A presidential candidate who made this sort of threat to destroy his country's economy would be regarded as little better the a traitor in most parts of the word.

I appreciate your usual approach, YN. It's one I generally follow myself. I'm curious to know if the recent statements by our Senate Majority Leader, a Democrat by the name of Harry Reid, have made it across to your news? Reid has flatly declared that the Senate will not work with President Romney.
If your standard is applied, I guess we just have to pick our traitors, don't we? I'll go with the guy who hasn't already failed once.
As we were discussing in other threads, most nations have a mechanism to provide for a budget, for after all it is one of the three main duties (along with raising revenue income, and drawing up the laws) that a law making body does worldwide. In parliamentary monarchies and republics, no budget = vote of no confidence and leads to a new government (as is the current case of Israel.)
Others, like most the republics to your south, provide for possible legislative sequestering until they draw up a budget, and even provide the deputies be kept on bread and water or military rations in certain cases.
The president and the executive part of government does not have any right to be pleased with the budget they receive but they do have the right to get a budget, and it is the legislative assembly's duty to render a budget.
Thus explains the view I (and likely other offshore viewers) have of the "promise" of further obstructionism by certain parties among the United States legislature, here the assembly would be held in an extended special session, and even locked if necessary in the building under punitive conditions by Supreme Court ruling until they drew up the budget.
