I don't own a gun, and have no desire to ever own a gun,  I am surprised at how many people here actually claim they are gun owners.  Personally, I would be happy for guns to only be in the hands of hired professionals (police, military, store owners, for business purposes, money transporters, a few others), but I know that won't happen.... can't take toys away from grown-ups.

So, my vote is that law abiding citizens should own guns if they desire.... but define law abiding.  Gun locks, training, registration, background checks, and a 24 hour wait period sound reasonable to me.

My child will never sleep in a home where a gun is present.   People can preach that they are safe with their guns, and their children know how to handle them (or not touch them).  But, the fact is, kids and criminals DO get their hands on legal guns.  Many "legal" gun owners end up in prison, when they end up committing illegal acts with their legal weapons.  A legal gun is often used in crime, or accidentally shoots someone innocent.

People are often hypocrites.  Lots of things can make us a hell of a lot safer.  Does anyone spend their money on a top-of-the-line alarm system in lieu of a gun and ammunition?  Do all you 'self-protection' people wear your seat belts or motorcycle helmets all the time?  How about smoking?  You have more of a chance of Cancer killing you than an intruder with a gun.  Many just own a gun to feel powerful, rebellious, or because it's a cool toy.  If self protection were really the issue, people would be doing a lot more to be healthy, safe, and secure.  'Just in case' is why you have the gun... then lock it.... just in case.

Sure, it's your right, have it...  but keep it out of the hands of people who will then illegally or accidentally shoot innocent people.  Lock it so it's not a weapon if an intruder (or friend or child) steals it, or your kid wants to impress his friends. Register it, so if it does get into criminal hands, perhaps law enforcement can find the criminal before he kills more people with your legal gun.

People kill people, guns kill people, and people with guns kill people.

I somehow managed to miss this thread, though I have said the same thing in threads past.  Better late than never, I guess.  Thanks for the hug... I am sure to need it when others here begin firing their legal weapons at me.

I hate to derail this further, (I do strive to derail with humor however this s not one of those times) it was a train wreck pages ago, how do you feel about mass murderers and serial killers? What if one escaped? Death row is a very good containment facility for them that ultimately leads to their permanent removal from society.

Then we keep the containment facility minus the permanent removal.  And if one of them escaped it wouldn't be the first time, death penalty or no.

Mass murderers and serial killers are horrible, but do we really want to sink to their level?

Secondly rotflmfao @ the only reason u r so well defended is ur armed citizens. Do u really think that anyone planning to invade you would think oh no we cant cos joe bloggs owns a gun lololol.

Yes rights to own a gun are yours but in UK its not like that and i thank god for it.
It isn't Joe Bloggs, it is the millions of Joe Bloggs. One gun against an invading army isn't much.  Several MILLION guns is a completely different story.   The effectiveness of a guerilla type resistance has been proven throughout history over and over and over again.  It is extremely formidable.  Ask the people who have fought in those types of situations.  They'll tell you that its damned near impossible to beat an armed populace who has the "home advantage" so to speak. Add that to the fact that the common citizen is, at that point, defending their home, their families, etc., then you've got something pretty imposing. Well wishes,

Oh yes, you mean like guerrilla armies in Afghanistan, Iraq, Nicaragua in the 80's, Peru, etcaetera, etc, etc? Hmmmm yes, I see.

Unfortunately police men, store owners, etc., are human beings and their uniforms, badges, and storefronts do not make them "non criminals." I know this through personal experience. Well wishes, Cav's ally

I suspect that you know what, ally meant and recognize the truth of her statement, but you have to point out the more bizarre, and criminally driven uprisings of warlords that're attempting to maintain their power base by deciminating those that are unable too defend themselves.
After ten years of service in the U.S. Armed Forces, I find Myself filled with trepidation everytime that another guncontrol nut takes to the streets and airwaves trying to convience the Democrats to ban more of the weapons that are available here in the States. I would thank the gods for Republicians, but they have a smattering of nuts and flakes amongst their numbers, too.
I have to wonder if where you live has overly influenced your outlook.

Exactly.  The Afghanis fought the Russians to a stalemate.  The Veit Cong was one of the most formidable forces in history.  The American Revolutionary war was as much guerilla warfare as it was military.   Armed citizens are one hell of an obstacle.  It was said, during the 1950's (regarding a possible Russian invasion because we were strongly outnumbered in tanks), that if the U.S. was invaded, the deciding weapon in the end would be the .22 Rifle in the hands of the American people. To say that an armed populace is laughable is... well laughable.  History proves otherwise. Thanks for making my argument. Well wishes, Cav's ally  "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."  - Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759

If we could eliminate every gun from the world,  I would be all for that... but that could not and will not ever happen.  The fewer guns that are out there, the fewer that will accidentally or intentionally shoot someone innocent.

I pray that you're capable of holding your breath for extended periods of time because, I don't see the paper appearing anytime during this lifestime, and I'm not seeing anything in My future reappearance among the mortals that could qualify as a need to please a girls bossy-side. lol

I agree that it could never happen.  Unfortunately humans are not peaceful creatures.  If the guns were gone, the violence would not stop.  It is for that reason that I believe in my right to defend myself and my family.  I have been at the "wrong" end of a firearm twice.  Once in the hands of a career criminal and once in the hand of a bad cop.  My own personal history has shown me that while I obviously cannot trust a criminal, I cannot even trust the individual who wields a badge and has pledged to protect and defend me. I believe that everyone should be able to decide if they wish to own a gun or not.  I simply don't believe that a nation's government should be allowed to render their populace defenseless. If we look back in history, we can see how those types of situations turned out. I do wish, though, that it was something we didn't have to worry about.  Unfortunately we live in a society where we do. Well wishes, Cav's ally

Hmmmm? You barge in on a discussion that started seemingly eons ago and accuse me of throwing sand in your eyes? Not at all, no no no. Being playful is a pastime, a little like whining on discussion boards that other posters aren't serious enough.

Each to their own, if I annoy you, bar me. Best wishes.

Our government has rendered its own occupants defenseless and vulnerable to attacks, and now thanks to that same government, even more people think we need to be destroyed.  It has shipped our youth to another country in a ridiculous war, where far too many are arriving home in body bags... and these soldiers have guns.  I don't trust our government with weapons, other governments with weapons, and I certainly don't trust the average idiot with a firearm.  In extreme times, our neighbors are as likely to kill us as any invader.  Guns will be just something people would want to kill another to get.

The real threat is nuclear and chemical.... and a gun ain't gonna help.
