Antidepressants: Which cause the fewest sexual side effects?

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Mental Illness (7/30/2012 7:52:57 AM)

If that list has the LOWEST rate of sexual side effects, my heart goes out to folks on the others!

I take celexa and wellbutrin and I really haven't had any problems. It doesn't make my depression disappear, it just makes it manageable and keeps me from having what my doc calls the dangerous dark thoughts. Thankfully I haven't had the sexual side effects.

Those are the 2 I take. I took my self off the Celexa this summer, and it just didn't bode well for me, so I am back on it, and realizing it is probably gonna be part of me forever.

You are lucky that you don't get the sexual side effects. When I am not on Celexa, I have so many days where I walk around feeling like one huge throbbing clit. On Celexa, I swear, my clit goes away completely. My mind works, and things still feel good, but orgasm? It used to be I could cum right before my period. Now that I don't have them anymore, it is a rare thing indeed!

Yeah, it's a drug war thing, i.e. the war on poor people and depressives.

The most effective antidepressants are the mood brighteners, and those have this politically unfortunate property that their efficacy is directly correlated with dosage, including beyond neutral mood. Hence, a healthy person could use a therapeutic dose of those and become euphoric without the usual downsides, and in some cases without the risk of tolerance and addiction. This, of course, complicated the drug question significantly. Instead of tackling a more difficult question (i.e. one where the conservative answer is harder to arrive at), it was decided that they should go on the narcotics list. Ironically, the drugs which are best known for their addictive properties remained due to being firmly entrenched in medical practice as the go-to drugs for certain problems. Similarly, older drugs have been retained so long as they have enough side effects.

Used to be you could get drugs like tianeptine (Survector), whose side effects include heightened libido, shortened male refractory period, and in some cases spontaneous orgasms when previously aroused, documented in both genders. By contrast, the SSRIs tend to lead to a state wherein a guy might have four hot chicks lapping at his pole until their tongues fell out without ever getting anywhere, and simultaneously not really caring since he no longer has any interest in sex anyway. The ladies, by most accounts, are no better off. Of course, tianeptine was also dramatically effective and had an onset of action measured in hours to days, not weeks to months like the more common antidepressants (whose times to onset of action are comparable to the average time to spontaneous remission).

Sometimes, the addition of cabergoline or another antiparkinsonian may help, and Wellbutrin has been used for similar reasons, as has seligiline/deprenyl. It always struck me as somewhat odd that we're fine with this. Might as well get circumcised. The upshot, of course, being that it probably keeps the STD rate down. Not much incentive to go screwing around when sex is a chore you'd prefer not to do in the first place, is there?

There are neutral and prosexual alternatives, though, but they don't suit everyone, and many pdocs have little experience with them.

And, of course, celibacy is better than depression anyway.

IWYW,
— Aswad.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Mental Illness (7/30/2012 11:12:55 AM)

I am going to look up the drugs you mentioned, Aswad, since to the best of my knowledge they aren't used here to any degree, due to FASHION, and the current fashion is SSRI's. Our FDA, yanno. Keeping us safe from somethingsomething.

When I was playing medication roulette, my doctor told me that we have no idea how these things really work, it's all largely theoretical, so why Prozac nearly killed me while saving other people? A MYSTERY!

littlewonder -> RE: Mental Illness (7/30/2012 12:24:38 PM)

I have tried sooo many different medications over the years until these two seemed to work to a certain degree. I was at the point that I would be crying to Master that I give up and I was just going to stop trying, that it just wasn't worth it anymore but he made me stick it out and I'm glad he made me. It was just having to find the right ones that worked and the correct doses, which can take an awfully long time to find. I'm sure in a couple years I'll have to go through this again since they don't always work for long periods of time.

DesFIP -> RE: Mental Illness (7/30/2012 1:21:18 PM)

The problem with tianeptine and such is that they're so short lived it must be taken three times daily. Which means most people prescribed it won't take it correctly.

Noncompliance is a huge issue with treatment, and when the side effect of noncompliance is increased suicidal ideation, you're heading straight into lawsuit territory.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Mental Illness (7/30/2012 1:25:52 PM)

I know I would have a terrible time remembering to take something three times a day... I would, but it would be annoying as hell. Imagine the endless crashing!

littlewonder -> RE: Mental Illness (7/30/2012 2:11:01 PM)

I couldn't even remember to take my pills I have now once a day in the morning because my memory is so bad these days. Thankfully I'm finally remembering to do so. I admit though that if I wake up extremely early or really really groggy, I still forget to take them until halfway through the day and then I have to really sit down and think hard....did I take them today?? I dunno...I can't remember....hhhhmmmm.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Mental Illness (7/30/2012 2:12:03 PM)

That happens to me, too... though I figure it out pretty quickly when the crash side effects hit! Astounding how short the half life is on the generic XR.

If only you were allowed coffee, you could take them then [8D]

I can remember to take anything that needs to be on an empty stomach, which I take with my tea. It's much harder for me to remember anything after that. I have to have them where I will trip over them to remember them.

littlewonder -> RE: Mental Illness (7/30/2012 6:35:12 PM)

Yup. I have mine on the kitchen counter just where I make my morning cup of herbal tea and prepare my breakfast. I have a teeny, tiny, beyond tiny kitchen so they're easy to see and stand out lol.But there are still days where I just walk right by them. hehe

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: Mental Illness (7/30/2012 6:47:17 PM)

I'm lucky, my pharmacist puts my meds in a 7 day bubble pack that's also divided into morning, lunch, supper and night time. That way I can't forget what to take when. Considering how many I take every day, it'd be hard to keep track of. And it used to be when I'd get a month's worth. Now, I don't have to worry about it.

littlewonder -> RE: Mental Illness (7/30/2012 6:52:30 PM)

Oh I'd still forget lol. My memory is foggy these days. I'd still walk right by them like they were not even there. lol.
To help me with remembering things, as soon as I know of something I have to remember, I put it into my iphone calender so that it rings to remind me. Otherwise I'll forget about it in 5 minutes.

tiggerspoohbear -> RE: Mental Illness (7/30/2012 7:06:34 PM)

I've got the same short term memory loss. I hate it because it's just gotten worse as the last 6 or 7 yrs have gone by. I don't know how often I look for my keys, my drink, my smokes, my lighter, my sun glasses, anything small that doesn't jump out at me.

kitkat105 -> RE: Mental Illness (7/31/2012 4:53:53 PM)

I take mirtazapine (Avanza, Remeron). It's one of the few with no sexual side effects (in fact, it helped me develop a libido). But, it causes tremendous weight gain (only 2nd to olanzapine). I've gained around 35lbs which with a history of disordered eating has been pretty detrimental to my non existent body image but how it (along with dramatic life changes) has helped my depression makes me want to stay on it.

It's also taken at night and often used for insomnia.

I don't know your total weight gain Kat, but you might like to ask your doc about topomax. I'm being taken off a med or two and put back on that. It's one that docs don't completely understand why it makes you lose weight. But when I was on it previously, it worked really well for me.

O, and you've got c-mail. [:)]

Is not Topomax specifically a seizure control med?

All anti-seizure meds are possibilities for bi-polar disorder.
Topamax is also used as a migraine preventative and has recently been approved for use in a weight-loss drug combo.

kitkat105 -> RE: Mental Illness (8/1/2012 11:16:15 AM)

AngelikaJ is right... a lot of anticovulsants are used in the treatment of bipolar/mood disorders. It's to do with their effect on brain chemistry just like other antidepressants.
