ORIGINAL: dcnovice FR Folks who dislike (or worse) unions may want to read up a bit on labor conditions back in the "good old" pre-union days. Two books that I've recently enjoyed cover the topic in rich and heartbreaking detail: -- James MacGregor Burns, The Workshop of Democracy -- Page Smith, America Enters the World Really. From the late 19th C Pullman strike in Chicago to the coal miners, auto worker, and mass transit strikes in the 20th C, Unions contributed mightedly to the formation of a strong middle class, and kids were able to build a secure working and family life after leaving high school. Unfortunately, that was destroyed by globilization and digital/robotic technology. Just sayin.
