Which has only led to the life of today, where your long long longterm dole is nearly as great as ours, via outsourcing and you retire to Spain to make it.  Cuz, you blokes ain't sporting big bling in pounds these days either, working like sammies.

tha uk was ina massive crisis in tha 70s. her medicine was tough but she fixed a country being destroyed by unions. that was to tha benefit of most & her success was so great labor became unelectable. not for nuthing she was elected thrice.

I think the commitment to unilateral nuclear disarmament in the Labour manifesto might have had something to do with that. Plus the conveniently timed intervention in the Falklands.

so maggie got argentina to invade tha falklands?

tha cnd policy was stupid but doubt its tha only reason for labors defeat. labor only won after becoming sorta tories too.

its a shame all the harm her and her cronies did, cant be undone.

well...I do hope that this does not count for the fact that the UK pays less into the EU than other states...or, that's what had been said in the news over here...that this goes onto her account...

They also said on the news that she was not happy about the reunification of Germany...fearing that Germany would become too powerful

Maybe I'm funny, but I'll take working three days a week over being unemployable.
Also, while it's been very fashionable to try to exonerate the Whore of Babylon by blaming all of that on the unions, it isn't like Heath was exactly blameless in that regard, is it?

Working three days a week wasnt enough to pay the bills. It wasnt just work, it was constant black outs with power by rota. As for taking on the unions, Labour`s Wilson planned to do exactly that but chickened out.

I`m not exonerating anyone, just pointing out the realities of life in the 70s.

ya know things are bad when even tha tv shows of tha time looked poverty stricken.

I wouldn't be so harsh after someone died. I do believe it was a sad parting. It sounds like she recently moved to a hotel, so she could have some people around her, and her children where no where near, and she died alone. M

What was the tenor around here with Sen. Kennedy passed in 2010? Were all the conservative folks dancing gleefully (I wasn't here, so I really don't know)?

Many of them were, including one neocon who's trying to take the moral high ground about insulting a corpse above.

Nope, as usual you got me all ass backward... I'm not a neocon, and I wasn't dancing on Kennedy's grave anymore than Thatcher's, I was showing complete ambivalence in both cases.

I think it's inevitable that this thread looks this way, M. Say that those of us who have a strong, lasting and visceral hatred of Thatcher (which is many of us) had kept quiet, here, out of that kind of respect. Can you imagine what the thread would start to look like? Mournfulness would have segued into misty-eyed hagiography. Then there'd have been an explosion of revulsion against it. She caused a bitter schism here in the UK when she was alive; she was always bound to do the same when she died.

I'm actually still learning about this, because when she began, I was a kid in a non English speaking country, and thereafter read a bit, but don't have a full grasp.
When people say she was a bad byotch, it was apparently an understatement.
I am beginning to understand how people have come to harbor such strong feelings about her. Thanks PeonForHer.

I honestly don't know a lot about her policies, or whether she was good or not (I mean, I don't even remember the 80s!), and I really don't care what anybody's viewpoints on that are right now.

I understand that many people didn't like her. I understand that her policies were very polarizing. I understand that her death is a natural time to discuss her legacy, good or bad. But there's a difference between criticizing those policies and saying things like:

quote:

"Ding dong the whitch is dead "

Rest in pieces bitch !

quote:

I hope the bitch died in agony and was screaming up until the end!

quote:

I think someone accidentally spilled some water over her.

Her last words were, reportedly, "I am melting... I am melting"

It's so lovely to see the left showing off their superior compassion and loving character.

I'm not saying it was sinister, just conveniently timed. The rest of the manifesto certainly didn't help, but Michael Foot had been involved with the CND since the 50's. The Labour Party certainly thought it was pretty crucial at the time as well, and there was a historical precedent from the 1960's of Labour adopting unilateral disarmament only to get spanked in a by-election, so they dropped it from the manifesto before the election. I will try and dig out my essay or my notes from the archives and be more specific tomorrow if you want.

I wouldn't for a second deny she changed the nature of the debate, I would argue that wasn't a good thing for the country.

Ah. Well, that's something you are much more accustomed to, than I.

I'm sure this thread will be handy in the archives, when the next old lefty goes off to answer for their deeds.
