Personally, Unless the entire topic of a thread is against TOS....regardless of who starts a thread I think that pulling the entire thread is just poopy. And lazy. Not to mention a disservice to the readers and any who may wish to participate.

I agree with this. I'd go further and say that unless posts actually break the law, they should never be pulled.

In the past we've had some real fucking nutjobs that would appear almost sane if you looked at their posting history (after all their "episodes had been pulled"). I feel very strongly that people should be put on moderation rather than having their posts pulled, that way their jackassedness lives on in the forum's memory.

This^^^

Also I think that if someone walks into the intro section demanding us to bow down ..she is fair game to the snarkfest.

ModTwentyOne -> RE: How many people are under the Mods thumb? (8/26/2012 7:24:19 PM)

I rechecked the "on a budget" thread, and you all are correct... it could have been cleaned up and kept. It has now been cleaned, and if you quoted a banned user, your post was pulled as well. I put the thread in Off topic.

We do not indulge banned users in the attention they seek. When a thread started by an already-banned user is pulled, it is probably the ONE INSTANCE that a thread can be restarted by someone else after being pulled. It would probably be wise to check with a moderator before restarting such a thread.

Again, my apologies for the pull on the "on a budget" thread.

Are the rules about not restarting threads codified anywhere? I was asked and really didn't have a solid answer.

Sorry, no. Think about this... if someone demands everyone bow down, and no one does, but instead says "welcome to the forums", do you think they're getting what they want?

RemoteUser -> RE: How many people are under the Mods thumb? (8/26/2012 7:27:13 PM)

That does happen, crazyml.

I could be wrong, but I think this falls under the heading of "really stupid shit you don't do on the internet, anywhere." I have participated on many forums over the years, and it has never been acceptable on any forum I've ever been on to start a new thread continuing something that a moderator has put a stop to.

File me under, a little miffed at the moment.  I think if it's determined that things need to happen, then they need to happen in a uniform way.  Of course, the last time I got started on that, the thread went poof, and ya'll seem to be having a good time in here, so I'll shut up, and see where it all leads from here.

Actually yes, in a sense, because giving a welcome implies kowtowing. And saying nothing but a welcome implies that particular twat's commentary is acceptable. JMHO.

Actually, I asked him to ease up on the moving gifs. We've had issues with those in the past, and I noticed they suddenly were popping up everywhere.

Thank you. They gave me a headache.

And THAT is not happy in the internet environment where TOS is endlessly invoked. If there is a set of 'everybody knows' rules here, I don't know it.

Time for a sticky? IMO yes.

I went thru the FAQ sticky, and there are several links to articles on forum etiquette. I haven't had a chance to re-read them all, to see if that one is there.

A greeting can be courteous without endorsing anything. I hate half the poorly-thought drivel that is sadly commonplace in that whole section; but if I don't know the person well enough to do anything more than think they are dumb, I can still offer a hello. Sometimes people can be turned around with the right approach (not everyone, but then that's no excuse to throw everyone under the bus, either).

Kaliko -> RE: How many people are under the Mods thumb? (8/26/2012 8:18:06 PM)

I think new users should be forced to go through a hazing process. They would agree to this process before signing up to use the forums in the terms of service agreement that they checked that they read that they never read.

"Introductions" is where we would release the hounds of hell on them. The regulars could smoke cigars and place bets behind the scenes as to how long each new fish would last. We'd soften them up and make them comfortable with DarkSteven's sensibilities and GreedyTop's tackles and gropes. Then we'd spring Kana and LadyPact on them to get their hearts racing good and fast, and then, the cherry on top...triple play: Poise, Cryptic, and Rule. They won't know who to believe anymore.

Then, and only then, if they survive, will we give them the ability to post on and start other threads. They can recover from their week in introductions, scraped and bruised, with a big ol' vanilla ice cream cone to show for it. And if they ask "Why do I have an ice cream cone?" they have to start all over again.

Oh, come on, that would be fun.
