The OP's situation is much less likely to occur here in the UK simply because guns have been so heavily controlled. Yes, the criminal element has them but in tiny numbers when compared to the US. I would imagine the chances of a burglar carrying a gun are minimal here - if they have guns, they're going to use them for something bigger and more profitable than self-defence in a break-in.

Nevertheless, I do agree that once an intruder is "on my turf" I should have the absolute freedom to deal with him as I choose. What would I have done in the OP's situation? Blown his face off.

In the meantime, I feel perfectly safe sleeping in my house without a firearm to hand.

the actual facts on the case are sketchy for me. however, i don't care whether the guys breaking in had guns or not, i don't care about this guys sanity either, the fact is is that these guys broke into his home. thet got what they deserved when being shot by the farmer.

the fact that one of them was able to sue for damages is just sick.

Actually, it's more of case of they wished she had shot him rather than having a situation where an armed man ran into someone else's home, where most likely the homeowners weren't armed.

What would I have done? He never would have uttered the word "shhh". If I was pointing a weapon at someone to start with I'd be intending to shoot them and in these circumstances I'd have just gone ahead and done so then let the cops sort it all out. I sure as heck would not have waited for him to decide whether he wanted to shoot me or not.

Insofar as the right to keep and bear arms, the statistics work against you. But that's not why that's in the constitution. The point is not to protect ourselves against robbers... it's to protect ourselves against the government and that I am very much in favor of.

I'm glad you're okay. Your op was not altogether clear but if you have a pet door, you effectively aren't locking the doors to your home. You might as well leave the front door open as have a pet door that any thin person can enter through.

They make pet doors that require the pet's collar to have a RF chip in it, without reading the correct code you can't get the door to open.

I suggest you upgrade to that.

Pesonaly you did every thing right but turn on the first light . Few people would have been that smart as to use the wall and slowly eneter the room . I have friends who ask why I have a shotgun . Simple . Even if I don't hit my target full on I will leave enough pellets in him to make him remember me .

I am very pleased you are all right, Ma'am. And I do hope you will stroke your brave little Weenie for me. Y'know. Until it's enough. But I have something to add to the discussion which I hope you will pause to consider.

Had the gent you were so nice to not been fully aware of several alert cops a hundred yards away looking for HIM... he would have shot you dead. In the time it takes to say, 'SHIT!'.

You must not use this incident as a model to predict a future criminals actions. This guy had a good reason not to shoot you. That won't be true next time. If you will please consider that REACTION TIME cannot be reduced below about a third of a second, it is not really a practical plan to wait and see if he means to shoot. The metric is, CAN HE SHOOT. Unfair? Why is a man in your house unannounced with a gun in his hand. No, I didn't forget the question mark.

A second thought I'd like to float is, being a hunter, as I recall, you are aware of the method of moving a bit very lightly and then waiting a while. Watching. Listening. Then moving a bit very lightly and so on. If you are looking for someones cat or a burglar, this could make sense.

A third thought is, before trading in your trusty Snub Magnum for an auto with less punch but more parts, shoot a milk jug filled with water. Afterwards, consider that a set of laser grips would make every shot count. And is as intimidating as anything going. Reminder ; the difference is, a revolver takes one hand to deal with a misfire. Pull the trigger, again. Click, BOOM!. Just that fast.

Which is not to say I don't admire the way you handle yourself.

Kick ass, Duskypearls! I absolutely love to hear stories such as yours where the law abiding citizens have the weapon and are able to deter the criminals and save innocent lives. I commend you. I've taken the gun safety course but, alas, my town does not authorize a concealed weapon permit.

See - this is why pets are a great idea - they alert you to all manner of badness, and things-you-need-to-know. My guys tell me when really bad men are at the door - like my sweetie and the UPS man.

and if a bad man for real came around the baying of the hounds of hell would probably convince him that next door would be a better target.

Agreed. I've got cats and when I walk in the door, I always look at them to see how they're acting. If they act like they don't give a shit that I've just walked in the door, then all is right.

Dusky, what an incredible story. I'm so happy you are safe. If it were me and I had a gun in my hand like you did, I probably would have done the same thing.

My first thought would likely be to get him out of my house, not to hurt him. I think I've got it in me to flee from danger, not provoke it, so I would have probably concentrated on just getting the danger away from me rather than starting a possible gunfight.

It ended with nobody hurt in your living room and you walking away unharmed. I'd say you did very, very well.

First thought is gratitude to the gods & goddess that you are all right. Experienced similar when a child & was so greatful we had weapons.
As I am getting ready to renew weapons training my answer would be...you have a gun for this reason, he aimed at you...you should have fired.
That being the lesson I was trained from a young age "don't have a gun if you won't fire it & don't draw unless you plan to kill someone". Its logical & tough...till you find yourself in this situation!
While the healer side understands the consequences of killing another, it would have been too easy for him to have killed you & taken your gun to hurt others. Shoot first & worry about the mess later. He is now out there with the skill set to get back in your home, knowing where he can get a gun. Security & light upgrade is needed. Know better than to explain to cat person that this is exactly the situation a dog is for...my dobie is stupid as the day is long but would give his life to give me a 2 second head start escaping a bad situation

Some people have mentioned a preference for a shotgun. I would consider maneuverability to be an issue with a long gun inside the house. However, Tromix Lead Delivery Systems has some very nice Saiga mods. For example, this 8" barrel folding-stock 12ga:

When I lived on the 6th floor of a walk-up, a friend of mine realized he'd left something behind just as we hit the landing of the first floor. Being no fool I gave him my keys, wished him well, and sat down on the stoop to wait. It was a long wait, and it got to be too long. Finally I headed back up the stairs to see what the fuck.

As I topped the 6th floor landing, the first thing I noticed was that my apartment door was wide open. Just as I was edging around for a look, I heard a blood-curdling growl. My friend was standing a few feet inside, frozen stiff and sweating bullets, afraid to move, said attitude being heartily encouraged by a crouching 18-pound Maine Coon Cat with it's hair standing up and its fangs bared.

Smoke got a treat, and my friend declined ever to visit me again as long as he lived.
