I don't own a gun and have always disliked/feared them, no tangible reason that I can think of for this original dislike  I remember using a gun at a friends farm to shoot at tin cans and I would line up the target and then CLOSE my eyes and pull the trigger so I figure the world is a much safer place if I don't have one. I am not anti- guns, more just anti me having one.

Own them and use them. Ever live in the woods? Rabid racoons etc, not to mention the occasional uninvited hunter, this dear shoots back.

lol...well here it does. Didn't you know that midwesterners don't know how to talk? Sabots are commonly pronounced sabbits here...and if you went to the local gun shop and asked for a sab-o they would most likely not even know what you were referring to.

They also call the thing on top of your house a ruff.

That's a perfectly valid approach.  Having a firearm is a right, not a duty, in this country.  It is, and should be up to you, on whether you have any kind of weapon.

I used to teach a firearm's self defense course on a range in Mississippi.  Most of my students were women.  This was because I suspect none of the local men wanted to admit they had anything to learn.  [shrug] Such is life.

Anyway, I'd start the first class with this statement.  "This is a firearm.  In the context of this class, it has one simple purpose and that is to blow a large bloody hole in someone.  It is not a remote control; you can't get someone to obey you with one of these.  It's not a magic shield; if you hold one people can still hurt you.  It just blows large bloody holes in people.  Now if you are not comfortable blowing a large bloody hole in a person, this class is not for you.  We'll glad refund your fee."

We usually lost 10 to 30 percent of each class, but the range operator agreed with me and ate it (Well we both ate it since I was paid a percentage)

A poet?..... maybe.

There once was a dom from Nantucket......

There once was a crackhead gone rabid
Who could no longer afford his habit

He thought he was slick
Breaking doors down for kicks
And taking it if he could grab it

He made a mistake
When he came to my gate
Thinking what's mine he could have it

He didn't expect
What happened next
That left him to hop like a rabbit

I aimed carefully
And took out his knee
With a 12 guage buffalo sabot

Heh heh erin.... you're now the poet laureate of CM, in the Quinten Tarantino vein .

While no one would forbid you poetic license, I am afraid the spelling nazis  will revoke your spelling license:

51% of you who voted own a gun. I find that really scarey - im with the no law abiding citizen should own a gun. Way too often they get in the wrong hands.
Forgive me now but i'm betting 99% of you who own a gun are American. No diss intended but it just isnt really a British thing.

May you never have to face a situation where you need one.

Frankly I find those situations much more scary then knowing my neighbors around me are armed

With respect i have been in situations where if i had had a gun and had used it things may not have happened to me. However i would never even had one been in my hand have chosen to use it. It would in my opinion make me not better than the person attempting to commit the crime / felony against me.

How would it "not make you better"? The criminal is trying to kill you because he wants your money; you use a gun to prevent this. In the morally superior sweepstakes, you come out way ahead, in my opinion.

So being a murderer instead of a thief  makes you better does it?
I would much rather hand over my money than kill a person.
An eye for an eye is bad philosophy.

missturb, do not disturb the gun-owning, law-obiding (indredible!) citizens. NAUGHTY GIRL!

PS: of course you are right and I agree with you, but that's because we come from the same place

Oh another thing (sorry). It's a great deal for the criminals themselves when there are guns around to steal. So that they can use them. On the rest of us. Brilliant

I own several weapons (a gun to me is like a cannon or machine gun) from semiautomatic rifles with 50 round magazines to single shot black powder cap and ball.   Do I carry them?   Oh yes, to the store, to the desert (especially there for rattlers and wild pigs), to the resturant.   I don't carry them all the time.   Have I used my guns to shoot things.   Well I spent 20 years in the Army so enough explanation there.   I don't shoot animals unless being attacked.

So what do you shoot at? Tins? Bottles?

How about relinquishing your guns picking up another aim and throw sport, like bowling :-)

Just a suggestion
