ORIGINAL: WantsOfTheFlesh reagan rightly said all folks should be free to worship or not so it kinda leads to tha question are any leading republicans saying islamic worship should be banned in america? There have been times when some in the Republican Party have opposed things simply based on the thing being Islamic. For instance, the furor over a mosque being erected near the WTC. My problem with the Mosque was not that they didn't have the right to build it where they wanted (they absolutely did), but that it was in poor taste and disrespectful to build it where they wanted, particularly if their stated goal was to build bridges. I also took issue if they received any government funds while the Orthodox church that was demolished by the towers falling (after standing for about 100 years) was being blocked from being rebuilt. Regarding those who wanted to prevent the building of the mosque. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" Nuff said Does the right to free speech give you the right to say whatever you want wherever you want to say it? I got in a lot of arguments over the proposed mosque site. My only contention to it was it's placement. I didn't give a flying fuck if they built another mosque (iirc, it was reported that there are an awful lot of mosques near there already). Preventing this mosque wouldn't have prevented anyone from the free exercise of their chosen religion. I just didn't like the location of it, considering the timing of it. Someone mentioned the Japanese building something across from Pearl Harbor. Had it happened during WWII, I'm sure it wouldn't have gone over very well, but now? Totally different time.
