Actually, I believe someone I know had, with his prior sub, an initial 12 month contract that they then evaluated at the end of the year and then signed a new one for an additional length of time...

Granted...I wasn't totally listening so I may have missed something but, I believe that initially they were D/s... I stick by my original belief, though, sometimes spelling out each party's expectations and responsibilities upfront can help to prevent future misunderstandings.

Oh without a doubt, it can prevent misunderstandings. I just find contracts... silly (for lack of a better word)... because they arent enforceable. Anyone can still walk at any time.

Anyone can still walk at anytime anyway. Unless they're being held against their will. Which is a no no even in consensual slavery. Which btw, in contract form it's referred to as voluntary servitude. Which is legal. But people can argue legalities til the cows come home. It makes no real difference. The point of a contract is to lay out what is and isn't expected of the submissive and dominant. In a hard written format. Because to read, agree and sign has a different meaning mentally than to just talk about it and commit. Which, with time, can become very ambiguous.
