Although putting up a fake picture is decieving, that's the last thing I'd worry about as far as people on here. So many times we've contacted people after reading thier profiles and discovered  later on that what they want and what they say they want are two different things. Some can be attributed to being new, others are just game players..just like in real life.Pulling the weeds that surround flowers is a tedious but required job..Hang in there.

I've discovered that there aren't any "real" or otherwise people close enough for me to meet on here, so, I have been meeting in real life instead of here....I just use CM for the forums.

Yah, Level they are bogus.  The goal is to get you to click through.  When you do, CollarMe gets a small amount of dough -- but small amounts from 1000s of clicks = a fairly good amount.  This is a recent addition to CM, you probably note.  I'm torn -- I hate spam and ads, yet I understand the need to fund this site as those of us who use it don't pay a dime for it.

E.

Yep, E, I don't even have much tolerance to spam fried and on whole wheat lol, but for the ads, I've noticed some posting that they click on them just to give CollarMe a little boost, and that may be a decent idea. I know I appreciate the site, and would be unhappy if it went belly up.

The ones with one picture of a very young and attractive woman, often have only one picture and talk about wanting old men to use them as sex slaves...they are either men or porn sites.

The ones only into chat and requiring a picture are guys getting wanking material.

im real ... although i have had plenty of people tell me im not ... usually, if i am questionned, i offer the options of my webcam or a telephone call .... that usually clears up the situation ... i cant prove myself any more than that lol until a r/t meeting.

Does anyone have any tricks or rules of thumb for identifying "real" people on collarme as opposed to stock photos of models that lead back to spammers and links to porn websites?

I have a fool-proof method.

It's called meet face to face in real life.

seme,
The answer to the question to initiate this post is simple and basic. Assuming you are looking for "real people" because you want to initiate a relationship; limit your search to people in your area or at least in an area accessible to you. Contact them via this site, communicate via all available media but don't 'play'. Establish a rule to meet in person ASAP. During my search my personal rule was to meet or at minimum schedule to meet within 2 weeks.

But in your case according to your profile you aren't looking for a relationship. You are looking for someone to cheat. From your profile:
quote:

I'm a very successful professional attached to a vanilla. I'm looking for a kindred spirit for friendship, fun, and maybe some harmless play which may lead to more over time. I'm all about discretion, safety, and trust. I'm not really into the scene at all and have no interest in mind games or control.

Everyone has different definitions as to what is "real" and what is not. To people looking for LTR you are not real. I guess something can be said for being "honest" about lying to your partner. Wonder, if it's "harmless play" why does it have to be discreet? Other than heartbreak and disappointment for either your current "vanilla" or your new found partner, what "more" can it lead to "over time"?

seemeinyourdreams,

I don't believe that there are any hard and fast rules which could help you determine the authenticity of an ad or profile.  Your ability to read between the lines and to discern between honest and dishonest profiles and photos can only be learned through experience.  On the other hand, most of us can tell the difference between a professionally-photographed image and one which an amateur photographer has taken.

Most people who advertise want a personal letter with more than a few one-liners, but when you do take the time and effort to write a personalized letter and then receive no reply, it can be very discouraging.

Good luck!

Fakes usually do not take effort in their profiles or messages. So if you are mass mailing people or unsolicited messages if the corresponding profiles are short or ultra provacative and/or the message is totally generic then if finding out that people contacting you are a fake bugs you, I would suggest being more selective in who you write and answer.

Be patient and selective and this will eliminate most of the "fakes".

Before, when I was single and looking, if a dom showed an interest and that interest was not returned in the same fashion as it was shown, sometimes they would lash out and call me a "fake". I was not a "fake" just because I wasn't interested in that particular dom. But I think it made them feel better to call me names which reminded me very much of being in grade school. Also, my profile is brief for a reason. I enjoy reading other peoples profiles and looking around at different perspectives but only have a mild interest in taking it to the level of more than that. Does that make me fake or just curious and a little voyeristic? I think a lot of people are here for many different reasons and to think anyone has the right or is just that much smarter than the rest of us to decide who is a "fake" and who is not, is making general assumptions about people they no very little about, if anything at all.

i am real... i've found that some don't know themselves for real and when their profile says one thing and later they say something else. they are unsure of what they really want.  example... one dom was a very self assured person in his profile of what he wanted and needed, when i talked to him on the phone, he had never experienced Ds before and was just putting things in his profile that he had read in other's profiles.  i give him credit for researching however his efforts may have been better directed towards learning about Ds rather than copying profiles!

Well I have to admit to having mixed luck with Collarme, but I don't think any site is foolproof. While I think I have a good picture on My profile I find it gathers alot of the wrong type of attention ( as in not what I'm looking for). While sometimes this is amusing or flattering I find it very easy to ignore those I feel don't meet My basic requirements for intelligent conversation.
I agree that real life meeting is the best way to find "real" friends. I also have found that the offer of meeting casually early in an acquaintence an excellent way to weed the player( as in online only/ fantasy spinner) from the potential partner.
I did come into initial contact with My boy on this site, so there are real people out there. We've been together going on 7 months now.

If I'm not real, then I'm only a figment of my imagination......or is it your imagination?  Because if I'm not real, I don't exist and you are only imagining that the person writing this is real.  But then you are only imagining this writing as well.  If you get down to it, you only know YOU are real. (Thank you Decartes)

I'm Dominant so my tactics are different from the ones subs can use.

But a generic method would be to talk about vanilla things as long as you need to get a good feeling. Fakes will lose interest very fast.

Only 00.01% opf CM membership is "Real Deal People"! The other 99.99% of the membership are a mix of CIA and Home Land Security who are here to see what you are doing in your bedroom and if that is a Wire Guided Vibrator or an Exploding Dildo you are playing with or if you are an Urbane Terrorist torturing some innocent All American boy or girl and attempting to pervert them from continuing to follow the party line. Be carefull. Be very carefull during football season for MY agents will be active subverting all those who do not passionately follow Dallas Cowboys. We are working in feeding all those who do not free diahorear causing hot dogs...........Mwhhhhhaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahahah.

Fabulous idea, Ms Jude.

Yeah, when I'm on the home page just now there are a bunch of pictures of women who definitely do not live in my area...

All of those ads are bogus, as you seem to have found out.

Are you saying my ad is bogus because I ask someone to prove they read it or are you referring to the pain in the butt ads on the sides here
