MARYSVILLE, Wash. -- Prosecutors have dropped the case against a Marysville police officer who was charged with manslaughter in connection with his daughter's shooting death.

The case against Officer Derek Carlile went to trial earlier this month, but ended with a hung jury.

In court documents filed Tuesday, Snohomish County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Lisa Paul asked that the charge against Carlile be dismissed because prosecutors do not "believe that another jury will be able to reach a unanimous verdict."

Carlile had been charged with second-degree manslaughter after his daughter, 7-year-old Jenna Carlile, was killed in the family's van on March 10.

Investigators said Carlile was off duty and headed to a wedding with his wife and children when they stopped at an art studio in Stanwood. Carlile and his wife left the children in the family van while they dropped off business cards. Carlile's loaded personal handgun was also in the van.

Come on, I am an insane gun owner with a small arsenal. I stockpiled MRE's, ammo, I am prepared for the civil unrest that this verdict should cause.

I see no glow of massive fires in town, the national emergency broadcast has not messed up my PPV GGW tonite.

What the hell am I going to do with 50 thousand rounds of ammo? If there are no riots, my investment will be worthless.

I had a choice, ammo or vintage high dollar scotch. I chose the ammo.

So you anarchy driven non white (rioters do not have to be just African American) lunatics who want to fight "the man" and those that think that Obama is actually a white republican dude pretending to be an African American born in Kenya trying to turn this country to communism need to take to the streets, kill, rape, plunder, vandalize and while you are at it, destroy all the Coors beer.

ALL could have been avoided had the gun owners been responsible with their guns...

Every fucking one if you want to hide behind the "murder" clause. Fuck you. These kids were neglected and abused by gun owners who didnt give enough of a fuck about them to secure their guns so that children could not get to them. if that makes you warm and fuzzy enough that you can negate all the children who are dying simply because no one "meant" to kill them, then you really are part of the problem and have no ability to see beyond your own gun to the truth....

They all could have been avoided.

And thats my point on guns. I dont think we need more gun control.. I think we need to force gun owners to be more fucking responsible with their guns. Own what the fuck you want... and if that gun falls into the wrong hands, that gun owner should be held responsible.

Period.

half a million guns are stolen each year. How many are sold to criminals privately who cant get them any other way beyond the stupidity of gun owners who dont give a fuck? It is done now. You people screamed when O. J walked, so we scream when Zimmerman walked.

Besides the prosecution botched this case from the get go. Inept is not the word I would use to describe their efforts, amateurish is close.

It's a valid opinion. With your clarification, you are now talking about the 'initial aggressor' stuff that descended from the old code duello.

I agree, there should be something in place to keep a person from running up to someone, slapping them and running around the corner, and then shooting the person who was just slapped when they give chase.


Here again we hit the problem that no one on this planet can reasonably know if Zimmerman goaded the attack and then shot, except Zimmerman... and he's not talking.

Unless we dismantle our justice system to remove bedrock protections like 'innocent until proven guilty', or adopt the Chinese model or the Inquisition, I don't see how your goal can be achieved.

And please understand that SYG wasn't simply created out of the blue in 2004... a bunch of legislators didn't sit down and decide to come up with a free-for-all.

SYG (and shall issue permit laws) are a direct *reaction* to the old racist Jim Crow and anti-Chinese laws that were designed to keep the poor and minorities from defending themselves against lynch mobs.

In the good old boy bad old days, those who weren't in power were required to retreat to the wall in the face of deadly force. A young man like Martin could have been legally shot in the back while leaving the store with his beverage and candy, as long as someone thought maybe he hadn't paid for them. An Hispanic like Zimmerman would never have gotten a CCW permit.

That's the USA I grew up in.

What you see as leading to tragedies, I see as leading away from lynchings, and adding to tragedies via the previously mentioned consequences. Nothing happens in a vacuum.


I'm all ears for a workable fix.
