Thank you both. I just dont see how tapping incomes over 100k ends up with a deficit....

SS is paid on earned income now.... but starting 2013, its also paid on unearned income. 3.8%. Or did that go by the way side with the "fiscal cliff" settlement?

Totally depends on what you're defining as "the community." Does Boeing depend on the Everett, WA community to purchase their 747's?

"Corporations are people too, my friend." Oh, who said that?

Corporations know the value of being a good member of the community. Boeing's community is the Nation from which it draws tax breaks, workers, parts, and goodwill. They must like it here. They haven't moved away.

Smart management enhances the brand by accepting responsibility and being an active part of the community. They also realize if the consumer is strapped their business will suffer. Boeing depends upon air travel consumers and on Federally maintained flight control system. Not so independent as one might think.

Hell a lot of taxes could be raised by closing the tax loopholes for corporations.

Helluva lot of tax revenues could be raised by closing *all* tax loopholes. Period.

oh yeah... one big fat tax loophole is the mortgage interest deduction on residences... try taking that away and watch them squeal and squack.. [8D]

carried interest is larger.   but nevertheless, mortgage interest going away will reduce rental development, business, and home ownership, as well as the price of homes will dump considerably further.

Meh.

Meh.

no it wont.. for a business & landlord it would remain a business expense..

and it would not reduce home ownership to any great degree either.. in Canada there is no mortgage interest deduction on residences and that doesnt stop anyone that wants to own a house from buying one.. people buy a home for other reasons, imo, the deduction is just the cherry on top and it doesnt need to exist..

Apparently, you think it was me that said that.

And, you're correct that Corporations know the value of being good community members, which is why they help fund "feel-good" projects, regardless of how worthwhile and/or necessary that project is. And, they tend to pay their legally required tax amounts (there are some that shirk this duty). But, Boeing's Everett WA community isn't as likely directly consume their products made there (as opposed to a GM/Ford/Fiat plant).

There is the US Federal budget. Tell me.... how would you determine what to cut and why?

Everything, by exactly the percentage we're over budget.

Every year.
