Ive come to that view by experience, i'm actively looking for
more experience, when I find myself in a real life discussion
about all these points I have issue with, and I can find myself
connecting with rationality and credibility in the other person,
Then I guess I'll have found one thats not nonsensical...
And let me tell you I look foward to that day.

Religion is inherently political - and what is politics? Think about it: one guy has all the answers, the rest must be eradicated.

Thus, there must be some universal motivation, and lo, at its core, politics is always about getting all the good pussy. The fatal flaw in that approach is that there really isn't any such thing as bad pussy.

So unless you're gay or have the blue waffle twat, getting all the good pussy is an exercise in futility - it's all good.

But that's the rational approach, and sadly, organized religion is not about rationality, it's about avarice and control - doesn't have to be, occasionally sound management happens by accident, but it usually is.

S'why I prefer unorganized religion: control your own ass, and I bet it works out somehow.

Thanks for starting this thread, you must have read my mind.

I was thinking, we haven't had any real good fat threads or religion bashing threads lately.

Thank you so much for starting one.

Now, we just need a really, really good fat thread.

...the type of responces are absolutely pathetic.
...these religious people are nonsensical.
...These guys just spout retoric and have no desire to expand their mind...
...I absolutely despise close mindedness and ignorance.
...How can I believe in something when the people who do are close-minded and ignorant.
...it makes me see the bible as a pile of lies.

You give the impression that you're not terribly open minded yourself. Just saying.

All of the religious people he knows are closed minded, so he must know all the religious people in the world.

There are hard core religion people out there true, they will not hear anything else remotely smart or mind-questionning that someone has to say because they feel it's not their definition of their truth etc. It's errr, well, annoying. The fact that they are living in your house may be the bothersome thing, i'm assuming in other case, you wouldnt be minding about them.

I know a lot of religious people who are into science as well and willing to requestion their own religion (not their faith), not to find the truth, but to explore the diversity of the minds and the faiths out there. They are not trying to find a truth, but are accepting as a whole what everyone thinks as part of faith in itself. Discussing with them may not be convincing about the scientifict facts and to reveal the truth (in my opinion, truth as yet to be ever found), but it's rich in knowledge.

Well, it all comes down to a matter of faith, in the end. You believe or you dont. Nobody will ever win in this kind of debate. So to this i only say *shrugs* accept that you disagree and move on. You're only going to get frustrated otherwise.

A lot of your post is exactly how I feel, only I don't
disagree totally with my roommate or his father
though I am frustrated by the discussions I've had
so far...

They don't have scientific minds so it's not their fault
but if anyone has any explanation that would help me...

Help me with this>>> Life on earth has only existed
10,000 years.
To which I say: I have an understanding of things to the
contrary, the main things that stand in the way of me
believing that are...
carbon dating (can you show that its
wrong),
the fossil record (can you explain why all the animals
that have ever existed arn't in a single rock layer instead
of being spread out),
petroleum (can you give me a
convincing alternative explanation of how oil feilds are
formed)?

And for the record! It's not me that brings this stuff up,
it's them.
I get into the bible philosophy discussions with them
but when it comes to the above stuff they lack the
background to discuss it and end up just dismissing it
without understanding it quoting endless bible
references which I understand, its their proof, but it
doesn't help me since they can't address my conflicting
beliefs, which from my point of view disprove it...

Truth be told, in my experience, atheists and non religious folk tend to be far more close-minded than the church people I know.

Most religious people go through an early on fire wanna tell everyone the good news phase, but then kinda quiet down as they mature in their beliefs.
But non believers, they seem to take religion or someone else's beliefs as a personal affront and ooooh, how they argue...

Course, it's been a while since an atheist knocked on my door preaching his beliefs straight out, but they have done so about various political, social and cultural ideals that are often rooted in non-belief.

But if we wanna be really fair, maybe we should get honest and just admit that almost all people, myself included , are close-minded about something or the other. It's the nature of being human, part of the package.

And in response to your query about why the fossil record may not be accurate:
Now I'm not saying this is fact, or true, or that I believe it (in fact, I'm quite agnostic), but there is one train of thought that Satan created the fossil history in order to cause doubt about creation.  If so, then it worked.  Can you prove, via the Internet or any other means, that that is not what happened?

Right, so that's how science works is it? Anyone can make up any old toss pot theory, and we've got to give it respect until we can prove it false?

This is news to me, I had always thought that if you came up with a theory your challenge was to prove that it is correct.

But I'm happy to play by your rules.

I appreciate that you presented this "theory" as an example, so here's how I would respond if it were presented to me as truth.

I think your theory about Satan creating a false fossil record is full of shit. Can you prove, via the Internet or any other means, that that is what happened?

Until you can, I'm going to assume it's horseshit. If you don't mind.

I can relate in a way that ties a couple of things together.

Up until the year 2000, the only people that I met that espoused this lifestyle were either misogynists or "broken", in the case of the submissive ladies. I had met maybe a couple dozen people that fit this hypothesis.

Up until that time, my statements about "those weirdos" probably sounded a lot like your lamentations concerning religious people.

Thank God (yes, partially for the irony) that not all people who believe in a higher power are "religious" in much the same way that this lifestyle has its fair share of misogynists but, certainly, it also has people that are well-adjusted and fun.

I understand it isn't a direct correlation because most religions teach that theirs is the only "one true way". Therein lies the rub.

I think by definition, someone who is religious (no matter which religion it is) follows a particular set of beliefs and if they fail to accept those beliefs, they're not really "religious".

Thank God for the well-adjusted and fun, spiritual people that prove the stereotype false.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Indeed. Its sad there are so many people so closed minded, be it in religion vs science, right vs left, whatever not to at least respect the other persions perspective...even if it is horseshit. ;-)

Don't a lot of denominations have a problem with the omphalos theory because implying that the adversary can create anything from scratch is far too close to the manichean heresy for comfort?

It is not the church that chose them...they chose the church... get my meaning? Otherwise they are people with a closed mind set and they looked for and found a religion that matched their temperament.

If people were introduced to Christianity upon reaching adulthood I'd agree with you. However, in the current situation where people are raised into their faith that rearing does effect them.

So you think that they would not be close mined if they were not religious? I think religion does not make anyone close minded...they chose to be because that is the type of person they are.

Of course it makes people close minded.

Telling them is the wrong approach. It is better to ask them and let them do their own research in order to answer you. While doing so, they will acquire knowledge.

We are light, energy, and vibration. Period.

That alone should give everyone something to think about, on all "sides."

Unless we reject tin foil kooks like Einstein and Tesla and a century of modern physics since.
