I assumed, since it really wasn't explain in the OP, that the adult son would not have been available to do whatever needed done. Example, working. Because if I had an adult child living with me, they would be working and paying to live with me.

If that was the case the date could have been easily scheduled around the son's availability, or on a weekend... something tells me neither was possible.

Wow, LaTigresse. You are a very angry person who has impossible expectations from the world around you. I'll thank you not to judge me.

LOL

If that's what you're getting from what LaT's said, I suddenly ain't surprised anymore why your "radar" is guiding you towards the kind of d-types it apparently is.

We had a black lab for 13 years, and the last few years of her life we had to pick and choose when we could see family, go out, etc. because she was in poor health. On one hand, there was no question that we were going to take good care of her. On the other hand, it kind of sucked that we had to decide which family not to see at Christmas because we couldn't leave our dog.

This time around I got a small dog, so I can just take her with me :)

I love animals, and I do think pet ownership is a big responsibility. However, I have never put them on the same "level" as humans, so to speak.

You and LaTigresse are certainly entitled to believe and express whatever you wish. I, on the other hand, don't have to buy into it.

I know just what you're talking about. I had a beloved cat who had diabetes and needed insulin injections twice a day. That made being away from home difficult because she wouldn't let anyone but me come near her with a needle. When I traveled I had to board her at my vet because it took about three people to hold her down to inject her. Poor thing. :(

But, I didn't not travel because of her illness. And, I scheduled going out around her injections.

And with nobody having suggested any differently, at any point, it's curious you feel the need to be hostile and defensive about that fact...

Or else his son has issues. Some people...you just cannot count on them.

*****

smartsub10, my sister has dogs. Both were rescues with issues...one was so high strung that whenever there was thunder and lightning it would jump up on her bed, cowering, and would pee all over the bedding. Her husband's dog hated her for the first two years...and would let them know it by taking a dump on my sister's side of the bed. Another dog had a filthy temper and if my sister and her hubby were late coming home (went out to a restaurant and then a movie), it would rip up and shred magazines, newspapers, letters, napkins, and toilet paper, wreck shoes, curtains, bedding, chewed on couches, etc. It would act like a pissed off prima donna for hours after they got home too, lol.

When my cousin adopted a big puppy from the pound, in Ohio, they told her she needed a large dog cage, a "cave" for the animal to go into. My cousin has a huge dog now (puppy grew up) and it is cage trained. When she wants to go out for a date, she takes him for a walk first and then cages him. The cage is large, her dog is content to be there...and doesn't pace nor howl and raise hell.

I don't understand the problem...can't they get home and walk the dog, feed it, etc., then go out on a date? Learn to give it some "cave time"? Find a pet sitter? Surely some local teenager would watch tv with the dog while the dog's daddy goes out on a date, lol.

Bottom line, the men need to find a solution if they want to date.

My ex husband had a crazy cat that became part of our household when we moved in together. I mean vet-certified crazy. We were encouraged to put her down. This cat would wait in ambush to attack me and anyone who entered our home. I had to lock her up in a room when we had company. But, after about a year I won her over. She would snuggle up to me and greet me every morning in bed. She still hated every other human on the planet besides my husband and me but we loved her dearly. Years after we broke up he called me to tell me that she died. I burst into tears.

Not everything and every one we love is lovable.

While their lack of motivation is unsettling, you never know. I would have issues meeting people at certain times of the day. Not that my dogs are spoiled but my neighbors are assholes. If the clock strikes 8 and the dogs are out barking at passer-bys, they call the cops. While the cops officially can't do anything til 10, I still get a call from them saying they recieved complaints (which is just annoying, worse off I have no idea how the local pd ever got my cell #). I would certainly have to take time to go home and lock up the dogs before meeting someone. As far as schedule, dogs are creatures of habit, the closer you stick to a routine the better behaved and well mannered they are. Now, going out once on a date, shouldn't be an issue. Constantly changing things up on the dog could cause problems.

If this is a case where your neighbors have been listening to your dogs barking all day, and do so every day, I can hardly blame them.

funny, they don't work at home, and have their own dogs that wake me up when they put them out at 6am to go to work.....just assholes unaware of their narcissistic behavior. I once sat outside the house for an hour and monitored their barking. They didn't bark constantly, only when another person with a dog walkd by. Which added up to 5-10 minutes per hour of barking. If you have ever walked a dog through suburbia, every house that has a dog goes nuts when you walk by. Mine have at least learned you aren't allowed to bark while inside the home.

If the dogs aren't a problem barking all day, I agree they're unreasonable. I they are a problem barking all day, I understand your neighbors being upset.
I have no idea which is which in this case, but I must say that if I'd live next door to dogs that bark a solid 2 hours a day (12 x 10min) every day I'd be pretty pissed with the owners not teaching the dogs to behave.

Mine doesn't.
My next door neighbors dog doesn't.
I know of at least 6 other dogs on my street who don't.

Though we have one asshole on the block who has a Rottweiler he leaves out to bark whenever somebody walks by at all hours of the day and night. Nobody in the neighborhood can stand him, and I've heard most all the other dog owners bitch about how irresponsible he is not teaching his dog not to bark.

While I would never neglect my pets in favor of meeting someone new, or getting my kink on, I would make a better effort to meet w a prospective sub/slave than those fellas seem to have done for ypu.

I say, go with your gut. You're not wrong, *for you.* My read on that guy whose dogs would "freak out," is that he isn't the boss, in that house. When a dog exhibits so-called "separation anxiety," it's almost invariably that the dog hasn't given his humans permission to leave without him.

While Rottweiler boy should have his dog controled at night, I don't think you want your dog to never ever bark. That bark is an invaluable service. I have never seen a home security system half as effective as a dog at warning you of any potential danger.

So, considering that you're apparently one of those people who thinks it's okay for their dogs to provide continuous noise pollution, without trying to teach them otherwise, I'm not at all surprised your neighbors are annoyed.

If you live in suburbia, and want to teach a dog to bark as an alarm system, without continuously bothering your neighbors, you teach it to only bark when people come on the property (so barking at stuff on the sidewalk is off limits) and preferably, to only bark while the dog is inside (so it can alert you of intruders at night).

Allowing your dog to bark at every other person/dog that walks by negates its efficiency as a warning system, because it will teach you and the neighbors to ignore the dog's bark, which means that when you really need to know the dog is warning you about something relevant... nobody will be paying attention to it.

Hey, their dogs do the same things, just at different times of the day. You must have the best neighbors in the world if they thought something was wrong at your house if your dog is barking. Just like I am sure they call the cops if a car alarm goes off.

By train, do mean strapping an electrode to the dog so it is severly punished every time it yaps?

No, I mean teach the dog that you're the alpha, and it is to take your lead on which parts are group turf it is to defend, and which parts it is not allowed to defend... you know... control the dog and make it do what you expect instead of letting it do whatever it wants.

I don't use shock collars, and my German-sheppard mix is trained to stay in the backyard, without fencing on the side of the house and not bark at things on the sidewalk. I can be out on the front porch with her, and run inside to get something, leaving her there by herself, and she will stay on the porch. She also wouldn't bark (though she may quietly gruff) at a passerby as long as they stayed on the sidewalk. But if anybody sets foot on the driveway, she would immediately raise the alarm, so I would know something was up.

And yes, if my neighbors dogs would all of a sudden go berserk when they aren't home, I'd go check it out, because I KNOW that those dogs don't bark unless something is amiss. That's what happens when you teach a dog to only sound the alarm in case there is an actual problem... people register "dog is barking" = "something is up".
When a dog barks randomly at anything, they DO become car alarms and everybody starts to ignore them... because people are trained to know that 99% of the time a car alarm goes off... or a dog that barks at anything barks... it's a false alarm.

If you want your dog's bark to have value as a warning system, you need to teach the dog, to teach the people around it that the dog wont bark UNLESS there is a good reason for doing so.

My cocker is pretty good, but if you would like to take my wife's schipperke for a week by all means......... For the last three years I have been convinced he is mentally retarded. A shepard is a smart dog. If only that's what she had......... :)
