57% of Americans now say gun control laws should be made more strict, up from 39% in April.Support for stricter laws is now higher than in a CBS News Poll conducted after the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in January 2011. 47% backed stricter gun laws then, butthat figure dropped off in polling conducted about a year after the incident. While more than half want tighter gun laws, three in 10 think laws covering guns should be keptas they are. Only 9% think gun laws should be less strict

http://www.scribd.com/doc/117172535/CBS-News-Poll-Gun-Laws

This seems to be an on going trend among all polls.

CNN/ORC Poll. Dec. 17-18, 2012. N=620 adults nationwide. Margin of error ± 4.

"A ban on the manufacture, sale and possession of semi-automatic assault guns, such as the AK-47"

12/17-18/12 Favor 62 Oppose 37 Unsure 1

8/7-8/12 Favor 57 Oppose 42 Unsure 1

ABC News/Washington Post Poll.

This one is what I expected. Favoring in regards to the question...

"Would you support or oppose a law requiring a nationwide ban on semi-automatic handguns, which automatically re-load every time the trigger is pulled?"

While opposing...

"Would you support or oppose a law requiring a nationwide ban on the sale of handguns, except to law enforcement officers?"

Supporting...

"Would you support or oppose a law requiring a nationwide ban on high-capacity ammunition clips, meaning those containing more than 10 bullets?"

http://www.pollingreport.com/guns.htm

So tell me again how people want to permanently ban all weapons?

ummm.. if so many Americans are wanting stricter gun control.. why are so many people running out to buy guns (since the CT shooting)? could it be that they just want strict gun control on the other guy?

i shall not vote in this poll as i am not American..

I saw a blurb about guns being a popular gift this year for Christmas.. I find that so strange.. and a bit of a contradiction.. ya know, good will towards others and all that..

I would support the ban of assault weapons. I don't see anything wrong with hunting rifles or ordinary handguns. But with that said, I don't think the ban of assault weapons will stop violent crimes or even illegal gun use. Nor do I think an actual ban on assault weapons will actually keep them out of the country.

A couple of months ago, a few friends and myself downloaded the plans for a rail gun and built one. Not very practical but it did breaks some cinder blocks.

When was the last time a "criminal/gang banger" went into a school and killed?

Criminals (gangs or drugs) don't lose it and wind up going to schools to commit mass killings, I agree with you there. But it frequently happens that the mentally ill go to schools to kill, and IMO, choose a gun as the instrument to bring all the innocents into their hell with them. I feel like banning rifles and handguns deny responsible people the right to own and use them and is a cop-out to actually recognize and effectively treat people with mental health issues.

But those are just my thoughts on the matter.

Why is it that if the polls show majority support for gun control it is a good thing and the majority rules.

However according to one poster when informed the American majority supports a ban on Abortions, they responded to effect that the majority dont have shit to say about it.

I agree. Which is why I think many here dont agree with banning handguns or rifles. Assault weapons is a whole other story.

Because guns are used by both sexes... and affect both sexes.

Abortions, regardless of how you may view it, is about the woman and her physician.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/1576/abortion.aspx

Only one of many polls about how women feel regarding abortions.

Thats the same link I gave you.

And the polls clearly show that the majority want to allow abortions with limitations.

Your link doesn't show the majority of Americans think abortion should be illegal in all circumstances - that number is 22 - 34 %.

48 - 53 % think it should be legal only under certain circumstances. Wanting to impose restrictions /= support of a ban.

To me it shows the government propaganda is working. The recent shooting was "just as doctor ordered". Old man puts it correctly: you can not have the police state where the citizens are armed.

Yeah? Pity nobody told the Indians that, then. The border with Afghanistan doesn't look much like a police state however many paramilitaries they throw at it.
