ORIGINAL: jlf1961 Maybe you should read the quote I posted by Thomas Jefferson. The truth of the matter is that the threat to the citizens of the United States is none other than the government of the United States. Since 9/11 the government has slowly eroded, limited or circumvented basic principles of law. Two separate and independent secret court systems exist in addition to the established state and federal courts. Both courts can issue search warrants that can be acted on without notifying the subject of the warrant. One deals with terrorism one deals with drugs. Prior to that laws were passed by congress and signed by the president that allows for the confiscation of property or money without due process. Mao said political power rests in gun ownership. Once the government starts eliminating the bill of rights, then this country is no longer of the people. Actually the government belongs to big business, not the people. To me, a quote from someone not even born in the same century I was (and I'm pretty old) has no relevance on today's world. I've asked before; you seriously think the obscenely high rates of death-by-gun in the US of its own citizens by its own citizens is what your forefathers had in mind when the 2nd amendment was framed? Or that having virtually everyone armed to the teeth makes for a safer neighbourhood? As a shooter myself, it just boggles my mind what anyone needs 12 guns for - and a thousand rounds per, ta boot...! Anyway, treat the above as rhetorical since everyone else conveniently ignores the hard questions.... Judging solely from what I've seen on American movies and TV shows, your country does have an astonishingly high number of law enforcement agencies. Is it just hollywood or does the friggin' Navy really have its own, too - NCIS??? (I call it the Mark Harmon ego stroke, what with all the maso-submissives under his command) But I digress.... I'm not surprised that 9/11 happened even though collectively, they had everything necessary to stop it. But human jealousies and pettiness being what it is (agencies not sharing intel etc), I guess disaster was inevitable and that consequently, the average US citizen has a case for not trusting them or the government that institutes them. In Oz, we've got a whole 2. Each state is responsible for maintaining its own police force. In rural areas, there is no popular election of the local police chief etc - all police are recruited, trained and appointed by the state. And then there's the Federal Police (AFP), who deal with anything that crosses borders or otherwise in the national interest, including deployments to foreign trouble spots like East Timor or the Solomons. I think your claims that the entire Bill of Rights is under threat is just an utter scare-mongering nonsense. You don't throw a whole car away because the windscreen cracks. You fix what's broken and the 2nd amendment is "broken" (irrelevant) - has been for over a century now. The "wild west" is over (or it should be); the British are not coming, and neither is anyone else. Frankly, the champs for occupying other soverign nations is the US - by a long way. You've got too much that needs fixing in your own back yard. But no will to do it.... So cheer up, Obama or Congress or whoever responsible won't touch the 2nd amendment. All politicians are "pigs at the (public) trough" and they're not gonna risk their perks from the public purse just for doing what's needed and what's *right*. Focus.
