Yachtie -> Bloomberg tells women what to do... (3/25/2013 1:50:51 PM)

From the Washington Times -

Mr. Bloomberg’s remaining months in office have included a firestorm of regulations and policy pushes on wide range of issues. Aside from the soda size ban and a well-publicized call for tighter gun control, another contentious policy he pushed: Nudging hospitals to lock up baby formula to force mothers to breast-feed newborns.

I thought it was only Republicans who were hating on women?[8|] Oh, that's right. He once was. [8D]

It is time for this guy to get put in an "I love me" jacket and sent to a nice padded room.

Cmon guys, everyone know the Mayor of NYC knows what's best for Americans... He's a billionaire 1%er dontcha know.

quote:

"I do think there are certain times we should infringe on your freedom." But that's Mayor Michael Bloomberg for you, once again throwing himself into the thick of controversy by saying the government should sometimes be allowed to block citizens' rights to make personal choices. The mayor called the judge who shot down his soda ban legislation "clearly wrong," vowing to continue his fight to limit sugary drinks to smaller serving sizes

One of many sources

I thought we passed that point years ago.

So you believe that mothers milk is inferior to store bought formula?

Seriously? That's what you got from that post?

It's controlling whether women breast feed or not. Not a question of which is better.

Mayor Bloomberg was a Republican in name only. The only reason he registered Republican is because it was the easiest path to victory. Bloomberg was alway a very liberal Republican in name only Republican.

LPslittleclip -> RE: Bloomberg tells women what to do... (3/25/2013 5:26:42 PM)

as a nurse and a parent i can understand the origin of wanting to breast feed at least for the first milk known as colostrum that has immunity factors that will give a great health boost. in many hospitals the formula is part of a big give away by the companys and pushed by the hospitals so they get more funding.so some of the hospitals have opted for vouchers that parents can use later.
a historical note it is believed that the big polio outbreak was in part caused by the introduction of formula as the outbreaks closely followed the formula distribution in the nation.
for those who cant breastfeed there is a colostrum bank that provides for newborns

in the end it is the mother that has the decision but can only make it when there is full information to base the decision on.

So you also think think mother's milk is inferior to formula.
It would also appear that you also wish to conflate the facts with "fear mongering" in an effort bolster your position.
Do you know what else that those "commie hospitals" force you to do?

You have me on hide because you lack the ability to discuss.

It's like watching a train derail violently off the tracks of logic to smash spectacularly into a fireball of fallacy.

It's magical.

On topic, while doing (reluctant) clinicals at an inner city L&D, the pressure for women to breast feed their newborns was incredible. From regular visits from "lactation specialists) to posters, 'tracts' and even breast feeding classes... It was a little odd, and I suspect uncomfortable for women who wanted to use formula.

It would appear that from your "logical" perspective you also feel that made in the factory formula is superior to mother's milk.

Or, it's that these people think it's the right of the mother to decide whether to breastfeed or formula feed. And, superiority isn't the only thing checked when making this decision.

I hear that the hospital also wont let the mother shoot heroin while in the delivery room either. You seem to be making the case for ignorance.
Do you rallly feel that life threatning questions should be decided by those ignorant of the facts?

Not to mention that not all mothers are even capable of lactating.

Back on point, Bloomberg is really bothering me. He's giving the conservatives plenty of ammo when they complain about an intrusive nanny state.

It is that the right to choose includes choices you don't agree with.

Yep he is everything we thought he would be.
