Isn't it great to enjoy watching events that you previously did not care about?

I agree except for the part about Water Polo. I remain of the opinion that Water Polo may well be the most boring sport ever conceived.

And they're standing there tossing the ball back and forth... back and forth... back and forth... and he throws the ball at the goal and its a score because the goalie can't move fast enough in the water to do anything... and now they're swimming to the other end... and now they're standing around tossing the ball back and forth... back and forth... ZZzzzzzz...

You've never watched Cricket have you? It's even fucking boring to PLAY.

We did get to see sixty seconds of Zara Phillips! I'm surprised that the equestrian stuff isn't shown more in the UK.

The outcomes are not as relevant to me as the performances, so I don't mind seeing the results early. I like seeing sports that aren't baseball/football/hockey.

I don't understand that sport. Jumping over fences is one thing but getting a horse to prance about in a square? Even the jumping over of fences is more related to how long your horse's legs are than anything else. If you rode a horse with long enough legs you could get it to tiptoe over the barriers without breaking a sweat.

Hey! Cricket isn't that bad! Of course, all Aussies watch it on a hot day while drinking copious amounts of beer.. so that may enhance the experience.

I'm noticing an awfully large number of slapped buttocks in the women's weightlifting. I think it's some kind of massage, but I wouldn't mind betting that's an excuse.

Or golf?  Hit the ball and walk for 5 minutes.  Hit the ball and walk for 5 minutes.  Wait for the people ahead of you, then hit the ball and walk for 5 minutes.  Spend 10 minutes looking for your ball in the rough, then hit the ball and walk for 5 minutes.

I like beach volleyball. I am still disappointed that the show jumping isn't on the web.

Michael, Michael, Michael, we are surely not worthy!!

Isn't it great to see history being made?

So many wonderful athletes! Today I was also impressed by many others: Kayla Harrison, Missy Franklin, Katie Ledecky,
Jessie Ennis, Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce.

It was hard not to tear up when watching Oscar Pistorius!
Incredible!! The fastest runner on on legs!
This has to be one of the best Summer Olympics, ever.

Oscar Pistorius finally gets to seize his opportunity

well i have watched all of the dressage via the bbc online live video link. however, when i tried watching the show jumping yesterday i got a text to say i'd used all of my monthly dongles 15gb doing it. it's rediculous that this is the only way to see all of the equestrian games, and yet it is hugely gb expencive. i have 9 days to go before my contract resets, so i'm now borrowing my son's dongle. i won't be able to watch the rest of the dressage next week now, let alone the showjumping which i will only see if i just happen to be home when it's on. digital very much has its downside when you can nolonger record things without paying out for new devices to do so. my video player won't record from my new tv, in fact my new tv doesn't even recognise that it is there

dressage is about strength, agility, willingness, and expression of movement. it takes years to train a horse to that level, and a huge amount of talent from the rider to do it. it's shear joy to watch a horse give its all for its rider.

showjumping is supposed to be dressage with jumps inbetween. however, that doesn't mean that a showjumping horse can do what a dressage horse does at top level, or the rider have the ability to do it either.

as for length of legs on the horse. no that doesn't work. my arabian stallion was only 14.2 hands high, tiny compared to most show jumpers. however, he could jump a 5ft high, 5ft wide fence with no problem. alot of much bigger horses would struggle with that. now add into the fact that the horse can't actually see the fence he is supposed to jump when he gets close to it, and you have added extra difficulty.

i've done 180mph on the back of a motorbike, jumped 6ft fences on a living creature with a mind of it's own, ridden some of the most difficult horses possible, and galloped at around 35mph on a racehorse. feeling the movement of that horse, and knowing he's doing what i ask by his own choice, that i really have no chance if he doesn't want me on him, and having him want to do those things for me is preferable to anything else i have ever done.

i see no point in alot of sports.....kicking a ball round a field for one, and yet so many people (mostly men) think it's the best thing out. each to our own, but the dressage stands were packed. the same can't be said for alot of the other sports.

It is expensive to train for the Olympics, and I think American Olympic hopefuls, should get subsidies or assistance in covering the training costs.

Here is an interesting article about "China's Olympic dream factories".

i have watched quite a bit, but then i'm in the uk. however, i've had to watch all of the dressage through the live video link on bbciplayer. they never show any of the equestrian unless it jumping. so today i've sat and watched all the dressage to see GB in the lead at the end of the day, and Canada disqualified for one of their horses freaking out. i was actually quiet emotional about it feeling very sorry for both horse, and rider

Canadian girl here just wanting to clear this up. Tiffany's horse was not disqualified because it was FREAKING OUT. It was a MEDICAL disqualification due to an area of inflammation above one of the hooves. Unlike some decisions, medical dqs in riding cannot be appealed.

Congrats to Michael Phelps, but I think he has made the right decision on retiring, and hope he sticks to it. There are a lot of other younger swimmers out there who deserve a chance to show what they can do.

Soccer. Oh my. Women'n semi final. Oh my. Canada vs the US. Sigh....... Please don't get me wrong, I have nothing against th USA, most of my friends here are Americans. But understand this. The ONLY reason the USA won was because of two, not one, but two questionable calls on the part of the ref. It came down to overtime, and the winning goal was hard won. Both teams pressed it to the wall. Too bad the ref had decided who should go against Japan for the gold, instead of letting the teams decide.

So like .. who is Zara Phillips?

Since no one else has answered this for you, Zara Phillips is Queen Elizabeth's granddaughter, via her daughter Princess Anne. This makes Zara cousin to William and Harry.

Here in Canada we have practically around the clock coverage. CTV is the main carrier, along with TSN and SN. There are also three or four french channels providing coverage. If you have an android device there is a CTV Olympic app that is just fab. Up to minute results on ALL events, with many available for replay after the fact.

Concerning the U.S-Canada soccer game:

Since I had to grin and bear it watching the U.S. lose the hockey gold to Canada in the last Winter Olympics, I would just like to take a moment to say:

BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!!!

YEAH!

USA! USA! USA!

NBC's coverage is horrible and here's one reason why... Other than that, I enjoyed watching Douglas, that girl has some serious charisma.

i'm very sorry but the horse was rang out of the area and disqualified because it did spook and freak out during the rain. i was watching live. now dispite what may have been found out later the fact remains that the rider could not get his horse back under control within time and was eliminated, hence disqualifying the whole team. the horse was napping, and rearing. that in my book is freaking out. he point blank refused to go forward into the corner of the arena. i felt very sorry for both horse, and rider. but that's the way it was.

edited to take out that the horse bucked, on rewatching he was just bunny hopping.

Okay, you might be right. I am talking about the jumping horse! I know little about it, and did not take into account that they are two seperate teams. My apologies.

Now, back to soccer. FIFA has decided to investigate the coach and the team for comments made after the game. How about investigating the ref, and all the missed calls, including one out of bounds not called, and a handball on Rapinoe ignored.
