FR The rock bottom thing that I've never quite grasped is why, in any country that seems so fond of the free market, it's so widely accepted that the employers' side should have the freedom to exploit the laws of supply and demand to decide the wages that they want to give, but the workers should not have the freedom to exploit the very same laws of supply and demand to push for the wages that they want to receive. What is it about employers that makes them better judges of their workers' best interests than those workers themselves? Just by virtue of being employers, are employers more likely to be more altruistic people than workers? Because if they are, then there's something badly wrong with one of the most fundamental principles of the free market: that people are driven by self-interest. As a bit of an aside, does the phrase 'free collective bargaining' mean anything to American readers here? That, for instance, it has bugger all to do with a worker being a 'commie' that he wants to join a union. Quite the opposite: he wants to join with the free market and exert his free-market muscle by combining with other members of his workforce.

I think unions served a very important purpose historically. It is not clear to me the extent to which they are useful now - meaning, I literally don't know how different the employment landscape would be if they didn't exist - not suggesting they shouldn't exist. I feel we have such a small unionized work force today that its impact is simply not what it used to be. I will say this. It annoys me when people who benefit or benefited from union wages support conservative politics that are anti-union. A sort of "well, it helped me, but I don't want anyone else benefitting from this" kind of mentality. What is up with that? For example, there should be hardly anyone in Hollywood who is conservative - almost all of the major professions in film belong to unions. Prominent Hollywood Republicans include the following: Arnold Schwatrznegger, Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Drew Carrey, Freddie Prinze jr. , Bo Derek, Charlton Heston, Chuck Norris , Clint Eastwood, Heather Locklear, Jean Claude van Damme, Kelsey Grammer, Lauren Bush, Matt LeBlanc, LL Cool J, Patricia Heaton, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shannon Doherty, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Selleck, and Tom Clancy (this is off of the Internet, and I hope accurate). But my point is, wtf - actors are part of a union, and they get paid union wages. Why are these actors Republican (a party that has been historically anti-union)??

I belonged to a union too, I didnt want to belong to a union but I had no choice in the matter if I wanted the job.. Imo, its the same thing with these actors.. just cuz they belong to the union doesnt mean they actually want to be, but if these big name actors want to be offered the $20/mil per movie work then they dont seem to have much choice.. working on indie movies only goes so far.. I also dont think just cuz you are in a certain profession that it is supposed to dictate your political bent.. so i am not quite sure why you think hardly anyone in Hollywood should be conservative..

The answer is: The trade unions have an apprenticeship program and that is how most tradesmen acquire their knowledge.
