Winkler, who is white, deleted the tweet and told followers in his feed that he didn't understand the phrase to be a racist term.

Really? But he has a history degree from Harvard? I wonder if it can be rescinded.

He knew what it meant. He's just a politician.
    quote:

Chris Fields, secretary of the Minnesota Republican Party, said Winkler's comments were "beyond the pale" and his apology wasn't enough. "If he had any personal integrity, he'd resign," said Fields, who is black.

IMO, this is a completely stupid comment, and just another politician using any possible dirt against a politician from the opposite side of the aisle. It's up to Winkler's constituents to determine if he's representing them or not.

Come on tazzy, you must know I was being facetious.

We have no idea what people often say in "private settings", or what they even think.
To think that we don't or can't have some Democrats that say or think racist thoughts would be naiive.

I will defend this guy in one way:

I find it hard to believe that there's a person on earth that hasn't said something similar to this ... they know it's a racial statement. At that particular moment, they don't care.

Here's where I'm going to open up a whole new can of worms: I don't think one moment in a person's entire life makes them a racist.

I don't believe this guy's a racist (although he might be; I just don't feel like researching his history) based upon one incident.

I do believe that he was engaging in race baiting, which has become part of the stock-in-trade for the Dems, on the whole.

Peace and comfort,
Michael

Now I found this post VERY interesting.
You said one moment in a person's life does not define them.
I tend to agree with this.
How many moments does it take before what you say, does define you?

What happens when you have 10-12 racist thoughts, are you then officially a racist?

Can you have 5 racist thoughts in one year, and 5 in another year and still not be a racist?

Are you only a racist when you say what you think, and not when you don't say it aloud?

The only reason we are now looking at this Senator is he dared to tweet what he was thinking.

We really never know what a person is thinking, and because we don't know what they are thinking, do we automatically assume someone is NOT a racist?

This man happened to slip and get caught, there are many that don't slip and are still very racist.

Who get's to determine who is a racist and who is not a racist?
lol, no end is sight here.

No, we dont. I had just hoped, by this point, we had politicians who were actually smarter than they are showing themselves to be... on both sides of the isle

I find it astounding that so many have not read Adam Smith, but run their mouth about what it says in full twist. I will now add to that Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Thats all on this.

I am going to google Adam Smith, believe it or not Ron, there are billions and billions of books that can be read, do you expect us to read and remember everything that has ever been written?

*I certainly have read Uncle Tom's cabin, and I know what an Uncle Tom, IS.

Also, don't we come here to run our mouths in full twists?

mnottertail -> RE: Racism & Sour Grapes in One Fell Swoop (6/26/2013 8:37:59 AM)

Uncle Tom was beaten to death for refusing to reveal the whereabouts of two runaway slaves.

Not at all what the invective portrays.

Adam Smith was the head of the customs house in london, wrote a book called The Wealth of Nations, and fools always misceiving while vaguely holding as the codex a quote which contains 'invisible hand'.

How does his being a Dem add to the irony ?

Because over the years the Dems have tended to be the champions for minorities in political matters. To see one throw himself under a bus in this way is pretty amazing. The level of disconnect is almost historically noteworthy.

Historically noteworthy only if you buy into the the dems tending to be champions for minorities.
If you view the dems as the party that cynically maintains its electorate in a cycle of poverty to maintain its political power its not ironic at all.

Agreed. Perhaps the intent of my comment would have been more clear if I'd said that the Dems tend to consider themselves the champions of minorites. My mistake.

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Racism & Sour Grapes in One Fell Swoop (6/26/2013 5:12:15 PM)

....and, yet, "Uncle Tom", in the way that the words are understood, i.e., "a black person considered to be excessively obedient or servile", it seems to apply quite aptly to Clarence Thomas (whose oral argument and voting record on SCOTUS reflect someone who simply follows what the conservative male justices do without having a lot of original thought). The phrase "Uncle Tom" has become an epithet for a person who is slavish and excessively subservient to perceived authority figures, particularly a black person who behaves in a subservient manner to white people; or any person perceived to be a participant in the oppression of their own group. The negative epithet is the result of later works derived from the original novel. (from Wiki) In the original novel Uncle Tom is portrayed as a "good black". But since then, the term has taken on a more pejorative meaning.

I agree that "Uncle Tom" has a pejorative meaning. But Clarence Thomas fits the description to a "t". I know of no other justice who routinely votes against the interests of people with whom he shares the same racial background.

My African American friends don't like Clarence Thomas. They view him as a "sell-out", in other words, as an "Uncle Tom".

I don't find it racist when used in this particular way. Somehow, it actually seems incredibly accurate and insightful. [sm=2cents.gif]

I have never cared for Clarence Thomas, nor do I "like" him.
I don't care if the term "Uncle Tom" fits him to a T, to the point that when you google the definition, you see a picture of him in wikipedia.

When we are willing to accept and allow people to hurl racist insults, and we deem it "okay", because it fits how "someone acts", we lower ourselves.

The next time someone hurls an insulting stereotype based on age, race, creed, color, sex, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, marital status, and/or socioeconomic status, I want everyone that thinks it's no big deal or "okay", to wink and nod.

It's either acceptable or unacceptable, I don't care how much the shoe fits.

Pot kettle black to those who think he deserves it.

Just because someone behaves in a certain way, does not mean they "deserve" to publically be called something derogatory, nor are you the judge who gets to decide when racial insults are acceptable or unacceptable.

Remember that senator a few years back who called a guy who was following him everywhere he went, a "macah cah" or something like that?
No-one ever heard of the "word" before or even knew if it (was) a word but they started calling him a "racist!" lol
"You're a GOOBA GOOBA!"
"Racist!"

We all say things we regret, I could actually respect the man if he just apologized.
Now, he can be known as someone who hurls racial slurs and a liar.

So you two were under the impression that there were no Democratic racists ?
If that is so than I can see the irony......otherwise it's just more false outrage....and that doesn't surprise me in the least.

I remember a senator, back in the 90s that used the word "niggardly" in a floor speech about the budget (I think) and was immediately decried as a racist (by people that were so ignorant, they couldn't be bothered to look up the word).

Of course, the senator in question was a republican and the dems didn't rest until he resigned; over a word that was used correctly and has no racial overtones, what-so-ever.

It's a beautiful life, down there in D.C.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I was thinking if he was a Republican, we would never hear the end of it.
Sad and pathetic

cloudboy -> RE: Racism & Sour Grapes in One Fell Swoop (6/26/2013 8:33:17 PM)

The greatest irony about Clarence Thomas was how he was cynically appointed to the Supreme Court b/c he's black (Republican Affirmative Action) only to oppose such policies for everyone else.

I don't think a White Guy can accuse Thomas of being an Uncle Tom, but a black guy could.

I've never been a fan of ideological judges, and Thomas is ideological to his core.
