food.  Their ingredients don't follow a predictable chemistry-set set of reactions when combined.  The same amounts of corn flour and sugar thrown into each of these complex being produces a wonderfully different flavor from the other.

Thus, I repeat - one man's cornflakes is another man's cat chow.

Well I agree with ya, but we both know the others won't.

Agrees...
And I prefere kellogs to asdas own brand - they are just cardboard to me.

Whiskers is different to kitikat - might both be cat chow, might even both be chicken liver - but cats know the difference.

Much of this becomes unnecessary when you get to know someone beyond intial interaction. I don't WANT to stroll around upsetting people to the point where what I actually have to say goes unheard. There's little to be gained that way.

I'm not even AWARE of polically correct terms in many areas.....I politely use references that seem close or correct. If I offend unintentionally, it's usually seen AS unintentional.

Interaction can be tricky at the best of times, even with those close to us, people that KNOW us, people we love and care for.....we can STILL offend or upset....... all it says to me is that more dialogue is required.

catize -> RE: Is Political Correctness now affecting the bdsm community? (6/18/2006 11:22:23 AM)

Political correctness serves a purpose; to make people question their negative assumptions and prejudices.

If I ask you all to quickly list 10 movie stars, how many of you would include both genders and all races?   PC underscores the necessity of accepting diversity.

Political correctness also serves the purpose to make a point.

I am employed in a clinic where nurses are assigned to work with certain doctors.  People ask me, “Are you Dr. X’s nurse?” and I reply, “No, I am the nurse who works with Dr. X.”

Does it matter which way the question is asked?  It certainly matters to me.

Is my response annoying in its political correctness?  Perhaps, but I will continue to persist because I want people to get it.

Maybe there is some over-kill in how PC is pushed, but sometimes it takes a bludgeon to get people’s attention.
