GotSteel -> Mental Illness (7/26/2012 7:58:44 PM)

In the past, some posters have shared with the community that they have stopped taking their psych meds. This certainly isn't the only forum I frequent but I haven't seen this sort of thing on other forums. I'm really starting to wonder, WTF?

Is this confirmation bias on my part, am I getting suckered by anecdotal evidence, are other people coming to the conclusion that we accumulated more than our share of those who need professional help? If the latter does anyone have an explanation for why?

pyschosubmission -> RE: Mental Illness (7/26/2012 8:00:06 PM)

Has this thread not been discussed and then deleted in the past?

littlewonder -> RE: Mental Illness (7/26/2012 8:01:52 PM)

Bdsm attacts a lot of the "outsiders" who are on the fringe of society and therefore you're going to have a major number of those who are not exactly sane or normal or part of the society at large. It's kinda one of the reasons why I've never really been interested in attending bdsm stuff or to go certain places where such people hang out.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: Mental Illness (7/26/2012 8:21:11 PM)

None of those things: This site deals with extremely personal issues in a way that demands openness and this may make them feel safe admitting that.

I have a few friends with loved ones that stop taking their psych meds. It's apparently very common. The general progression is:

A) Take pills and feel better.
B) Stop taking pills because you feel you don't need them anymore.
C) Go back to having major problems.
D) Have an intervention where you are pretty much forced to take pills.
E) Rinse and repeat.

Winterapple -> RE: Mental Illness (7/26/2012 8:31:29 PM)

I doubt the population here has a higher number of people with mental and emotional
issues than any other message board
of like size. I think a board on a kink
site is going to attract more let it all
hang out types. I mean if you'll discuss
butt plugs and watersports why would
talking about panic attacks and depression
bother you?
Mental illness of various sorts is very
common. I believe mental health issues
are the number on reason Americans
get disability. There might be a slighty
higher tendency for bdsm people to
have emotional problems but it just
may seem that way because they're
more likely to be candid amongst
themselves about private things that
some people are ashamed of and fear
being stigmatized by.

Something many people are not aware of, is precisely how badly these meds can affect you.

I would take restraints over antipsychotics if I were a danger to others, even long term.

And that's not because of the shorter lifespan you have when on those meds.

The relationship which ended awhile ago was similar to this... in fact I had forgotten that aspect. She started to feel that she was controlling her chronic depression with out medication through dietary changes and meditation. Not to knock either element but I think they would have been more efficient if she had stayed on her medication. Thinking back, the "issues" we began having, or to be more precise that I was told I was having, came a few months after she stopped taking her anti-depression medication. Of course this is just anecdotal and my own perspective... she is 'happy', so I could be completely in the wrong. It would not be the first time.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Mental Illness (7/26/2012 11:03:36 PM)

Well, 'happy' is relative, innit?

Actually, until I read this thread, I had forgotten that entire aspect of the train wreck. I had been asked by a couple of friends what the fuck happened and I had no honest response, I didn't know. Though this may or may not be a deciding factor in the ending, it definitely correlates.

Slightly off topic:
It's a difficult situation and one I have personally been in. For some people with mental illness their insight into their own condition and functioning is distorted. This is why sometimes they fall into that cycle of going on meds -> coming off meds -> breaking down -> going back. Not to mention it fucking sucks being a slave (no pun intended) to big pharma. Knowing that a little pill can contribute to your sanity. I hate knowing they take advantage of some of the most vulnerable people within society like this.

Back on topic:
I suppose the reason why some people are open about it within BDSM is the fact that for whatever reason kinky people are perceived to be more open minded, accepting and understanding of people and their personal baggage.

And we know how *that* works out on a lot of threads. [:D]

*snort* Exactly. I was being too polite to go there. [;)]

Do you recall Mike Tyson being convicted Re: Desirae Washington? Do you recall him going to Jail? Do you recall him throwing a TV at the bars? Do you recall him being put in isolation? Do you recall his yearlong sentence being over in a week?

The police have a nasty habit of taking things away from people.

There is not much worse than being in a cell with out your meds for a week.

Before you contradict me, take in that my father murdered his infant sister. And named his first daughter after a girlfriend he electrocuted ten years earlier. I also spent a week in jail, not long before Mike did, and crawled back from the door to hell. I'm pretty sure my head left a dent.

Meds don't just suck rotten donkey dick, meds can worse than kill you. And Cops think it's funny. Most folks ought not be on 'em.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Mental Illness (7/27/2012 1:22:46 AM)

I'm confused. I remember Mike Tyson doing three years of a 6 year sentence.

One week? or did you mean one week in solitary?

Peace and comfort,

Michael

stellauk -> RE: Mental Illness (7/27/2012 2:39:43 AM)

Oh here we go again..

Might I suggest to some that next time they go shopping at a supermarket on Saturday that they take a look around them at the people who are shopping with them?

Or better still if you're reading this at work in some office, take a look around you.

You're looking at the same sort of people you find here in this community - people. Just people.

But then again you could be looking at the same sort of people who are affected by mental illness - people. Just people.

The same sort of people you can find walking down any street.

And yes, you have people with issues, people who are dysfunctional, people who are shy, people who can be anti-social, people who are maybe going through a difficult time in their lives either through divorce, problems at work, problems with kids, problems with other family members..

Throw in the people who are experiencing financial difficulties at the moment, people who aren't sure whether they're going to be employed next month, people who drink too much, smoke too much, eat too much, people who are being abused, people who have been abused, and so on.

I have this opinion that people who have issues with mental illness just tend to blend in anyway, pretty much the same as they do in society in general.

The thing about medication and mental illness is that it's not always given to treat the mental illness itself, but to alleviate the symptoms and bring relief to make it easier for those who suffer to function and cope better.

Dealing with any sort of mental illness is a struggle, not just for the sufferers, but also for the people around them and the people who provide support.

Besides, mental illness doesn't just affect some people, at some stage it affects all of us, whether we suffer from it ourselves or are close to someone else who is suffering.

That entirely depends on the severity of the illness the meds are taken for. Ever hear of Mabel Pantaleon? She quit her meds, and went into a paranoid delusion.

That's pretty much how my sub's bipolar son was. Before meds he was completely insane and thought everyone was in some conspiracy against him. Now he's a polite hardworking young man.

What types of forums?

LadyPact -> RE: Mental Illness (7/27/2012 8:44:05 AM)

I was wondering the same thing, kalikshama.

I am inclined to think that we have three separate phenomenon going on here. One is that on this type of forum, people are fairly open about what is happening in their lives. Surely on a forum where people can come and share all kinds of secrets about their sex lives, the alternative lifestyle that they prefer, and everything else that comes up around here, being open about a health condition shouldn't be much of a surprise.

This ties in with the second in that our culture has changed. Even if it not a personal habit of your own, it would be difficult to suggest that there aren't folks out there who have half of their life posted about somewhere on the net. We've become a society where electronically conveying our thoughts to others has become the status quo.

The third is that mental illness isn't anywhere near the taboo subject that it once was. People don't especially feel the need to hide it, particularly on this site which seems to foster a sense of security. If we can openly have a discussion about how poorly we deal with mental illness from a health care perspective, the door is then opened for people to share their personal experiences. It may not be on that thread that got the topic of mental illness that is running on the scroll, but it does mean that the subject has been broached and people may be more willing to talk on the topic.
