Do I own a gun? Not yet. Do I know how to shoot and care for a gun? Yes. I think everyone should regardless of whether or not they plan on owning one. I believe in gun safety. I also believe that criminals are exactly that: criminals. Hence it matters very little to them if the guns they use are legal or not. You know who it does matter to? Law abiding citizens. You know why? Because if the criminals are the only ones with the guns, then guess who has the power-that's right, the criminals. I know I'd rather they didn't. Oh, and a few things just for the record.... 1) Guns don't kill people- bullets do (without them a gun is just a blunt object) if you want a gun for protection but refuse to kill/cause harm, you can always load it with blanks or leave it unloaded and hope that you can scare people away enough so you’ll never have to use it. 2) Just because you're in a position where you have to shoot someone, doesn't mean you have to shoot to kill. 3) Carrying a gun with the purpose of defending yourself doesn't even mean that should the situation arise you will have to shoot (and yes I know that you should be prepared to do so if you decide to carry), sometimes people have the sense to just walk away when they see you won't be easy pickings. and finally 4) If it comes down to a choice between you walking away or them walking away I'm pretty sure most of us would choose ourselves. After all, we're not the ones breaking the law/ trying to cause harm. We all have the unalienable right to defend ourselves- with guns or otherwise. If you live in a place where situations where a gun would be necessary don't exist, good for you. I wish the rest of the world was the same, but it's not. Until it is, I'll support the right to bear arms...and the right not to.
