Damn, do the lies never stop?

Maybe lying to all those nosy survey-takers just becomes an overall habit? [:)]

That and paranoia I suspect...It reeks of it

You would think that gun owners, with the cherished ability to defend themselves, would be less paranoid than the rest of us, but that's not the impression I'm getting.

Hmmm lets see... The NYT calls and asks people if they own or bought any guns recently... Now perhaps it's just my Midwest mindset, or 15% decline can be attributed to the Californication of the Western states, but I seriously doubt that ANY gun owner would answer the NYT truthfully... I know I wouldn't, in fact I lost all my guns in a tragic boating accident.

And yet the survey flies in the face of the fact that gun sales are way up.
You also have to concider the source, the NYT are about as opened minded on this subject as the NRA

I clearly shouldn't have expected folks to click and read. The NYT didn't conduct the survey. The data came from the General Social Survey, conducted every two years by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. (I'm sure we'll soon hear that the GSS can't be trusted because it's conducted by researchers in Obama's adopted home town.)

The article also notes, "Gallup, which asks a similar question but has a different survey design, shows a higher ownership rate and a more moderate decrease."

Rob: I'm intrigued by your assertion that gun owners, often touted as honest, law-abiding folk, are actually all liars. Does that dive into dishonesty stem from fear that a survey taker plans to report them to Big Brother? Are gun owners really that paranoid? That would seem to underscore the importance of mental health safeguards for gun purchases.

Bama: Your suggestion to "consider the source" brought two questions to mind:

(a) What's your source for the claim that "gun sales are way up"?

(b) How do you think the NYT's purported bias affected the story? Are you saying they made up false results? Or do you think they just didn't understand the data? How do you think they got Gallup to play along in its own independent survey?

Thank you for leting us know that Gallup got simular results though not as drastic as NYT. As pointed out the results can be altered greatly by where the poll is taken.

My source is only the Department of Justice, As you know they track guns sales, aproximatley, through background checks which have been at record numbers the last few years.

And yes if someone called me on the phone and asked if I owned a gun, I would tell them no because it is none of their business just like it is none of my doctor's business even though my kidney doctor and I belong to the same private range.

Why the need to lie? Why not just decline to answer the question? Or say "It's none of your business"?

That was what I said I would do.
This most likely has more an effect on the results than lying.

It is for a NY newspaper maybe people were afraid they were going to post a nationwide map of the adresses of all gun owners, nah no NY newspaper would do a thing like that.

You missed the key point I posted above.

The NYT didn't conduct the survey. The data came from the General Social Survey, conducted every two years by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. (I'm sure we'll soon hear that the GSS can't be trusted because it's conducted by researchers in Obama's adopted home town.)

Your map-in-a-NY-newspaper theory would require an impressive mix of paranoia and delusion to believe. It's worrying that posters seem to want to demonstrate the tendency of those traits to overlap with gun ownership. I'm starting to wonder if medical researchers and clinicians should explore the possibility of using the desire to purchase a gun as a diagnostic tool for finding disturbed individuals.

I'm still curious as to how you think the NYT affected the results, particularly when it didn't conduct the survey.

I never said they did, when I made that comment I didn't knowthey had contracted it out.
All I said is that they are as objective on this issue as the NRA.
A recent newspaper supported poll statled that an overwhelming number of people supported all gun control proprosels out there, it turned out they only polled in the Northeast.

TricklessMagic -> RE: gun control and tragedies (3/12/2013 8:33:06 PM)

I threw in the bit about the doctor as an aside. It was to make the point, yes I would lie to my doctor about whether or not I own firearms. Maybe that's paranoid and oh well if it seems that way. Folks before 94' thought it was paranoid to believe Slick Willy was going to ban what has been defined as assault weapons, based on aesethic features. Folks in New York were thought to be paranoid for thinking the Democrats would try and strip away more of their rights, and then the Safe Act was passed and somehow the magic number for rounds in a magazine dropped from ten to seven and no allowing for purchases of Pre-Ban mags. I could go on and on, and I might in a later post. But when it comes to being paranoid about guns, it doesn't seem like the labeled paranoid are all too wrong all too often. In fact they seem to be getting more right as time passes oddly enough.

So yes I will lie to Democrats, Europeans, Liberals, Progressives, Nazis, Communists, and Hippies because telling them the truth don't seem to be all that beneficial. Seems like the more you give them, the more you "compromise" as they like to define it, the less you get almost like Chamberlin with Hitler. Give up all you can till they can take the rest for themselves. So if I think lying will benefit my side, yes I'll do it, God knows I've seen the likes of Jesse Jackson, Mayor Bloomberg, etc. etc. etc. lie to the public (they're either liars or fools).

Gun shops face massive ammunition shortage

"We can't get any inventory within a 100-mile radius," said Mark Campbell, owner of Mid America Arms in St. Louis. He's having a hard time keeping ammo in stock. "It started right around the election, as soon as President Obama mentioned gun control. But right after the school shooting in [Newtown] Connecticut, that's when it went crazy."

Even the big ammunition retailers are feeling the pinch. Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500) has been rationing its ammo since January, to three boxes per customer per day. And when a gun retailer like Cabela's (CAB) gets two or three shrink-wrapped pallets of 5.56 mm or .223 ammunition for AR-15 assault rifles, they're "cleaned off like locusts, within a couple of hours," according to Brian Rafn, a research director at Morgan Dempsey Capital Management in Milwaukee who follows ammo manufacturers.

"You're talking about a massive civilian arsenal build up," he added.

Hell, yeah.

Are you sure you aren't rushing to judgement here dcnovice?

I mean ...having to adjust from a secure comforting ten bullets in a magazine to a measly wimpy seven ...... we're talking serious heavy-duty emotionally charged life-changing adjustment issues here, not to mention all the lifestyle alterations, therapists fees, medication costs ....... not something any sane person would look forward to is it? And no Pre-Ban mags either! How humiliating!

I mean ..... it's not something I'd look forward to undertaking on my own - not sure I'd survive the process.[:o] I'm sure you can understand why a person might be on the edge afterwards ........ their judgement just a tad skewed .....

So perhaps a slightly more compassionate perspective might be worth considering ...........

I think it is time we do something about these tragedies, and I think the only way we can truly prevent them is with sensible legislation.

Relax, go back to sleep. Its ok. YOU need your guns. All of them and ever type of gun there is...plus any other type of magazine for those guns. They should be modified anyway that you desire them for "best" affect. Yeah, thats what you should do and then thousands more will die this year and next year and the year after that. Who knows maybe 50 kids will be slaughtered next time.......and again you will cry and wring your hands and at the end of the day say....Hey I need MY GUNS.......

PS - might want to wash the blood of those kids in newtown off your hands...

That is pretty much it.

My question is...how do you change a diaper with a GUN? I'm trying to figure that one out.
