Fwiw, there are Christians who don't take every NT verse literally either. I worshipped with a bunch of them this morning.

Yeah, I don't even think the ones who claim they're taking the Bible literally actually are.

Agreed!

As my friends sometimes get tired of hearing, I like to say, "No one on Earth takes the Bible literally. There are simply differing degrees of honesty about how we approach it."

Of course all religious people are close minded, it is a defining quality of belief. Believers "KNOW" their beliefs are real, there is no doubt, no other possibility, and therefore no reason for the mind to be open. And it's not limited to religion or christians, racism is probably the best example to use to demostrate how belief works, people aren't as keen to defend racism as they are to defend their religion.

People of all types, religious and otherwise have closed minds. It's the person not the religion (or lack thereof) that makes them closed minded. That much I know for sure. ;)

It doesn't take a mind reader to see that this OP was to stir the pot, which he did.

In almost half a century (with some gaps) of churchgoing, I don't think I've ever met a believer with no doubt.

This gets a bit ranty but bear with me

I have a guy renting out part of my house who is
heavily seven day eventist, his father is a deacon
for his church. I have had many conversations with
them about religion, science, evolution and they are
the most closed minded people i've ever met...

They will hear something somewhere and then when
they bring it up as a interesting fact, occasionally it
will be wrong, when I tell them that "I think it's
actually this", they refuse to even consider they are
wrong and when I say something along the lines of
"hang on i'll see what wiki says" they just say the
internet has heaps of things that arn't true on it.

"I believe in evolution, this is how it works, if you
can show me where my reasoning is wrong, I will
reevaluate my belief."
When I say that the type of responces are absolutely
pathetic.

I'm not saying I don't believe in god, I'm saying these
religious people are nonsensical.
I want to discover the truth as well as I can observe
and conceive of it.
These guys just spout retoric and have no desire to
expand their mind, surely a better understanding of the
world would only reinforce their religion if it had any
parallel with the truth.

I absolutely despise close mindedness and ignorance.
How can I believe in something when the people who
do are close-minded and ignorant.

Sorry to all the religious people who read this, I'm sure
there are some good and smart ones out there.

Maybe someone could explain why I shouldn't take the
fossil record and animal breeding as proof evolution is
accurate? For a start.

Im not saying this disproves the existance of god, just
that it makes me see the bible as a pile of lies.

And this is how communication breaks down...

Can any religious person willing to give me the
benefit of the doubt and can believe I genuinely
I am open to understanding new ways of thinking.
Read the following...

I'd appreciate it if you could help me by
addressing my doubts about creation I mentioned
earlier. If you have a understanding of Geology,
Archaeology and Science It would be great if you
could share your understanding of how the theroy
of creation ties in with your understanding of these
topics as the doubts I have come from my interpretation
of them. Thank you.

And might I add fucking sheeesh, last try and I have
no more patience.

I will admit that there are a few things in the bible that I am iffy about. However, I try to keep the time period in mind when reading it. Different time. Society changes. Thankfully.

Hello Aries

You may want to check out this link:

http://simpleapologetics.com/defenseofcreation.html

These are scientists who also happen to be Christians. They support their claims with the Bible and with scientific fact. It may be something you would want to look into. There are several links that involve evolution and other topics many non Christian and Christian people have questions about.

I hope this helps give you answers in an unbiased way.

Bingo Lana, now you are in the game.

The question should be, "How much patience do you have?"

The answer would be close to nil. Everyone's basically said the same thing over and over again: Religious does not equal close-minded. Anyone can be close-minded. Which is a conclusion that I feel isn't too complicated to come to all by oneself without starting a thread that paints people with a broader brush than any I've seen in a while and inciting the livin' crap outta people.

Not to mention all the people adding more paint to the "canvas" making assumptions about how they think religious people are and how they think religious people believe as opposed to how they actually are and what they actually believe.

I can discuss this point further if you like?

LOL! You're not discussing at all. You're simply making the same dogmatic pronouncements over and over again, and each post makes them--and you--harder to take seriously.

ETA: You clearly have a belief--an idee fixe, as the French would call it--about how religious folk "must" act and think, and it's clear that no contrary information about real-life churchgoers is gonna make a dent in it. Good thing you're not religious and close-minded, eh?

Not at all... there is a difference between organized religion and spirituality ...And by the way were you not indoctrinated at one time?

Indeed, there is a difference which is why one of those two things isn't called religion. Even I count as spiritual.

You have some contradictions as well... Your link at one point says that parent beliefs have the largest influence… then next they say half the children reject religion…and belief is declining.

Nope, no contradiction.

So half is neutral statistically and would mean the religious affiliation of the parents have little affect…don’t you think?

quote:

ORIGINAL: http://psychcentral.com/news/archives/2005-08/esr-fap081505.html
two non-religious parents successfully pass on their lack of faith;
two religious parents have roughly a 50-50 chance of passing on their beliefs;
one religious parent does only half as well as two together.

I wouldn't call 50% little effect.

Hello
that is a sad thought, for i consider myself to religious or lets us just say, i believe in a higher being, for i know in my own life i have seen things that have not lessen my faith but have strengthen it, including one nite when four boys attack me where i worked and left me for dead, and here i am stronger.
take care and be safe

Your contention is young people are indoctrinated in a religion by up bringing...If that is the case then would you not say one half of them rejecting religion is not very good indoctrination… I said half of anything is neutral… meaning there was no significant influence during your so called indoctrination. These kids made up their own minds regardless of the religious up bringing making your links statistics conflicting.

To me and most reasonable thinkers would agree spirituality which means…of religion: relating to religious or sacred things rather than worldly things…and an organized religion have a lot more in common then spirituality and atheism.

But as usual we disagree...no thats not quite true... lets say I do agree with you in some extreme cases but not in general.
