This gets a bit ranty but bear with me

I have a guy renting out part of my house who is
heavily seven day eventist, his father is a deacon
for his church. I have had many conversations with
them about religion, science, evolution and they are
the most closed minded people i've ever met...

They will hear something somewhere and then when
they bring it up as a interesting fact, occasionally it
will be wrong, when I tell them that "I think it's
actually this", they refuse to even consider they are
wrong and when I say something along the lines of
"hang on i'll see what wiki says" they just say the
internet has heaps of things that arn't true on it.

"I believe in evolution, this is how it works, if you
can show me where my reasoning is wrong, I will
reevaluate my belief."
When I say that the type of responces are absolutely
pathetic.

I'm not saying I don't believe in god, I'm saying these
religious people are nonsensical.
I want to discover the truth as well as I can observe
and conceive of it.
These guys just spout retoric and have no desire to
expand their mind, surely a better understanding of the
world would only reinforce their religion if it had any
parallel with the truth.

I absolutely despise close mindedness and ignorance.
How can I believe in something when the people who
do are close-minded and ignorant.

Sorry to all the religious people who read this, I'm sure
there are some good and smart ones out there.

Maybe someone could explain why I shouldn't take the
fossil record and animal breeding as proof evolution is
accurate? For a start.

Im not saying this disproves the existance of god, just
that it makes me see the bible as a pile of lies.

It is not the church that chose them...they chose the church... get my meaning? Otherwise they are people with a closed mind set and they looked for and found a religion that matched their temperament.

So you think that they would not be close mined if they were not religious? I think religion does not make anyone close minded...they chose to be because that is the type of person they are.

I know several religious people that are open minded. More of them than the closed minded sort. That includes my congregation, and several Christians including one local kinkster who is a sub female that rooms with a gay leather male sub and used to date a CD.

I've been pointing out for YEARS that if evolution is wrong, that doesn't prove God exists. (Or even the other way 'round.)

Mama took that view... God exists AND evolution is correct.  She went a step further and believed that God created evolution.  Obviously she wasn't a Biblical literalist.

P.S. It's Seventh Day Adventists

I have an old friend that gets pissed when I post equality shares on FB. He is a convert to Christianity from (non-practicing) Judaism.

On FB, I have friended a woman who is a a friend via my Mom/my Mom's friend (and someone who I hope to meet, when I get to Scotland...) who is a lifelong member of her church, as well as being the PA to the bishop of her local diocese. SHE shares my shares. My Grandfather was a lay preacher/deacon/choir leader at the church I grew up in. He was the first example I ever knew of LIVING Christ's word. Yanno, the whole love one another/treat everyone equally/give to those who have less/etc things...

it isn't religion per se, IMO - it's more upbringing and often, local mores that influence these attitudes, good and bad.

(I think I am not stating this right... and that it isn't getting across what I am trying to say. I blame it on the sun exposure, today, combined with 2 beers...)

In reading the OP it sounds like you are saying that since they won't listen to your version of the "truth" they must be close minded.  They are probably saying the same thing about you since you won't listen to them.

In at least one instance they are absolutely correct...the Internet does have heaps of things that aren't true.

And in response to your query about why the fossil record may not be accurate:
Now I'm not saying this is fact, or true, or that I believe it (in fact, I'm quite agnostic), but there is one train of thought that Satan created the fossil history in order to cause doubt about creation.  If so, then it worked.  Can you prove, via the Internet or any other means, that that is not what happened?

When it comes to Seventh Day Adventists they are pretty hard-lined about their Biblical beliefs.  In a way, that is what makes them Seventh Day Adventists.  That doesn't mean they are close-minded about all things, but they are quite staunch in their beliefs, which to me is really quite admirable.  All too often I see people that claim to be of one religious belief or another, but they rarely practice what they preach.

well thats the thing about "faith" isnt it? believing in something even when it makes no sense and/or contradicts itself..

I think kdsub is right..Your 7th Day Adventists chose that church/religion cuz it matched their beliefs and temperment.. just as someone else with different beliefs and temperment might choose Buddhism instead..

If it aggravates you so, then dont engage them in conversations on subjects they are close-minded on.. you obviously cant open their mind, make the best of the living situation or make changes if you feel you need to..

I used to have religious in-laws.. you have my sympathy..

A few thoughts:

-- I've been a church lady for decades, and I like to think I'm open-minded. Whether I am or not is another question.

-- I was taught evolution in Catholic school (by a priest, no less), so I wouldn't assume that all religious folks oppose the idea. Speaking of evolution, how open-minded are you about it? There have been serious, scientific critiques of Darwin. Has it occurred to you to read one?

-- You mentioned your tenant and his dad. Is your whole conclusion about religious folks based on those two people?

-- I don't know you, so I can't gauge your open-mindedness. One interesting test might be to ask yourself how often or seriously you'd consider voting for a candidate from the party opposite the one you usually favor.

-- G.K. Chesterton once observed that an open mind, like an open mouth, is meant to close on something solid. The ever-quotable Anonymous once warned against being so open-minded that one's brains fall out.

Lets put it this way, if everyone agreed completely about everything then the world would be a boring place, don't you think? That is why God gave nunankind the power to evaluate and decide.

There are scientists who believe in a deity.

Closed minded people are just that, and often they have the structure of a religion to assure them of their right thinking. A friend of mine shared a bit from a textbook from a religious school that claimed that we don't understand the nature of electricity.

Some religious people are capable of believing that their god is capable of creating dinosaurs and moving continents. Others believe a book that was translated and edited over thousands of years by many people is the authentic word of the creator of the universe.

Stop trying to educate their tenants, it's absolutely teaching pigs to sing.

That is easy: The closed mindedness of your out renters is a definite proof that evolution does not occur, otherwise they would have been reasonably openminded people. Consequently, the fossil record and animal breeding must be seen as false positives and therefore not to be trusted.

Only what is inside our universe exist. The Divine is not inside our universe; though I do argue that our universe is part of the Divine. Krishna made the same discovery. He said something like this: "I made the universe out of part of my body, yet I am separate from it."

As for the Bible... Ah, just ignore the Old Testament, and the Jewish parts of the New Testament as well. And make up your own mind and seek counseling from a wise (wo)man if you require it.

People who are intensely invested in a belief will defend it with vigor because you are challenging their core. It is an emotional function, not rational. Your arguments and evidence are on the wrong plane of communication. IMO you should move on and save you and your tenants some aggravation. Just sayin

The best way to expand your mind is to let new things in.

Try reading up on several religions, not just one. Compare them. Discuss them. If you try to evaluate this on your own, you'll come to the pre-established conclusion already in place.

Whatever comes of it, you will know and possibly understand more. That should be the most appealing thing to you.

Muwhahahaha!

And next some people are going to claim that Satan invented shoe laces in order to confound us?

How about owning all that stuff instead of blaming Satan for it?

The people who believe in Satan NEED him, Rule, to shift blame from their not-always-merciful deity.

Good point. I suspect it applies to much more than religion.

I'm religious and belong to a church and I admit there are some things I am extremely closed minded on due to my values and morals that match with my religious beliefs. However, evolution is not one of them.
