They would if they could. But that path would eventually lead to revolution.

By what means?

And Merry Christmas to you too, Polite.

Not that at all, I am just sick and tired of people from countries where they have a shit load of their own problems telling us how to fix ours. I mean your nationalized health care is bankrupting the government so it is being scaled back.

Anyone from anywhere can participate in any thread. Please return to the topic.

However (and this is a FR) there have been a number of personal attacks on this thread, which is not allowed. I am hoping to not have to issue gags for Christmas.

Can anybody tell me why a thread about gun control in the USA is being so dominated by a bunch of people who aren't from the USA? Or why people who live under the protections and guarantees of the US Constitution are wasting a moment giving them the satisfaction of a response to their sideline heckling?x

OK, more serious answer now:

From my point of view, it makes a lot of sense to compare and contrast the ways in which different countries do things. Most peoples of most countries, most of the time, don't think outside of their own countries. They cannot see how different things can be, yet still work - and work well, too. They don't think 'outside of the box', in a very important sense.

When all the silly prejudices and jokes about Americans by non-American English speakers, one less-than-complimentary view of them remains. This is that Americans are insular. Beyond even the British (and we're aware that we have a reputation for this). What works in American society just must work elsewhere, too; what doesn't work, can't work anywhere else, either. What tiny percentage is it of Americans that even owns a passport? How many could name the political leader of any other country in the world?

Thus any conversation about guns and gun ownership in the USA, in America, looks stilted to the point of weird to non-Americans. In the global context, you all are *weird*. Everything you say about guns looks extreme from our point of view. My father (who's snoring on my sofa as I write) an ex London policeman and very, very right wing, spent the morning ranting about the surfeit of guns in the USA. We don't have a culture of guns that's remotely similar.

I'm willing to compromise. We'll give up our guns as they have. I won't deny that this will lower gun related deaths. In return, we get saved from their healthcare system model - where we are clearly heading.

I'm not. Hecklers don't get a veto.

I'm wondering if the reason the anti-gun position is being led from abroad is because the thinking Americans are moving beyond the knee-jerk reaction to the horror of Sandy Hook, and remembering the vital role all those guns play in the maintenance of a free state.

A convicted killer, who shot dead two firefighters with a BUSHMASTER ASSAULT RIFLE after leading them into an ambush when they responded to a house fire he set in Western New York, left behind a typewritten note saying HE WANTED TO "DO WHAT I LIKE DOING BEST, KILLING PEOPLE," police said.

William Spengler, 62, set his home and a car on fire early Monday morning WITH THE INTENTION OF SETTING A TRAP TO KILL FIREFIGHTERS AND TO SEE "HOW MUCH OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD I CAN BURN DOWN," according to the note he wrote and which police found at the scene. The note did not give a reason for his actions.

Spengler, who served 18 years in prison for beating his 92-year-old grandmother to death with a hammer in 1981, hid Monday morning in a small ditch beside a tree overlooking the sleepy lakeside street in Webster, N.Y., where he lived with his sister, police said today in a news conference.

That woman, Cheryl Spengler, 67, remains missing and may also have been killed, police said.

As firefighters arrived on the scene after a 5:30 a.m. 911 call on the morning of Christmas Eve, Spengler opened fire on them with THE BUSHMASTER, THE SAME SEMI-AUTOMATIC, MILITARY-STYLE WEAPON USED IN THE DEC. 14 RAMPAGE KILLING OF 20 CHILDREN IN NEWTOWN, CONN.

ABC-News

While using his Bushmaster to kill the firefighters, I wonder if he felt "manly", like the manufacturer said he would in their advertisements?

had he been put to death for beating his momma to death back in 1981, he could not have murdered those firefighters.

First off,it's not an anti-gun position, that is as disingenenuous as positing that someone holds a "pro-abortion" position.
No one is positing that guns be confiscated(no one with a serious position)what folks are calling for,and American folks to boot,is serious comprehensive gun regulation.
If you can not see the need for such legislation, following the Sandy Hook tragedy ,than I suggest you are experiencing a knee jerk defense of the Second, despite the fact that it is not in fact being attacked.

you needto see the position of Charles Schumer (Sen NY) and others before stating that the 2nd is not under attack
