As long as they aren't trying to push government policies in the name of their religion, use their religion to negatively impact your life, or use their religion to coerce or discriminate, I don't see an issue. They just believe differently than you. And guess what? They're allowed to believe differently than you.

You live in Australia. I live in the Bible Belt in the South. Guess who's seen her fair share of crazy? I have. And guess who still doesn't stereotype all Christians as fanatical whack jobs? Bingo. Also me. The fact that you are even trying to characterize all or even most religious people as illogical is beyond offensive. Some of the most intelligent posters on these forums adhere to some religion or another and sure have contributed posts a lot more thought out than I have seen yours to be.

I follow a religion that is a minority in the United States. I was also undecided regarding religion for most of my short life. I can understand the marginalization that comes with being "other" so often I sympathize with atheists as they often have to deal with the beliefs of others being pushed in their face on a daily basis, but I cannot sympathize with someone who comes off as prejudiced as you do.

Take your bashing elsewhere.

I will agree with you to a point…after all look at the kids holding fag signs at military funerals…But again taking the extreme exceptions away. Most Christians I know make it a point to allow their children to make choices about religion. I find that their final choices pretty well match the existing make up of percentages of religious to non-religious. In fact as you know organized religion is fading…especially in America and Europe.

So the facts above should disprove your contention that being raised in a religious household will make you close minded on the conflicting explanations of origins of life and the existence of God.

Status: offline 		I'm assuming, to all of those questions, they would answer *God is the original creator* and they would not go seek further then that. If they are trying to convince you to believe otherwise, i'll say it's not really a 'discussion', but them trying to convert you?

I'm sure you already knows this but there are other sources of information. Have you ever heard about the 'particule of God'? The one element that is supposed to have created the mass of every solid things? Now, that would interest me.

The Phelps clan is an example of the more extreme versions of Christianity however that doesn't mean that more main stream denominations to even the very liberal ones don't spend almost a decade and a half indoctrinating their children.

You've got 2 claims there that look to be in direct contradiction, either the percentages are remaining the same or religion is on the decline.

What the data actually says is that the religious beliefs of your parents will have the biggest influence on your own religious beliefs. So if during your formative years your parents teach you to be close minded for Jesus there's a decent chance that you'll end up being close minded for Jesus.

Don't all parents indoctrinate their kids in some form or fashion? They teach kids about familial, cultural, and national lore, attempt to instill values, and strive mightily to guide behavior. One friend of mine, raised by folks she describes as "devout atheists," heard as much from her parents about what she should believe (or not) as I did.

Status: offline 		I used to work with a gentleman who was truly a devout Christian, funny thing he never preached, was never closed minded and never had to tell anyone he was a Christian.

He lived his faith everyday, he displayed kindness, understanding and belief in those around him as much as he believed in his faith. A truly religious person doesn't have to profess his faith, he lives it!

Of all the people I have ever known, I may admire his personal strength more than any person I ever met.

Not at all... there is a difference between organized religion and spirituality ...And by the way were you not indoctrinated at one time?

You have some contradictions as well... Your link at one point says that parent beliefs have the largest influence… then next they say half the children reject religion…and belief is declining.

So half is neutral statistically and would mean the religious affiliation of the parents have little affect…don’t you think?

Of course that is if we were both to believe the website’s statistics.
