ORIGINAL: cloudboy Good article. Its disturbing to see so much anti-American sentiment; George W. Bush & Co. took the USA from a point of world sympathy (9/11) to world antipathy (the invasion of IRAQ.) In many quarters of the world, we are the new Russians (aka, the bad guys.) We'll never quite know what the world would be like right now had GWB simply waited for Hans Blix to do his job, then instead of invading IRAQ, getting some kind of concessions from it instead. We'll also never know what shape we'd be in now if Gore had won the election and all the ensuing mistakes of GWB were not committed. I'm hoping I read this wrong. Are you seriously saying that the Muslim world didn't hate us before Bush II? Seriously? I would posit that a good number of extremist Muslims have hated our guts since 1947 and that that feeling has just become ensconced in their ancestoral memory. I will also say that based upon this; I understand why they hate us. I get it. We fucked up. Having said that, it's no excuse. If it were, then we'd be justified in going to Afghanistan and just turning the entire place into a parking lot which would have been much more easily accomplished than the edict with which our troops were armed, when we sent them. Sorry, I'm with Butch. These people - on the whole - hate us and look forward to the day when we are no more. In their eyes, there will never be peace with us. The one way that I will disagree with some is that with our over-all construct of how we wage war, we cannot defeat them. We need to change our view of how wars are fought. A campaign of mamby-pamby by an invader will always lose to a campaign of "patriots", fighting to keep hearth and home safe. I warned people about this when we first went into Afghanistan and I will continue to do so. Peace and comfort, Michael
