Status: offline 		Yes, our favorite bone of contention is also making the most of this tragedy.

Hackers target Westboro Baptist Church after Newtown threat

After church leaders announce plans to protest at site of school massacre, Anonymous posts the personal information for dozens of members of the extremist group, including names, e-mail addresses, and phone numbers.

That is so not their normal way of sending out a message.

And the site is down.

So... we all know Westboro is full of assholes. But they are exercising their freedoms.

Is Anonymous in right here? Is it ok to silence a group because we dont like what they have to say?

1) Members of the westboro church are rendered incapable of reproduction.
2) Children of Westboro members are removed and placed in foster care with sane families and sent to deprogramers until the idiocy of their parents is gone.
3) Stick the adult members of this church in a warehouse with one bathroom, no toilet paper and no ventalation and feed em nothing but taco bell and laxatives.

On the topic of the op, can we not use the Intelligence Agencies of this country to track these individuals down and give them a medal and a large sum of money?
Maybe pay for a weeks services with a $20,000 call girl, or guy as the case may be?
Give em a government job they can never be fired from?
Beach front homes on the beach of their choosing?
Exempt them from taxes for life?

We got to reward them somehow.

Depends. I am assuming they paid for the domain they use. And that is a form of speech.

Status: offline 		If I were to publically reveal the membership list of a local Shriners group or a Masonic Temple, would that somehow prevent them from organizing fundraisers for the local children’s hospital?

The group Anonymous can reasonably argue that they are exercising their own 1st Amendment rights by revealing the data about various members of Westboro Baptist.

Further, if the members of Westboro Baptist truly believe in what they are preaching and believing, they should be proud to let everyone know their addresses, phones numbers, e-mail addresses, etc. They should put bumper stickers on their cars and signs on their front lawns announcing their membership. If they are so weak in the faith/belief that they must hide their membership, maybe they should find another religious group. As long as their group is not committing crimes, why do they need to hide their membership?

Publically revealing this information does not prevent the members of Westboro Baptist from exercising their 1st Amendment right to be assholes.

That would all depend on if the information was public before Anonymous posts it. It may not have been located all in one source before, but if it's public information, did Anonymous do anything wrong? The link you showed didn't include the personal info dissemination post, so I have no idea if there was a call for action against the members, or some other illegal action. Even the video posted wasn't a threat to any individual, but to the organization. I guess the real question is, did they do anything illegal, or did Anonymous use their right to free speech, too?

As far as Westboro's site being down, can it be proven that it was Anonymous?

I'm not supporting the actions, possible actions, or message of Anonymous. I'm also not supporting Westboro Baptist.

I just cant help but wonder, after reading this, does it make it ok because so many agree with what Anonymous has done?

For any future posts on this thread....

I am not talking about Anonymous releasing any information.. Im sure much of its available through public records.

But, if we are truly in favor of free speech, can we truly support the actions of Anonymous?

If they don't have the balls to walk the walk as well as talk the talk if people know who they are and they can't rely on protection provided by the police while disrupting a stranger's funeral, then fuck the gutless little shits.
(As for the other issue you raise: hasn't publicly outing people as gays in a bid to get them fired or beaten up long been a tactic for the religious right?)

If Westboro Baptist has a right to free speech, then a large group of bikers and outraged citizens surely has the right to get between them and a funeral.

It's hard, this free speech. But we've determined that it does not impede free speech to keep distance between that free speech and other people's right to freely assemble. So let them scream and wave their pathetic signs, but at a distance. Ten miles would be my choice, but a distance that would at least mute their ridiculous noise.

In truth though I just can't,at this point,bring myself to give a shit.
Perhaps it would have been better to let Westboro follow thru on their threat...and let them suffer the backlash of an angry nation after having done so.

Status: offline 		Hacking isn't free speech, it's a criminal act. So while we can't condone hacking, I certainly have no problem with publishing the information of individuals who choose to make themselves public --VERY public-- figures.

How has Anonymous limited Westboro's free speech? Unless there is something criminal in Anonymous's actions, the case can be made that this is simply Anonymous exercising free speech.

Can it be proven that Anonymous was behind the site being down? If not, how can Anonymous be held liable? If it can, then that can not be supported.
