Regardless of the (utterly useless) history lesson, any language, complete with its semantics, grammar and punctuation, evolves as time goes by. Whatever has happened in the past and whatever rules they decided to use or adopt in those days may well form part of today's modern structure of a language. But, at any given point in time, the language will have its definitions on how it should be written (and pronounced) and a general guide on structure and form. That said, the respectfulness (or otherwise) of D/s dynamics may also form a subset or slightly different emphasis on some aspects of the language such as treatment of pronouns. But that does not detract from what should be written properly - whether it is on a forum such as this or anywhere else for that matter. It is respect for said language and showing that you have that respect and have a reasonable command of it. To not show that respect, even more so if it is your mother tongue, is just sheer laziness and tardiness and to some degree a lack of intelligence or education. Whilst I do not advocate a writing style that is exam-perfect, I would certainly expect to see some reasonable effort put into anything written - be it forum posts, blogs, or whatever. We all make typos (god forbid, I'm not perfect by any means) and most people will make allowances for those. But things like proper capitalisation, punctuation and grammar can easilly be misconstrued and project an entirely different meaning if not written correctly. Case in point and nicely illustrated by urbancupcake's main profile picture - With the Oxford comma: We invited the strippers, jfk, and stalin (shows a pic of female strippers and two gentlemen). Without the Oxford comma: We invited the strippers, jfk and stalin (shows a pic of two guys in drag only - no females). Personally, I get very annoyed when people use the wrong word - like 'to' instead of 'too', brought/bought, bare/bear, board/bored, their/there etc. I also get peeved at lower case 'i' or where apostrophes are just missed out completely as in 'im', 'cant'. There are also many cases where they use a completely wrong word such as 'wont' instead of want (or should it have been won't??) - sometimes I have to re-read the sentence again to see what the writer was actually trying to say. Then there are blatant holes in basic language education such as using 'peek' or 'peak' instead of 'pique' or 'sence' rather than 'sense'; or 'carnt', 'intrest' etc! And text speak really drives me up the wall!! Another thing that really puts me off is a wall of text, usually with little or no punctuation and bad spelling and/or grammar. Then of course you get those ignoramouses (or should that be ignorami??) that CANT TYPE UNLESS ITS IN ALL CAPS AND DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE GET ANNOYED AT IT! Sheeesh. What IS the world coming to?? It is basic English (or American) education that kids of 6 or 7 learn at school - there just isn't any need for such sloppiness. Lets face it, if you cannot show that you are somewhat articulate, competent, have some sort of education and take a little pride in doing something so simple and basic as writing a few words, what else are you going to be sloppy, tardy, lazy {insert other appropriate words here} at doing?? It certainly doesn't show the writer in any sort of good light at all. It's not a case of using big words or convoluted sentences - even someone with severe dyslexia can show that they have put some effort into what they type. If you are going to write something, at least try to make it presentable and readable. Some of the profiles (and not just on CM) are appalling. Anything presented like that wouldn't get you a job as a road sweeper let alone anything more demanding than that. I was brought up 'old school' as someone put it - if a job is worth doing it's worth doing properly or not at all. [/EndRant]
