Probably because they're all white.
White soul singers are pretty shit, if we're honest. I mean: Michael Bolton? Hall and Oates? Bleaaaah.
(Jacko was a lot better before he started mainlining bleach and got his nose fixed so he looked more like Amanda Lear than a black guy as well, come to that...)

Of course our positions are opinion and I can only go by people...Republicans I know...but i don't believe most Republicans are happy with the existing healthcare system in this country. I believe most see the need and benefit of change...but disagree with the Democrats on how to go about it.

I dont agree, they do,but way to many are misguided:)

To the people who say "But I DONT wanna pay for moochers/women/elderly/poor/unemployed ? moochers, schmoochers.
Sadly you dont get to pick and choose where your tax dollars go, PERIOD
The only way you get to do that is at the ballot box, whether it be state, county or city and then only with a huge broad brush.

Moonhead -> RE: Do republicans even have a conscience? (11/4/2012 11:58:13 AM)

I'd imagine most of teh eeeevil liberal Democrats think that the reason the healthcare reforms are a fucking joke is because the Kenyan nobbled them and removed the single payer provision in the vain hope that the Republicans would vote for the reforms if they were crap.
Hopefully he'll know better if he's re-elected. Maybe not having to spend his second four years fawning and grovelling like a loved up Steppin' Fetchit in a gimp costume in the hope of getting a second term might give him the scope to grow a pair of balls and a spine and deal with the Republicans in the manner they've earned since 2009. I'm not holding my breath waiting for that, though.

Yep.

What's funny is that people waste brain power even thinking that anything extreme like this would even be taken seriously.

I think most feel, rightly or wrongly, that people must take responsibility for their own lives and the lives of their families.
Butch

Many people can't afford to take responsibility for their own lives and the lives of their families when it comes to health care. Republicans know this but they don't care as long as it's not about them personally. No conscience, no empathy.

I don't know about conscience, but I would like to comment on empathy, as you raise it.

People who study empathy don't just study its existence or non-existence, but do measure it. In other words, some people are more empathetic than others. I would say that conservatives might be people who are, in fact, less empathetic than other people.

Some other findings related to empathy. Some research suggests that people are more able and willing to empathize with those most similar to themselves. In particular, empathy increases with similarities in culture and living conditions. Empathy is more likely to occur between individuals whose interaction is more frequent.

Empathy is not a process that is likely to deliver certain judgements about the emotional states of others. It is a skill that is gradually developed throughout life, and which improves the more contact we have with the person with whom one empathizes.

Although controversial, some researchers have found that women (as a population) are more empathetic than men (again, as a population, this means that a given man could still be more empathetic than a given woman).

So, to the extent that people have different life experiences and are "wired" for different levels of empathy, I think their natural inclination to be concerned about others is actually different.

Ultimately, this means a portion of the population will always lack the necessary empathy to support things like social programs. Sad, but true. They are also people who lack the imagination to ever imagine themselves in need of help from others. (Although, I suspect they are the first in line when they actually need assistance). So it is left to those of us who have empathy to worry about the community as a whole, and not just ourselves. And to hope that those with low empathy do not become a huge part of the population.

Low levels of empathy may serve some other biological or evolutionary goal - I'm not sure what though. (I am not really addressing those who have no empathy as that is generally considered a disorder).

Butch . . . ironic that the mandate was a Conservative think tank alternative to Clinton's 1993/4 Universal HC proposal, doncha think?

Republicans had 15 years to come up with an alternative to their own despised 'forced requirement' which was originally presented as personal reponsibility. Ahhh, the ugly stench of political hypocracy fills the air.[8|]

Nothing in the ACA requires you to pay for others' healthcare. We do that now when we as a community subsidize non-emergency ER care. The ACA incorporates private for profit health insurance companies.

They justify it by wanting to give women the death penalty for having a miscarriage.

That's funny. I'm republican and have never wanted to give women the death penalty for having a miscarriage.

Yes you did....if you're a Republican, you can't help it. You also want to see all women pregnant and barefoot, paid 50 cents for the same $1.00 paid to a man, you want to see blacks held back so whites can do better, you want free college for white males, but everyone else has to pay double, you want whites to be able to drive for free in HOV lanes, live in better homes than all other races, you even want all other races to have 18 inch CRT TV's, but 65 inch (free) flat screens for all whites.

Edited to add...I don't want to pay for anyone else's healthcare or birth control. I also don't expect anyone to pay for mine.

It constantly amazes me what people believe.

You also forgot to add that they like to elect people to represent them that state that the earth is 9000 years old. Dont forget that cherry to top the cake.

The answer is clearly no. Most republicans only see life as benefiting themselves and could care less about anyone else. ESPECIALLY those in need

Did the republicans leave four people to die (including an ambassador) while flying off to Vegas?

Did a republican say, "we don't leave people behind" while on a photo-op, and forget to mention, oh yes, if you are in Benghazi, you are screwed?

Oh my, it was not a republican.

You might think that you are a bright girl, but sweetie, don't go there.

DomYngBlk -> RE: Do republicans even have a conscience? (11/4/2012 6:00:53 PM)

They sure left thousands to die on battlefields in Iraq and flew onto a ship to declare that we'd WON! ....

There is - single payer. But the Republican position is that that's socialism and therefore impossible, even though it's turned out in other countries that have tried it to be much cheaper than private insurance, provide better health outcomes and cover everybody.

The ACA mandates have already resulted in over 1 million people getting health insurance that didn't have it last year, but 15% of the country is still totally uninsured. Keeping the status quo just isn't a good option.

The above statement may very well be true....but I don't think the political differences between democrats and republicans is a measure of empathy.

I think republicans may on the whole believe in private charities and churches rather then government tax aid... At least in all bit the most extreme handicaps. Where many liberal democrats think it is the governments mandate to care for the needs of every citizen… Both are honorable and workable if different approaches.

Some of the most generous and kind people I know are republicans, in their political views anyway, but are the first to offer a helping hand to those in need… Just in a different way then most democrats.

Butch

kdsub -> RE: Do republicans even have a conscience? (11/4/2012 6:23:35 PM)

Yes it does...but remember it is the party not the people that are hypocritical… Conservatives are just that no matter the actions of party leaders.

graceadieu -> RE: Do republicans even have a conscience? (11/4/2012 6:25:49 PM)

Of course most Republicans do - people are people. But some of the Republican policy platforms do show a shocking degree of callousness, don't they?

For me, the biggest one is this idea is that the US should torture our POWs. That it should be okay to commit war crimes that have been illegal since WWI because those guys might be terrorists. How did that become a platform plank? Is it cognitive dissonance - like, "I never would've voted for a war criminal, so torture must not be that bad"? Even if I agreed with everything else Romney stood for, I couldn't vote for him because he's said that we would torture POWs under his leadership.
