If the state/city has the money to pay them there is no problem. Illinois is going broke.

Right, so capitalism doesnt apply to teachers then, only bankers ?

Clue = Those with the skill set demand any wage they like, when said skill set is in short supply.

76K is about $38 per hour. Why do you find that excessive?
Do you feel that there should be a limit on how much money someone in the u.s. is allowed to b paid for their labor?

In a city where the average family income is $47k a year, I think the teacher of Chicago are more than fairly compensated for their labors.

Their strike is pure greed.

So let me get this straight. You are against greed as a motivator. So in your opinion greed is bad have I got that right? So cops, teachers, doctors, firemen, nurses, mayors and councilmen etc.should all work for what you think is fair. That sounds like text book definition of socialism. Who gets to say how much is fair for you?

Spot on Thompson. The republicans seem to want government intervention when it suits them and not otherwise.

Bankers are paid, or should be, on the financial results of the company. Teachers salaries are paid by taxpayers. I have no problem with teachers making a nice income, but their wages and benefit packages are no longer sustainable. Illinois, as I mentioned earlier, has unfunded pension liabilities of 83 BILLION..This has to be fixed first.

Where is Arnie Duncan ? He is Obama's buddy from Chicago, and the current Secretary of Education. Not a peep from him or Obama on the strike.

That still doesnt alter my point. If teachers are in short supply they can demand any wage they like.

And if you think bankers are somehow paid by results, you must have slept during 2008/09. The ones jailed for running pozi schemes of one type or another were the tip of the iceberg. They got huge bonuses fro ripping off clients by getting them to sign unfair deals. (Just read Frank Partnoy`s book)

I said they "should" be paid by results and obviously that doesn't always happen. There is no shortage of teachers in the US that I know of. When the dust settled in Wisconsin a couple of months ago, some teachers quit to go elsewhere and others replaced them. Happens every day in the private sector..

As for Obama saying something, whats happened to your warcry of less government intervention ? Like I said, republicans only want intervention when it suits, the rest of the time, they call it socialism.

Edited out a point I had already made.

How about his cabinet member Arnie Duncan ? If this strike goes on for any length of time it might pose a problem for Obama. If he supports the union he might hack off many that think the teachers should be in the classroom.  If he supports Rahm, it will hack off the unions.

Still a strawman, do you want government intervention or not ? You cant condemn Obama for not getting involved as you surely would if he got involved.

For the secretary of education, or the president to voice an opinion on    a work stoppage is not government intervention.

Well, working 5 days a week, with 20 days off for vacation, holidays and sick time only equals 8 months. So, whats ya point?

Arne has already endorsed Emanuels plans. He also said a few days ago he hoped the strike could be avoided.

Do the math. 365 days in a year, 182 days spent in the classroom = 183 days off. 6 months on, 6 months off.

So, the average worker, who works 5 days a week, of 52 weeks, which equals 260 days, and gets 20 days off for sick, vacation and holidays, using your math, only works 8 months a year.

I seriously do not get the point you are trying to make, using this "math".

That would be about right for the 'average' worker. Teachers get an additional 8 weeks off.

So fucking what?

They get 8 weeks more off that they are not paid for, most of them spend time during their summer preparing for the next school year, they spend their own funds to purchase basic classroom supplies because parents won't send even a pencil to school.

Teachers aint average, that I will give ya.
