Labor Unions began in this country in the mid-19th century.
Your timing is more than a little bit off.

And that right there is why we need to return to having a strong labor movement. If Amazon was unionized, those conditions would be completely unacceptable.

According to OSHA they were already unacceptable. Not sure why the emplyees should have to shell out union dues to get the same results that they should already be getting from the government agencies in place. Now if OSHA is fallind down on the job, the answer is to tighten things up, not bow down to unions.

I guess I'm silly to think that a guy that drives a garbage truck shouldn't be paid $27 an hour plus free or nearly free benefits.

You think $52,000 a year plus health insurance to drive a garbage truck is too much money?

Would you drive a garbage truck for $52,000 a year plus health insurance?

I would

Quite.
Because it isn't like government level fawning and grovelling to big business has ever got in the way of regulating bodies doing their jobs, has it?

Never leave the truck????? Once a week I watch my garbage man get out of his truck at every house on our block, carrying the cans to empty them into the truck.....

Where or where to household garbage cans empty themselves into the truck????? Now some with a long history get to work the corp accounts, but they most often have to move the dumpster to the front of the truck so it can be lifted into the truck,

You want to do either of these jobs/????on a day like today where it is in the high 90's and well all sorts of crap crawling around the cans

In detroit they pull up along side of the can, they guy hits a switch and an arm comes out, picks up the can and dumps it into the truck. he never gets out of his seat and yea for that kind of money, I think I could handle that. Even at my age.

Depends. Does the truck cabin have good leg and head room? Most of you non-NBA tall persons would fit fine in the cabin. It becomes a consideration for us...average....height persons. Its akin to flying coach/basic on airlines. Most of you will NEVER know just how uncomfortable it is to fly in coach/basic when your really tall (ooooo exit ilse gives me and extra three inchs.....'woohoo'..../sarcasm). Trust me when I say, as the vehicle gets bigger, the room to stretch out and relax dimishes.

Ask the former employees of Square D, now Group Schnieder, how their union bargained them right out of jobs.

Ask the former employees of Northwest Airlines, how their union bargained them right out of jobs.

Sorry, but I see the inner workings of a union headquarters too much to believe in them. I won't say more because I don't want random forum nutcases bugging me.

Unions were awesome, did a lot of great things. If they really want to do great things now they need to head to the countries where our manufacturing has gone.

Here's the thing: You're so brainwashed by the union that you won't even admit that $56,000 a year (probably between $70k - $75k after benefits and overtime) to drive a truck and push a button is ridiculous.

Instead you're here trying to justify a job that requires no education and a skill set that almost everyone with a drivers license possesses, deserves that kind of income. Especially considering the other public services that are being cut due to lack of funding.

How much do you think a garbage truck driver should be paid?

In answer to this question: Less than a teacher or firefighter. Average teachers salary here is $55,000 and the average firefight makes $59,000.00.

I had that thought but I did not want to instigate. A friend of mine is in the UAW, And he is always bitching about the deadwood on the payroll they cannot get rid of. His foreman will walk past 2 guys sleeping and go to him to ask him to do something. So yes it is hard to get rid of a bad employee in certain unions.

But he does love his benefits and pay checks!
If my brother worked in the private sector, he wouldn't have a job.

I don't begrudge him his salary. He has a job that required education and certain set of skills. But he misses so much time that if it wasn't for the Union, he would have been long gone. Instead, they're holding to determine how he should be disciplined, while I'm amazed he still has a job.

I love my brother dearly, but even I would have fired him at this point.

No its not rediculous. A living wage for honest work is not rediculous. Have you ever thought that maybe a union worker isnt overpaid, you're just underpaid? Also, how much time has your brother missed? Is there a good reason for it?

So if you pick the right city, doing that job would be great, especially for that kinda money..

How much do you think a trash truck driver should make?

LizDeluxe -> RE: 7 Reasons You Should Join a Union (8/2/2012 1:59:16 PM)

Competence. Pfft. I have worked at companies in the past that did not have a union and currently at one that does have a union. The competence point is total bullshit. We have just as many (if not more) slackers here at this union gig than I saw at my previous employer. We have one such zero retiring this week after forty years of service. Totally useless - but the union protected this guy's job all those years. I'm glad that you are proud of your union membership. I am just as proud not to be a part of mine. They can kiss my ass.

I have not tried to justify anything.
You might want to go to google and search the historical relationship between the wages of teamsters and school teachers.

Have you got number in mind?
What sort of education does a firefighter have to have to get the job?
What sort of education does a teamster have to have to get the job.?
How much does a baby sitter make?...we are talking here of some high school age person not a professional nanny .

imo, that would depend on the city/county/town he/she lived in and how expensive or inexpensive the cost of living was there.. what do you think they should make??

nope, I dont see the point in wasting my time sharing that.. people are either pro-union or anti-union and no one is gonna change anyone else's mind on that..

LaTigresse -> RE: 7 Reasons You Should Join a Union (8/2/2012 2:29:14 PM)

Seeing the inner workings of two unions made me realize they are no different than our government.

Feeding the masses a line of bullshit, trying to get them to see their value and how necessary they are..........all while living fat on the dues.

And.........making it nearly impossible to get rid of the rotten apples.

KYsissy -> RE: 7 Reasons You Should Join a Union (8/2/2012 2:44:41 PM)

There is good and bad with unions. There's good and bad without. I think unions got a little bit too powerful and now the pendulum is swinging back the other way. At some point, if things get bad again, union membership will start growing.

As for how much a guy driving a huge piece of equipment on public streets everyday should make, I want well compensated professionals behind the wheel. I don't care if they are union or not. Just as long as they take that responsibility seriously. And that applies to bus drivers in truck drivers too.

Correct, they did start in that time period...but many of the early union movements were communist inspired, communist instigated and communist led. Even if the average working stiff didn't know about the communist influence. Check out the Wobblies(Industrial Workers of the World[IWW], Chicago, 1905). Also check the strong resemblence between the last 5 letters of 'communist' and the word 'union'.

Communism didn't just start in 1917.
