You're stressing out way too much over it. What guy number 1 finds brain-meltingly good might not do anything for guy number 2. As far as he knows, you're awesome at blow jobs, you just haven't learnt his preferences yet.

I would be learning to taste before I begin once you have the taste worked out then you're ready and are less likely to gag

Getting the breathing right is important as is the angle, especially if you want to deep throat him. Lying with your head off the edge of the bed provides a natural angle.
If you have a quite strong gag reflex, take it slow and at a pace you're comfortable with. I'm an escort and although I can control my gag reflex, many of my clients go at their pace and hold my head. Not conducive to relaxing but many guys like to replicate what they see in the porn movies.

I typically do NOT like to be sexually graphic...but there is no other way to answer this...so forgive my vulgarity

My first Dom was HUGE and extremely into blow jobs...so his first thing was teaching me how to suck him and get it so I could put my forehead against his groin while doing so...the only thing that helps the gag reflex is desensitization through practice and that means..pushing at the back of your throat with a toothbrush, straw... Every day (just like exercise..want results...practice). Once you get past the gagging thing, you have to be able to maneuver your tongue (I said huge..I meant huge) but still keep your teeth covered. I practiced on water bottles. Once it is "show time"...position is everything...you must be able to open the entire throat so no scrunching down..laying on the bed with your head hanging off is one good way, another is kneeling in front of him if he is tall enough that you must work with your head back a little (think CPR...first thing they do is tilt the head back to open the airway). From there it is all what he likes...some like scraping teeth, some like suction, some like licking..

I can deep-throat without gagging (I control my gag reflex to the point that I can repress it completely, or engage it without stimulation), but I rarely do.

I am told I give amazing head, and most of the time I do I don't take a guy's cock anywhere close to deep enough in my mouth that it potentially could make me gag.
