From your own source:

Bottom line, it appears now that Decatur Utilities wrongly assumed they would have to agree to the union contract before traveling to New Jersey to help with recovery efforts. The IBEW said in times of crisis, help is welcomed from union and non-union utility workers.

The company turned away was Decatur Utilities from Decatur, AL. The GM of that company was just on FOX Business with Stuart Varney. They made it as far as a Virginia staging area and are now heading home.

So because one particular town's crew possibly didn't want their help, they just packed up and went home instead of going somewhere else that would be happy for their help? Real committed they are.

Actually, they indeed went 'somewhere else" a few towns away where they weren't required to sign a union agreement and were accepted and are now assisting in the cleanup and electrical repairs.

So, much ado about nothing from some rightwing propaganda organization, which none of it turned out to be true, and like joe the plumber, and palin, and the bulk of the rightwing fantasy jingos, further turns them into laughingstock.

Folks who dislike (or worse) unions may want to read up a bit on labor conditions back in the "good old" pre-union days. Two books that I've recently enjoyed cover the topic in rich and heartbreaking detail:

-- James MacGregor Burns, The Workshop of Democracy
-- Page Smith, America Enters the World

Really. From the late 19th C Pullman strike in Chicago to the coal miners, auto worker, and mass transit strikes in the 20th C, Unions contributed mightedly to the formation of a strong middle class, and kids were able to build a secure working and family life after leaving high school. Unfortunately, that was destroyed by globilization and digital/robotic technology. Just sayin.

I will concur....unions had a valid reason to exist once....but not today.

Really???perhaps you might validate that moronic assumption?

quote:

I hate Unions (notice the upper cap U....I respect them for what they once attempted....but not for what they are today).

What is it that they are today that they were not before?

quote:

I think they're slimier than greased pigshit.

You are entitled to your opinion no matter how ignorant, ill informed or asinine it may be.

quote:

My men make more than union scale.

How about a little validation...otherwise I call "slimier than greased pig shit"

quote:

When unions will readily supply trained workers that I can put in a slot tomorrow morning, who can produce products as easily and readily as I can purchase them from overseas....they're my pal.

Your candor is appreciated

quote:

When they provide me with workers who aren't confined and restricted by union rules from picking up trash on the way back to their car (like I, the owner do/does)....I'm in.

If you hire a painter you get a painter. When you hire a janitor you get a janitor. When you pick up trash you are acting like the owner of the compay who not only gets a salary but profit from the company you own. Why is that so difficult for you to recognize? You hired employees not slaves.

In light of subsequent post now would be a good time for you to admit the ignorance of your post.

Absolutely not because, one can be certified as a Master Electrician without ever getting within 100 miles of a Union Hall.
The only thing a Union card guarantees is that you cannot fire the bearer if you catch him stealing or sleeping or drinking on the job without going thru an extensive and expensive appeals process.

Please address the issue I brought up and not one that you feel you can argue.

quote:

ETA, what the fuck would you ever know about work? You just collect a check every month according to your previous posts.

Actually, I get two welfare checks a month. One from social security and the other as a 100% disabled vet...So I clearly have first hand knowledge about work.

Jersey is such a strong Union state . . . you are not allowed to get out of your car to pump your own gas. Ya gotta wait for the attendent. Just sayin.

When you pump your own gas you are working for free.

Bud....I don't even know where to begin.

That is obvious

DaddySatyr -> RE: UNION! (11/5/2012 6:44:11 AM)

To clarify: The New Jersey law that prohibits non-certified gas pumpers from pumping their own gas is not a boon to the unions (gas pumpers don't have a union, here). It was, actually enacted as a boon to insurance companies. It seems; too many people were pumping their own gas with cigarettes hanging out of their mouths, etc.

Also, because it's illegal in NJ to do anything to promote the sale of gasoline, the gas station owners (mostly the independents of which there are very few, anymore) didn't want a situation where people drove up, pumped their own fuel, paid 4-6 cents per gallon less, only paid for the amount they wanted (within reason, obviously), got a set of four glasses, and drove away.

I repeat: There is no "Petroleum Transfer Technicians Union" in NJ. It was not a way to strengthen unions.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Very proud member of a teachers' union. But if we're so powerful, why do my working conditions still suck?

Thank you for your service...which is ,in the final analysis ,just as important as the service provided by those who wear uniforms.
I have always asserted that a society that compensates it's refuse collection workers at a higher rate than those that we entrust the education of our children to is just a little confused where priorities are concerned.

With the possible exception of san francisco I can't think of any garbage truck drivers who make more than school teachers (caviat...those who teach in religious schools typically make less than the janitor or the bus driver). As for those who wear uniforms that would depend on the uniform worn...firefighters yes, soldiers no.
