Well, that was the 80's, before average CEO to worker pay was 400-1. Also, Ive never heard of a local president with a 6 figure salary. I know mine only makes about $60,000 a year to do what he does. Nice try with the lie machine though.

Geoff, back when I was a teacher in the late 80's, our president was well over 100K. My starting salary was 23K plus whatever coaching stipends I could scrounge up.

Never leave the truck????? Once a week I watch my garbage man get out of his truck at every house on our block, carrying the cans to empty them into the truck.....

Where or where to household garbage cans empty themselves into the truck????? Now some with a long history get to work the corp accounts, but they most often have to move the dumpster to the front of the truck so it can be lifted into the truck,

You want to do either of these jobs/????on a day like today where it is in the high 90's and well all sorts of crap crawling around the cans

I guess I'm silly to think that a guy that drives a garbage truck shouldn't be paid $27 an hour plus free or nearly free benefits.

You think $52,000 a year plus health insurance to drive a garbage truck is too much money?

Would you drive a garbage truck for $52,000 a year plus health insurance?

Where do I sign up? Ive done a hell of a lot worse for a lot less.

actually, where I used to live in a fairly progressive burb/City in Canada that invested in a new system, being a garbage truck driver was a cake walk.. only one guy needed not two, he never left the cab, his hands never touched garbage, he never had to lift anything heavier than the truck keys, big fingers came out of the automated truck, grabbed the specially designed garbage containers and dumped them in the back.. all he did was drive the truck and push a few buttons... So if you pick the right city, doing that job would be great, especially for that kinda money..

In the city of San Diego they do not get out of the truck. They have a big mechanical arm that picks up the city issued garbage can. If it is not in one of these cans, they do not pick it up. Period.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzsBPLjhl94

They never leave the truck, they push buttons for for $56,000 a year which is paid for out of tax payers money while schools get closed and fire stations are on rolling brown outs.

YSG -> RE: 7 Reasons You Should Join a Union (8/2/2012 10:36:02 AM)

Still, is it a job you could or would do? Somehow I doubt it.

KYsissy -> RE: 7 Reasons You Should Join a Union (8/2/2012 10:38:48 AM)

It is pretty common. It makes economic sense. One guy instead of two, less injuries, and one truck can have a larger route.

3 guys here. One driver and 2 guys who roll the city issued cans to the back of the truck where a hydraulic lift empties them. They then roll the cans back to your driveway.

Ive never heard of a municipal trash pickup where the driver had to do as you describe even way back when there were metal cans.

Too bad your profile is hidden. Else, I could google your local solid waste department and check to see if the above story is utter bullshit. [8D]

As for moving the dumpster, Waste management basically tells people that if the dumpster isnt accessible for the truck to drive up to, then you're not gonna get emptied.

I used to cut rotten whales open for a living. Think you could do that?

Seriously, you don't think a mere woman would be willing or able to drive a truck and handle hydraulics? sexist much?

and i would bet the union was against switching to the new systems cuz 1 driver instead of 2 means less union members..

Here in Indiana, the truck pulls up along side of the cans, a set of arms fold out, picks up the can, and dump them. All without the driver leaving the cab. In Chicago the typical truck has two guys on the back to dump, and the driver never leaves the cab.

At this point in life, no. I own my own business and am doing quite well. I also busted my ass for many years making far less doing much harder work, until the right opportunity presented itself.

So, the answer is yes, I would have done this job.

KYsissy -> RE: 7 Reasons You Should Join a Union (8/2/2012 10:49:24 AM)

I had that thought but I did not want to instigate. A friend of mine is in the UAW, And he is always bitching about the deadwood on the payroll they cannot get rid of. His foreman will walk past 2 guys sleeping and go to him to ask him to do something. So yes it is hard to get rid of a bad employee in certain unions.

But he does love his benefits and pay checks!

Actually Hilly Im saying its a job most people wouldent be willing to do, if only for the smell of it.

Would you have anything to validate this moronic post?

That is why I've never have and never will be a union (Communist Party) member.

It looks more like you like the benifits that dues paying union members got for you but you don't want to carry your share of the load.
Perhaps if you were to visit a history book that was written for someone beyond the fifth grade you might disabuse yourself of your ignorance concerning the why and how of the union movement. You might acquaint yourself with the work conditions that existed before the coming of unions. Once you have acquainted yourself with the facts your post may attain a more mature posture.

and damn proud of it.

Compared to my old job for $5.98/hour , it's roses and daisies.

With this system they can do both sides of residential streets in one pass, which could be why a few years after I started seeing the arm system the three guy system came back. I bet the arm is slower in general too.

Moonhead -> RE: 7 Reasons You Should Join a Union (8/2/2012 11:33:46 AM)

Probably pricier to fit the bin wagons out as well.

even if the arm system was a little slower (& of how I have seen it work it, it was no slower than what we had previous),.. going back to a system of work related injury risks doesnt make sense to me..

OsideGirl -> RE: 7 Reasons You Should Join a Union (8/2/2012 11:58:21 AM)

Here's the thing: You're so brainwashed by the union that you won't even admit that $56,000 a year (probably between $70k - $75k after benefits and overtime) to drive a truck and push a button is ridiculous.

Instead you're here trying to justify a job that requires no education and a skill set that almost everyone with a drivers license possesses, deserves that kind of income. Especially considering the other public services that are being cut due to lack of funding.

How much do you think a garbage truck driver should be paid?

In answer to this question: Less than a teacher or firefighter. Average teachers salary here is $55,000 and the average firefight makes $59,000.00.

If my brother worked in the private sector, he wouldn't have a job.

I don't begrudge him his salary. He has a job that required education and certain set of skills. But he misses so much time that if it wasn't for the Union, he would have been long gone. Instead, they're holding to determine how he should be disciplined, while I'm amazed he still has a job.

I love my brother dearly, but even I would have fired him at this point.
