Over 7000 girls get pregnant in the NYC schools...Huh I guess it is all the girls fault and the boys can just walk away with no worries...

Teenagers are sexually active, they can't get birth control and it seems the boys don't want to wear the free condoms.....

Got any better ideas?????

Or do you think everyone of those girls should give birth and be forced to raise a child most likely alone, and who then pays for the birth and feeding the child, educating the child????All the GOP wants to do is cut those programs

subrob1967 -> RE: Morning After birth control now available at 13 NYC Schools (9/24/2012 7:40:42 AM)

See that women, your vagina's are safe, you only need to move to NYC and pay the ridiculously high cost of living to save them... Oh yeah, and settle for 16oz soft drinks... How awesome is that, NY wants to keep you thin, no matter what.

On behalf of all of us men who like skinny, zit free women, I thank you Nanny Bloomberg.

Do ever address the topic?

Or are you showing how little you really understand the topic?

What is the topic seven?
Why can't you see I did address the topic?

Let me spell it out so your average union worker will understand...

Fargle started a thread entitled... Morning After birth control now available at 13 NYC Schools,

I replied "see women, your vagina's are safe" because this thread is was started as a push back, or counter punch on the so called war on women.

With me so far?

Now I seriously doubt the OP cares how many NYC students are getting pregnant, I honestly believe he started this thread to show "progressives good conservatives bad!"

He's counting on people like you to nod and say.. Yay, girls now have an option is NY schools! And people like me saying "Them murdering bastards how dare they give these pills to young ladies!"

So don't get upset when I refuse to play his game, my reply was on topic, and obviously over your head.

Oh and I don't care about abortion, you should be able to have as many as you like... I'd just like you guys to be honest, and call it what it is... Legal murder.

You can have any sized diet soda you care for. It's just the sugar/hfcs stuff which is a public health issue.

Of course, as a weight management expert, my advice is generally to never drink a calorie if you can avoid it.

subspaceseven -> RE: Morning After birth control now available at 13 NYC Schools (9/24/2012 8:31:59 AM)

That makes no fucking sense, you do not care about abortion, put taking a pill because you may or may not be pregnant is murder?????

So using birth control is wrong? They take the pill after having unprotected sex, they may or may not be pregnant....

Condoms are not 100%, so taking the same pill after having sex with someone wearing a condom is murder????

But wait until you know you are pregnant, then you are fine with abortion????????

I stand by my first post, you do not know what you are talking about,,,pick a side, it is easy to play both sides as you are, you just get to bitch and really never make a choice

I'm not sure I'm in favor of this, as liberal and progressive as I am. While the morning after pill is considered safe, it does have side effects, and I wouldn't want girls to get the idea that they should stop using condoms and rely on this instead, which of course does nothing to prevent STDs. I've taken the morning after pill after condom breaks, and it was not side-effect free, despite also taking Dramamine. I hope there is some monitoring to prevent over use. I don't know that there is a standard for over use.

I was also against putting the morning after pill in vending machines at colleges for the same reasons. I think it should truly be a Plan B, and no barrier to access makes it more likely to become a Plan A. Hell, I'd use it as primary contraception if I thought it was safe to use regularly, but what I consider safe is far more stringent than average.

Introduction

Half  of  all  pregnancies  in  the  United  States  are  unintended:  3.2  million  occurred  in  2006
alone,  the  last  year  for  which  data  are  available.1  Emergency  contraception  offers  women  a  last
chance  to  prevent  pregnancy  after  unprotected  intercourse.  Emergency  contraception  is
especially  important  for  outreach  to  the  4.5  million  women  at  risk  of  pregnancy  but  not  using  a
regular  method2  by  providing  a  bridge  to  use  of  an  ongoing  contraceptive  method.  Although
emergency  contraceptives  do  not  protect  against  sexually  transmitted  infection,  they  do  offer
reassurance  to  the  8.6  million  women  who  rely  on  condoms  for  protection  against  pregnancy2
in case of condom slippage or breakage. Emergency contraceptives available in the United States
include emergency contraceptive pills and the Copper T intrauterine contraceptive (IUC).3,4,5

Safety

...Data are not available on the safety of current regimens of ECPs if used frequently over a
long  period  of  time.  However,  experience  with  similar  regimens95  and  with  high  dose  oral
contraceptives suggests that the likelihood of serious harm from at least moderate repeat use is
low. Certainly, repeated use of ECPs is safer than pregnancy, in particular when the pregnancy is
unintended and women do not have access to safe early abortion services. The label for ella
states that “Repeated use of ella within the same menstrual cycle is not recommended, as safety
and efficacy of repeat use within the same cycle has not been evaluated.”96

Kalik raises some good points. Presumably, sex education is still being taught in the schools in question and they will cover the issues Kalik raised. That said, I think it's a good idea to provide the option. Having a kid at that age is just such a bad idea. It could wreck the entirety of the young person's future.

It sure didn't make mine any easier.

Giving a a drug like this to a 13 year old without the permission of a parent is bordering on the insane. Who will be responsible for the fallout if this drug is found to be dangerous to girls of this age group ?

Probably the parents. [8|]

graceadieu -> RE: Morning After birth control now available at 13 NYC Schools (9/24/2012 11:44:23 AM)

I suppose that's good, since teens have to have a prescription to buy it at the drugstore and it costs like $100, which could be a huge barrier for a lot of people. I think this could really help some kids who are in a bad situation.

But I think that this absolutely shouldn't been seen or promoted as anything but an emergency backup, and there should be condoms and birth control pills available (not necessarily through the school, but somewhere) easily and cheaply. Plan B is neither effective nor affordable enough to use as a main form of birth control - it really is just a back-up method. Also, at least to me, it feels like somebody's punching you in the stomach for a couple of hours. Blech.

This is my point...GIRLS do not use condoms, boys do.......so after all the speeches, it is up to the girls, the boy has no worries..

That is the problem...society still feels it is the girls problem, but they want to restrict what they can do..When oh when will the males have to answer for getting girls pregnant??????? and have more forms of birth control than condoms?????

I understand that their is a female condom, however the article as written seems to be talking about condoms used by males

servantforuse -> RE: Morning After birth control now available at 13 NYC Schools (9/24/2012 11:59:55 AM)

When a school is allowed to give prescription drugs to teen girls without the input of a doctor or a parent is just wrong for so many reasons.

Then they will blame the parents for not being better parents to start with.

New York

No policy in effect.
**Minors can obtain an abortion without parental consent.

http://parentingteens.about.com/od/teenpregfact/a/abortion_laws_2.htm

So they can go through an abortion to terminate a pregnancy without parental consent... but they cant take a pill to stop the implantation, therefore stopping a pregnancy?

No state that I am aware of requires notification for birth control.

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Morning After birth control now available at 13 NYC Schools (9/24/2012 4:03:38 PM)

I am feminist. I am pro birth control. I am pro abortion.

With that said, I am also against teens having sex and teen pregnancy.

So first line of attack is still sex education and strong advocacy for birth control.

But, the reality is, when that fails, what are the recourses? It seems to me that to deal with unwanted pregnancy, morning after pills are surely a better alternative than the much riskier abortion procedure.

I agree with others on this thread that the thing that is worrisome is that the Morning after pill should NOT be used as birth control and, of course, does not offer any std protection.

The good news is that teen pregnancy and births to teen mothers are actually on a decline (although I would personally say the rates are still much higher than one would expect for an industrialized nation). Part of the reason for the decline is better sex education and the morning after pill, and, quite simply, the realization for a lot of young women that having children in their teens, or even in their 20s, is not desirable relative to the alternatives of finishing their education and starting a career.

The goal should be to make teenage pregnancy rates as low as possible. With the increased life expectancy and ever increasing world population that we have, there simply is no need for teens to be having babies. Even though a woman's fertility still ends at menopause, gone are the days when a woman had to start having babies as a teen, and have many, many children, in order to ensure that at least a few survived all the childhood diseases.

The negative impact of teen pregnancy on a society is more than well documented. [sm=2cents.gif]
